In my opinion, this is the best "American food" restaurant in town and for the price New Braunfels and San Marcos dont have any better and maybe none as good. I gave it two stars, but thats not really fair. Would it get two stars in San Diego or Santa Fe or Dallas or Chicago? No, but were not talking about comparing it to Chez Panisse or The French Laundry, folks - were talking about "home style" food in small-town Texas. In that competition, it probably rates at least three stars, maybe four. Its clean, nonsmoking and smells good. The food is fresh, well-prepared and not greasy. It arrives promptly, and the service is good. There are no "off" flavors in any of the fried items. Thats a list of things that are individually fairly rare in small-town Texas and almost unheard of in the aggregate, especially at this price point. Portions are not large, but theyre certainly enough for anyone who doesnt want to stuff themselves and still take half the meal home in a piggy bag. Lunch runs about $6.00 including potatoes (choice of style), one vegetable side, and either soup (a good catfish sort-of-gumbo) or salad bar (not extensive, but fresh). Drinks - coffee/tea/lemonade - are charged separately. Choices include cod and catfish cooked a couple of ways, a couple of shrimp dishes, various steaks (including the requisite chicken fried), quite good hamburgers (with an excellent homemade bun) and a couple of other things. Theres usually an "off-menu" lunch special (quite often a very good meat loaf). The dinner menu is also available at lunch if you want a wider selection. Dinner is in the $9.00-14.00 range. There is a wider selection than on the lunch menu, portions are somewhat larger, you get two side dishes plus potatoes, and both the salad bar and the soup. The fried oysters are especially good. Desserts are reputed to be quite good, but Ive always been too full to get one. One of these days.... The only real fault is that they do not serve beer or wine (or liquor). I do not know if they allow you to bring in your own. -- John Pierce, 02Sep2009

Is everyone that has visited this place mentally retarded? i manage a buisness in town and frequently stop by on weekends to monitor it. today i arrived in town and went online to search for a good place to eat here. APPARENTLY Shrimp Barn was "The place to be". i got in my truck and drove to the other side of the tracks to give this place a try. i was greeted by the sight of a building that i am most positively sure could be knocked down by a full blow from an asthmatic childs mouth. However, believing the "rave reviews" i saw on the web, i strutted inside only to be greeted by a man who looked as if he was on the verge of going into cardiac arrest, and his laborious breathing furthered my assumption. while he handed my girlfriend and I menus, i noticed that his hands looked as if they hadnt been washed since the Y2K scare, and there was enough dirt under his nails to use for the landscaping in front of a senior care home (appetizing). Anyways, i decided to order the two most pricey plates on the menu, the steak and the large platter, each around $18. we were the only people inside the entire time and the food took a SOLID 45 minutes to get to the window, and another two and a half minutes for the large man at the door to gather enough muscle strength to lift his girth from the undersized stool beneath him and retrieve our meals. to make a long story short, you people around Austin and San Antonio wouldnt know good Cajun or seafood if it got up from its plate and slapped you across the face. Now, i dont know if its just because i am from Houston (The Real South) or its because you weirdos here are to busy getting tattoos on your hands (seriously why do you all have tattoos on your hands?) to know real food. HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU POSSIBLY GIVE THIS PLACE 5 STARS? DID YOUR MOTHER FEED YOU OUT OF A CAN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE? If you know what real food tastes like, dont come here expecting any from this place.

Thanks to those who have taken the time to do a review. It helped me make the decision to go in today for lunch. You were oh so right abt two important things , dont let the looks from the outside fool you and the food is delicious. Once inside I found it to be clean, with a fresh soup and salad bar. The staff was really friendly. The food was really good. I had the lunch 4 fried shrimp plate ,catfish gumbo and salad. Couldnt eat it all . My Dad had the meat loaf plate, and he had left overs too. Cant wait to go back. Oh , word to the wise get there early . Small restaurant. That fills up fast at lunch. .

We put address in GPS. This is located in residential area. We pulled up granddaughter said nasty. We decided to try it. OMG it is excellent. We ordered shrimp and frog legs. With these plates you get salad and gumbo. On plate choice of potato, main dish, two onion rings and home made bread. My granddaughter loves gumbo said it was best. Service was great. We will eat here anytime we are in area. As they say dont judge a book by its cover.

One of my favorite places. The service is always excellent and the food is even better. Almost everything is made from scratch. Love their Gumbo and the Swedish burger especially. Hidden out of the way but worth the effort to find. Limited seating so if you get there in the middle of the lunch rush there probably wont be any tables available. Come early or late when possible. Best salad bar in Seguin.

This restaurant rates high on "home-town, out of the way local" restaurant that the locals have to direct you to. Nothing fancy about the decor, just relaxed Texas style, but the service is good and the ample amount of food is too. We are going there this weekend. Yum. Oh the guy who reviewed on Sept.8,09 gave it two stars for a good review. Guess he doesnt understand the rating system.

I am happy to have stumbled accross this place. It is a true diamond in the ruff. Frog legs, catfish, chicken fried steak, tilapia, salsbury steak, catfish gumbo. So far thats all I have tried and all excellent. The service is great as they are real people, very nice and friendly, no fake smiles here. If you want a great meal at a teriffic price this is it.

As the title says, this is my favorite Seguin restaurant. That might not be saying much, but I would pair it against many other restaurants in South Central Texas, of any kind, and its quality, freshness and great service would out do them all. I will give this place my business as long as I can and spread the word to everyone I know.
