As a Fredericksburg local for about 10 years, I though I would give Virginia Barbeque a shot, in spite of some fairly mixed reviews, considering the last review was well over a year old. I have eaten at "the other" local place just up the hill numerous times and am generally satisfied with their BBQ offering. I have eaten my prefered BBQ, NC style pulled pork, throughout VA and some NC locations. For reference, my favorite is Willards (in Chantilly) followed by Pierces. Three items (well 4) a BBQ joint should make exceptionally well in my opinion are the BBQ (pork in this neck of the woods), cole slaw, potato salad, and baked beans. On this occasion I did not try their baked beans, largely based on prior poor reviews (they looked like they were straight out of a can). First the ambiance/service: I question the potential quality of a BBQ joint in a strip mall, though its ironic that my favorite is technically such an establishment. I also high question any BBQ joint that doesnt have the aroma of smoke hitting you in the face by the time you reach the front door. VA BBQ falls short in both categories. The decor appears very cheaply done, it was basically vacant at lunch time, and there was zero smell or hint of any meat being smoked on the premisis. I pretty much knew I wanted my standards going in so after a quick glance at the menu, strolled up the the counter to order. Unlike another reviewer, I didnt even get so much as a "here or to go", no "hi", "how are you", or "how can I help you today"... just a blank stare waiting for me to begin my order. I was handed my receipt and a "thanks". No indication if I needed to listen for my order number, or if they would serve to me or what. So I filled my drink cup at the self serve soda stand (they had what may have been fresh ice tea, but I doubt it, and no fresh lemonade). I filled sample containers of their NC style vinegar, their VA style and Hot (also tomato based) style sauces while waiting. Food was brought to me fairly promptly, but it should have been considering there were maybe 6 patrons in the restaurant at the time. They have one flatscreen TV in the dining area, on ESPN news at the time, which was fine by me, suprisingly with the sound on. It was however competing with the blaring country music radio station that was being played out of the kitchen/service counter area. The Food: The potatos were different. They are roasted (I think). Think, country style hash browns in a mayo based sauce. They were fairly bland in spite of the roasted cooking which did give them a different flavor and texture. Interesting for a change of pace, but not really my preference compared to Red Hot and Blue (my favorite potato salad). The (mayo based) slaw was just bland as all get out. It reminded me of the served in bulk style from a grocery store deli. The pulled pork (ordered NC style) was moist, but it had a slight almost mushy like background texture, like it has been sitting around a while or reheated. The flavor was OK, but I had a tough time getting past the texture. It may have not bothered me with a thick tomato based sauce, but the NC style vinegar sauce doesnt let this shortcoming hide. All in all, I dont plan on returning and do not reccomend it to others.

I am quite shocked several reviews said this place is good! First off, service was what youd expect at a McDonalds -no greeting and the first question is "here or to go?" The food took much longer than it should have, especially considering the poor quality! The decor is boring and cramped. I ordered theres pulled chicken which was recommended by the cashier. I would rather have the pulled chicken available at the grocery store frozen food section any day of the week. The beans tasted familiar, like out if a can. The green beans werent bad but the disappointment at this point made it irrelevant. I also ordered the bananna pudding. Virginia BBQ was consistent if nothing else- consistently bad! THat pudding was so average it may have also come out of a can. To top it off it was frozen in the middle! Ill spare you the details of how poor the rest of my families food was. It suffices to say nobody finished their food. One look at the cook while hes preparing others food and it becomes apparent why this place is the worst BBQ Ive ever had -the cook uses the microwave more times than Ive ever seen in a restaurant. I cant say he cooked everything in there, but based on quality it sure seemed that way! I will never consider eating at this place again. Ive never given a review before but felt I needed to with Virginia BBQ to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

People like different things in different places so i am loathe to criticize even if the last four weeks in FBurg have been close to restaurant hell. But this was too much to bear; Canned green beans; potato salad that should be called mayonaise salad with potatoes; same for the slaw; Tasteless oversalted meat both NC style and Virginia, awful sauces, all tastelesstasteless; Ive had better ribs in the frozen food section;Wheres the freakin beef? They should take this chain and attach an anchor to it and throw it overboard.

Stopped by today to try the food. The place has the nastiest carpet I have ever seen in a restaurant. It fills the entire venue with a terrible musty smell. I ordered ribs with corn bread, mac n cheese and fries as sides. The ribs were well seasoned, but they were dry and obviously not fresh. They had a microwave -cooked-like texture to them. The fries and the mac n cheese were good but I didnt get the corn bread I ordered and paid for.

Awful place! Im only giving it a one star because it is not possible to give the zero I believe they deserve. My family and I love BBQ and love trying new places. We stopped in for lunch about 12:30. There were no other customers. The pulled pork was full of fat. Pulled chicken was ice cold and the ribs were not fresh. I learned about the club they offer when they explained it to the people who came in after us.

This place was close to where I was working for the day so thought it was worth a try. Sadly worst mistake. Food was terrible. The ribs were DRY. The bones had more moisture. The pulled pork was moist with zero flavor as well. Should have realized that quality was not there since all the accolades on the wall were old and nit even from this location. Save your money and look somewhere else

Late lunch so place was dead. The man at the counter had a self righteous attitude. Food was quick service & pulled pork(Viginia) sandwich waswrapped to stay warm. Very moist meat and a handful of sauces to choose from. The onion rings were big&crunchy! Corn bread was also good & moist even though they were little muffins.

These people are so freaking rude and mean. No customers in the dining room. We walk in. No welcome. No help on ordering just "what do you want?"......um.....folks.....no wonder there werent any customers. We literally walked in, they said what do you want, then we walked out. HORRIBLE!!
