I came here with my sister last week. The location itself was very far out. Our Google maps lost connection and we were wandering for quite some time. The businesses were also quite far apart, so it was hard to stop to ask for guidance. Post Ranch Inn is across the street from the Ventana Inn and on a hill, so you have to drive uphill. Even the parking is uphill, so if youre wearing heels (like us), you have to be careful, because there is no sidewalk. The restaurant was very beautiful, though, a lot smaller than it seemed in the pictures. Our server was excellent! He was very kind and informative. Honestly, I didnt like the food very much. Maybe it is because the food was upscale, artisan, or gourmet? I had the quail, which didnt have very much meat on it and smelled really wild. The oyster soup was green and thick, and tasted okay, but because it was so smooth, it was like drinking a smoothie. The steak was yummy, though, I felt like it could have used a little more flavoring or some A-1 sauce, which I did not ask for, because given the rich atmosphere, I thought would be improper. The raspberry sorbet dessert was excellent! Because the environment was so beautiful and the service was so great, I would definitely go again. I will have to take my husband next time. This is more like a romantic dinner date for couples. My sister and I were the only non-couple there. Its a good place to just sit, talk, and stare out into the ocean, while you wait for your meal.

Always 5 Star
We visit Big Sur at least once a year. We always make it a special treat to reserve a window seat (well in advance) to have a lunch at this amazing location. This is a restaurant that must be experienced. The overall experience is five-star! I would suggest coming during lunch or at sunset to maximize the views. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time as the restaurant is quite busy, especially on weekends. The best tables are right up against the glass windows. These prime tables are usually saved for the patrons of the hotel. However, if you time it right there is availability during the early lunch or late lunch times. The experience and the ambiance will have you planning your return visit.

A place to save for very special occasions. The vista is spectacular, very romantic. The food also does not disappoint. The format is a four course meal. My first two courses were sublime - shaved asparagus to start, then a sea urchin dish that was simply fabulous. I went for the steak as my third dish - this one turned out to be a little dry and somewhat less memorable. But the plate of artisan cheeses to finish the meal was very nice. Great cocktails served here too. On the night we visited, the resort was offering stargazing next to the restaurant through a spectacular telescope. The night was clear and the views were simply gorgeous, adding to the magic of the experience.

Just visited Sierra Mar yesterday, and my girlfriend and myself LOVED it! We had cocktails on the patio, overlooking the most incredible vista - as in sweeping 180+ degree panorama - of the Pacific Ocean. You cannot even imagine how grand it is, until you see for yourself! The cocktails were some of the tastiest I have ever enjoyed - great examples of innovative high-end mixology. My hottie sweetheart sipped "The Hottie", and I had a wonderful concoction of vodka, grapefruit with floater of absinthe. I will post a few pics too. The staff and guests we met were all wonderful. This is my fourth or fifth visit, and every time has been pure magic!

Had lunch there before hiking in Big Sur, and it was excellent. The restaurant is at the edge of a steep drop-off and has glass windows from floor to ceiling. The views are simply stunning. Many of the seats by the glass get a lot of sun, and we were warm and toasty. We got the pre-fixe lunch. For the main course, I got what the waitress recommended (chicken risotto with wild mushroom) and it was delicious. The appetizers and dessert were pretty good too. In case youre not up for an activity right after lunch, theres a nice wooden bench outside the restaurant facing the sea and you can laze around and bask in the warmth of the sun some more.

Spent a week in the San Francisco Bay area including 2 nights at the Post Ranch Inn. I must say the resort is a 5 star experience. They staff took excellent care of us. The accommodations were excellent. The views magnificent. However, the food at the bar (THIS IS THE BAR MENU....NOT SEATED RESTAURANT MENU) at Sierra Mar left me wanting.....The tab was the highest my entire week in the Bay area, and it was the only time that I left hungry...and the beef, although cooked to order was tough and without flavor.

If you died and went to heaven, this would be your first meal. You sit 1200 above the ocean looking down on the clouds and a seemingly infinite horizon, gazing out over the cliffs of Big Sur, in complete awe of this surreal experience. As we went from course to course in the prefix menu, the sun lowered in the sky as a hot summer day became a chilly evening. The food, wine selections by the sommelier, & service were all part of a perfect night.

Now that was amazing. Wagyu burger had a nice patty which held together lightly salted, paired well with more salty bacon. Trout fillet perfectly cooked but the dressing was where the real genius lay - truffled pumpkin puree with pine nuts and raisins - perfect blend. Im not a dessert person but the cow cheese on thin slice of toasted brioche with milk jam and membrillo hit the right spots of sweet salty savoury and tart in the same dish.

One of the most romantic restaurants in the world. At the edge of the mountain with a beautiful view of the ocean. You have to make reservations at least several days in advance. Shoot for the one closest to sunset. You can arrive early and get drinks, or we were able to at least. Good food, but its the view, and the glass walls that surround the building that really impress.

Ive been there twice. Im an epicurian at soul. Ive eaten in Michelin star restaurants across the oceans in many countries. To me the Serria Mar is the best restaurant in the world. John Cox is a MASTER CHIEF. If you have the chance go there for the lunch. The view is just magestic. You will keep the best of memories of your experience.

Phenomenal! Our waiter and chef graciously let us order some vegetarian items off their locally-foraged mushroom special otherwise we wouldve been out of luck as veggie eaters, which is my only complaint. Otherwise, best meal Ive had in CA to date with a picturesque setting that is the epitome of Big Sur.

This is our second time within a year to have the opportunity to dine at Sierra Mar. If you are a foodie like me, it still be a meal to remember. Impeccable dishes, consistently outstanding service and the view of the Pacific Ocean delivered to your table. We duo be back!!
