Stunningly amazing old school pizza and grinder place. PRO: Cheese and pepperoni pizzas are the best in CT. Without question youll like it. The crust is crisp, sauce is deliciously seasoned, and the cheese is the perfect level of stringy. Grinders are as massive as youd expect. Im a huge fan of the meatball and eggplant combo grinder. Its extremely dense, but spectacular. CON: Local area is awful. You may not want to visit when its dark out. The parking is the worst youve ever seen. Theres like 2 spaces up front and then wherever you can fit on the road. Inside is crazy out dated. Theres one aspect of it thats kind of cool because its frozen in the 1980s,but then you snap back to reality and realize its kind of sad and lazy. They have a minimum spending limit for credit cards. I think its around $20. That can be very frustrating for those of us without cash and only looking to buy a limited amount of food.

Im gonna have to say 3 stars at the absolute most. Bought a combo grinder and the bread and meat was good but they have a limited amount of toppings and the veggies are sparse. The grinders in general are expensive for what you get, and what you can get at other places. $9 for a HALF grinder and $18 for a whole is ridiculous. Ive never seen a grinder for that much in my life. You can get a bigger and better grinder stacked with toppings in new britain for 5 or 6 dollars. Also theres a place in Torrington called Carbones that makes the best italian combos and best grinders in general for similar prices. Just sayin....

I return to my old stomping grounds every so often and wouldnt think of not stopping at Giant Grinder on Franklin Avenue. Its that good, although tackling a whole grinder may be biting off more than you can chew. They are delicious and they are big. Ive never had a better grinder. The old neighborhood may be changing, but before its a thing of the past get to Giant grinder - and then Modern Bakery if you have room for some unbelievably good desserts.

Started eating here late 80s or early 90s but after moving hadnt been here in a few years. Returned to get my favorite of all grinders - the chicken cutlet. It was still incredible - 3 to 4 layers of tender chicken, cheese, red and green peppers, and sauce. A half grinder can easily feed two people. I got an extra one to take home and it was a little dry - Im sure you can ask for a little extra sauce on the side.

Who Me

I grew in South End, been coming here since mid 80s if you want a big heavy duty working man grinder this is the spot, but honestly they substitute quality with quantity, chicken is anything but tender, it tasty but definitely not tender, as a sandwich person I feel the bread should be the foundation to great sandwich, those grinder rolls make a marginal grinder.

The place is famous for huge grinders . When I went I got a slice of pizza just to check it out . Im glad I only bought one slice it was huge to and the toppings loaded up . Nice thick crust good sauce . I have had grinders here before and they are well worth it . My only gripe is the place is dirty and beat up , spend some money and remodel yikes

By far the worst, as a new yorker I wouldnt give this place a 2nd thought. Low quality meats, meat in a hero us the most important thing.believe it or not they put too much on but it doesnt matter when you are using subway quality meat.the pie (pizza) is even worse.I dont know how they have been there so long.dont go dont waste your money.

Amazing food. The bread is ALWAYS fresh!! The meatball grinder is my personal favorite. Franklin Giant Grinder is one of the original grinder shops on Franklin Ave, they have been around since I was a child, that alone tells you this place is Great!!!

Honestly, this is the best chicken parm Ive ever had. I lived in CT from birth til about 18... Im 29 now and still make the trip from out of state to get these things. Theyre that good. Get extra sauce on the side... youre welcome. haha

Best grinders in the state of Connecticut. Family owned and top quality ingredients. Not to mention that they serve alcohol, have a large dining area, and...a half grinder more than serves 2 persons. This place is a gem.

Ordered the whole chicken parm grinder for lunch. Absolutely delicious. If you only need 1 meal, order a half and if you like sauce, ask for extra sauce. Not much sauce on the sandwich otherwise. Will be back.

Grew up in Hartford. On a recent visit from my new home in TX, Franklin Giant Grinder was one of my first stops. Just as I remembered. Excellent! Nothing like it in TX.

Slow service. Menu is kind of weird and hard to understand unless youre a regular. However, the food was excellent. They do a great job of making it.

Good was delicious! Meatball grinder was my favorite, but the capicola was also very good. A lot of food for the price! Would definitely come back.

Meatballs taste like canned cat food. Awful. Grinder soggy. No sauce. Very dissatisfied. Expensive. Was looking forward to a local institution.

Huge amount of meat so a half (8 inch) will fill you up and is worth the $8.50. This half is bigger than Subways foot long across the street
