Very disappointing. Many of the reviews gave praise but the food did not have much flavor other than salt. The fried rice that came with my meal was yellow and had what looked to be ground beef or pork in it. It didnt really taste bad but Ive never had fried rice like this and cant say i enjoyed it. The egg rolls looked good but again had no flavor except salt - same for crab rangoon. How do you mess up crab rangoon? The Mongolian beef was okayish and greyish but it also wasnt Mongolian beef but pepper steak. From my experience, mongolian beef is beef, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, chili peppers and green and white onion. Theirs had bell peppers, onions, bamboo and sadness. General Tso chicken was soggy and flavorless, except for salt. Peng Chang-kuei is rolling over in his grave right now - RIP brother. Luckily, I have Sriracha to put on everything. Im from Houston and I heard that SA is not known for their Chinese food but I was hoping that I heard wrong. I still have faith though. Even though I can make these dishes at home I want a good take-out Chinese place - doesnt have to be great just good. Sorry for the rude review but I feel I just wasted money since the food is just going in the garbage. Maybe ill just save it and keep putting Sriracha on it.

My wife and I went there today and it turned out to be a horrible visit. This place used to serve good food but not anymore. First our waitress was visibly upset because my wife wanted fried rice instead of white rice on a dish she wanted. Our water and soft drink tasted dirty. I ordered the lemon chicken and she a combination lemon chicken and shrimp platter. The rice looked like it was kept over night and tasted like it was reheated in a microwave. Im not sure what kind of crust was on the chicken but it was bland almost tasteless. We could only eat a small portion of our plate before we decided to just get up and not ever eat here again. It used to be a nice place to eat with good food and atmosphere but not anymore. We both love Asian dishes and eat at several all over town and came a lot of extra miles for what we thought was going to be a treat and what was really in reality a completely worthless visit. Also the parking there leaves you feeling very uneasy, and the lifeless atmosphere only added to our disappointment. Their service also only reflected the bad attitude of management after we brought up our concerns The waitress took our order and left never to recheck on us. The only person who gave us a smile was the cashier.

Let me qualify the following statement by saying Hong Fong Chinese Restaurant was the very first Restaurant I went to when I arrived in San Antonio in 1982 and I have been a steady loyal customer for that’s right 31 years. The food is like all restaurants fluctuates form year to year depending on the Head Chef. Over the years it has been at a consistently good place to dine, my wife and children view it as one of our special places to go. That being said today at lunch I decided to stop in as I have many times before. I ask for a tea in a to-go cup the waitress complied, when I was paying the cashier rang me up and I signed the receipt, and then noticed I had a to-go cup then charged me just under $0.50 extra for the Styrofoam cup “without a lid”. Really! I mean at least know how to roll the costs for a Styrofoam cup without a lid into the bill before you have the customer pay at the cashier counter. I know times are tough however one to-go cup over 31 years is going to break the bank? I looked on line for the same cups and you can get 500 cups for $26.00 that’s just $0.05 a cup. Hong Fong Chinese Restaurant “Really!”

Living on the other side of town means that I dont get to visit Hung Fong as often as Id like, and I will admit there is only one dish that I eat here regularly that keeps me coming back. I have visited with coworkers who have been less than amazed with the food and would probably rate this place a 3 or 4 at most based on the dishes that they consumed. However, they have the most unique and delicious Sesame Chicken that I have ever had, and I highly recommend you try them out. I realize it may be a little too much to give them 5 stars based primarily off of one menu item, but it is THAT good and will keep me coming back for the foreseeable future. They have good, but not great, sweet tea. For me, that is a huge plus because I cant remember visiting any other Chinese restaurant that actually serves sweet tea! The service is average Chinese restaurant service - they know the cheapskates are already barely going to tip them, if even, and I bet even the most generous tippers still tip pretty low. Same story at every Chinese restaurant I visit, so no points deducted there.

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. My husband and I just love the crab Rangoon. The only thing is that sum of the waitresses are mean and rude. They ALWAYS try to rush us when theyre taking our order. Ugh just plain rude. Oh and the ugly Chinese man thats always there, he wears glasses...dont know his name and not sure if hes part owner or what but anyway he has a BIG MOUTH because he made sarcastic and awful remarks while taking our order. I find that Very Unprofessional when dealing with "regular customers" such as ourselves. I will never forget the things he said when he took my husbands order. I am still upset over his ugly comments. But I sure would miss the food if we stopped going over this. We do deserve respect upon entering any restaurant...especially if were regulars.

You either have a taste for some real, gourmet, fresh cooked, original chinese recipes or you are the type that eats the type of warmed up food that is served by the likes of chinese buffets or even from that panda express place. If you like that manufactured type of food, you will probably not be into this place. The fried rice is so yummy, its not that type of fried rice that people fry and add soy sauce to. Its real fried rice. Check this place out if youre into chinese food and see for yourself why this is the oldest chinese restaurant in San Antonio. If you go around lunch time you will find special and quick service but I find that the food is tastier at dinner time as I guess they can take their time and make it more flavorful and I aint mad at that. ;)

Service is bad, they are rude they dont check up on you often and they cant really communicate with you. The Food is horrible, sure the quantity they serve is a large portion but that still doesnt cover the fact that the food is not at all good. The rice ( fried rice ) I had, tasted like old rice that was heated up in the microwave. The chicken I ordered ( lemon chicken ) came as chicken strips and the fried part was coming off the chicken. The chicken it self was room temperature and tough, and the lemon sauce was like water. I sat there for about 5 minutes trying to satisfy my hunger but it was too bad I had to ask for my money back which Ive never done before. I do recommend going down the street to KINGS PALACE instead !
