If youre looking for a real Tacoma experience rather than the Starbucks next door, try the Renaissance Café. The owner is welcoming and personable. Once you stop looking at your delicious menu you have the art to soak in all around you. From the 1920s movie star women lining the walls to the new art that cycles in, there is always a conversation piece. Want a different view? Take the seating by the window; if youre there early enough you can watch the sun hit Pacific Avenues museums and trees to start your day in peace. A calming spot to ponder the local newspapers, over (my favorite) a waffle with strawberries when they are in season. They are a steady Tacoma business with a heart for giving the best service to their customers. You wont regret meeting your buddies for breakfast, or lunch for their amazing sandwiches. Oh, and be sure to drink lots of coffee or tea to have an excuse to use their restroom, its quite the magical experience ;).

At 4:20, a small group of us came in to grab some coffee and sit down after a family event. We asked if they served espresso drinks and they said yes, but they were only offering to go orders. We said that was fine because we werent ordering any food, but we wanted to sit inside while we had our coffee. They said that because they were closing soon (40 minutes) that they could not allow us to do that. We left and really wanted to try again, since wed rather support local instead of Starbucks (next door) when we can. So we went back and explained our situation again. They said because they had a busy day and because they were closing REALLY SOON (still 40 minutes) that we could not sit inside, even though they were open until 5 and there were other customers sitting down in the cafe. Its sad that they missed out on $40 worth of business, and that we were being rejected because they had a busy day.

My first impression was the location was outstanding. Starbucks and a cupcake place next door. It smelled wonderful when entering. The lady who greeted us said and I quote, "feel free to sit anywhere and help yourself to your drinks over there". So we just had to get our own coffee. Quite odd I thought but I digress. From there we were told that they did not make any pastry products, like cinnamon rolls I was craving, because they "didnt have time". The waitress said she could make them if we waited. We opted to do so. The food arrived and it was not spectacular by any means, but it was home mode and pretty good. The major complaint was my friends girlfriend got a turkey croissant and the bread was very hard. The waitress was really nice but it was really weird having to get your own drinks from the cooler like youre at a gas station.

A sullen teenager "greeted" me as I walked in. She made no eye contact and told me I could sit wherever I like. She clearly didnt want to be there and mumbled something about something being self serve. She walked away before I even had the time to ask her what she had said. The waitress wasnt much better. She initially gave me a smile, but wasnt friendly or attentive after that. She brought my breakfast sandwich over and never checked on me after to ask me how it is. My plate sat on the corner of table for 15 minutes after I was done until she came over to clear it. I already had my card out and asked for the check when she was ready. She said, "Yeah, you can just come over to the counter," again making no eye contact. The food was good, but I wont be going back because I wasnt made to feel welcomed.

The Renaissance Cafe is a fantastic place to get breakfast or lunch. Their sandwiches are some of the tastiest Ive had, and their scrambled eggs are both healthy and amazing (theyre made with a steamer, so no grease). When youre not reading the newspaper snippets, or admiring the art on the walls, the cafe offers a nice view of Union Station and the Tacoma Glass Museum for you look at while enjoying your meal. In addition to that, you can also play a boardgame or two with your friends. The only downside to the place is its rather high prices. A sandwich there can set you back just under ten dollars. This is most likely due to its location, in the rather posh Harmon Loft area. If ten dollars for a good sandwich doesnt bother you, then this is definitely a place to chow down at.

While the environment and the service is very pleasant and enjoyable, the food however, is not. I ordered the salmon "scrambled omelet" and realized that their use of the word "omelet" is very liberal. I was served a dry scrambled eggs with salmon mixed in. No vegetables, no seasoning, no cheese; salmon and eggs. Not only was the taste and appearance disappointing, so was the portion size, for my $10 I received a small mound of "scrambled omelet". Of course that comes with toast though... a soggy two pieces of toast. Thoroughly disappointed with my experience there.

Rude staff we were told to come back in an hour . You could see several tables were almost done. Walked down the street, came back 5min later and four tables were open. Walked in sat down. Girls attitude wasnt much better. Looked at the LIMITED breakfast menus Omelet, French tost, or Belgian waffle? Really. And you call your self a breakfast restaurant? Overpriced too. Walked out. Save yourself the trip. Go to Marcies on south Tacoma way.

One of my favorite places in downtown Tacoma to go for lunch. Well made food, decent service, and great ambiance. Nice artwork and event posters adorn the walls of this quirky eatery. The best chocolate chip cookie ever comes with all lunch menu items. Their breakfast menu is very delicious as well. The owner is very friendly and energetic. They have a very creative, inventive way of cooking their eggs. Beverages are self-serve.

This is a fun place. Its a very casual coffee shop/cafe with a nice selection of sandwiches, chips and soups. My favorite menu item is the "I cant decide" where they simply make a sandwich of their choice for you. The food quality is excellent and service is personal and friendly. Decor is quirky and fun. And the location is great if youre planning on hitting any of the local museums.

This is the cutest little place. Great breakfast, comfortable ambience, and very nice staff. I ordered the Denver scramble and add avocado with an espresso to drink. This is the best breakfast spot I have found in Tacoma area so far. Oh - and the eggs are cooked via espresso steam wand, so no grease or oil. Very delicious and very healthy!

this place is such a gem Im even scared to post a review, because the fame is gonna ruin it. simple, cheap, delicious, friendly. love that they have amazing salads that are actually items, not just a bunch of greens, cucumber and vinaigrette tossed on a plate like a disowned side. give me an hammock, and I could live here.

Recommended by family who live locally, this is my favourite breakfast place in Tacoma. Friendly staff, endless coffee and great breakfast selection. My wife and I loved the bagel breakfast sandwich and my son the French toast. We will be heading back every morning while we are staying at the nearby Courtyard.
