After driving from Dallas with another couple to eat here we were sad to be treated so poorly. Starting with only one menu for four people we asked the hostess for a candle....she couldnt find one but the bartender/assistant manager could. He was also able to find three more menus. So we ordered a bottle of wine....they were out. Ordered a different wine...it was the last bottle. Ordered mussels....out. Ordered mushrooms.....out. No manager, but the first bartender/assistant manager did a good job of trying to recover by bringing us a plate of appetizers. We ordered....one of us ordered veal and specifically asked if the chef could butterfly cut it....it came back as a pork chop and the waitress was told to just take it back and take it off the bill. I asked for a doggy bag....they took my half-eaten steak and mashed potatoes and never brought it back! So, we ordered after dinner drinks and waited for a dessert menu. When the second bartender/assistant waiter came to the table (when we told him about our service he laughed) we thought he had a dessert menu in hand but it was the bill. Infuriated, my boyfriend tossed the bill on the floor because it was all full price and no one tried to appease us. We were then asked to leave..not to pay and leave, but to leave...which we did and asked to have the manager to call us. Before we got back to Dallas, Kathy, the manager called and began accusing us of throwing the bill at a waitress and skipping out on our bill! Then, called the police on us. So, of course, we paid the bill even though we paid for food I didnt get to finish eating. Too bad because the food was fairly good....the service was unbelievably bad. We eat out a great deal and have never been treated so poorly. Clearly, the result of poor management trickles down through the ranks and is spoiling the potential for an excellent dining experience. I hope no one else ever experiences this sort of treatment.

October 13th 2011 Went for our 10th wedding anniversary because of the good reviews. Well lets start with decor, wait lawn chairs in the dining room, no waiting area unless you count the front door entrance, the garden stones that look like they came from freecycle and mismatched/ missing. (Ambience feels like a homeless shelter with lots of Chef Pictures on the walls) Now lets get to the food, not even going to talk about service it was that bad, no drink then wrong drink and my cup reaked of cigarettes (yes i sent it back, again.) Food pricing seemed fair if it was fresh and cooked the same day and at a REAL Steakhouse/ restaurant (felt more like a ny dirty deli) Steak was to be prepared medium rare bloody, I got a medium well steak that had almost no pink meat at all, the potatoes look great then you taste a frozen and recooked potatoe with cream cheese and parmesan that had been re-fried. Then the chef comes out and avoids our table as i have sent back a steak and a drink which must have offended him. My wife who was months pregnant ordered a steak that was requested as medium and it came out as well done, but she was hungry tired and at this point wanted to get out of this horrible establishment. Well we are done and have to let people know this place is a joke, has horrible food, bad ambiance, poor service and an overpriced menu.

After reading some of the reviews, I was a bit concerned. My husband and I had a gift certificate for here and so decided to go for our anniversary. My husband got the scallops with bacon for an appetizer and loved them. The bread that we were brought was so-so, nothing special, a little hard. The steaks and the special Salerno potatoes were awesome! Loved them and ate far too much. Our desert was the special one they brought for our anniversary - it was like a rolled pecan brittle with a chocolate like mousse inside...delicious! Our waiter recommended the wines for us and we were happy with these - very good. Our waiter was very helpful, attentive and friendly. We certainly loved the food. The "bad" things: decor could use a face lift. New paint and decorations would help. The flowers on our table were pathetic and starting to dry out...shouldve been tossed three days before. Our table was right across from the kitchen. NOT a good view, and also sometimes the kitchen got very loud (chef pounding, etc). Not sure why we were put there, as there were plenty of other tables available that were further away.

This place defines special occasion restaurant. The prices are high, but more than fair. They hit all the sweet spots for me, with a broad range of dishes ranging from oysters Rockefeller and smoked salmon, to locally harvested axis deer to desserts that show thoughtfulness and creativity. The waitstaff knows the menu, and is perfectly capable of recommending their favorite based upon what you describe as liking or feeling like. You dont usually need to book reservations, but its probably not a bad idea if youre not just going on a whim. I dont leave here for under 150USD for 2 people (drinks included), but Ive never regretted a visit. They renovated recently, but it still has an oddly comfortable vibe that I love.

22 years and finally a review...Morris the owner, a worldwide acclaimed chief, is almost always cooking and working the room. He and his staff of well trained professionals have always made us feel welcome and more so like family. I have attended his cooking workshops, had Morris cater events at our home and eaten at the restaurant and drank in the bar for the last 2 decades. The food is always well prepared, beautifully plated and delicious. I move up and down the menu and it is all worth a taste. Dont overlook the bar, cocktails and apps or dinner is also a very cool experience. Go there once and Im confident you will be impressed, every time after that you are truly family to Morris and his staff.

I was our 10th wedding anniversary and things were rolling when we set the reservation. We were asked if there was a special occasion. Very short after arrival we were seated in their quaint establishment. The food was awesome even a steak well done had juices rolling out and mine at medium well was succulent. My wife and I though that we had eaten enough when the wonderful server brought out a custom dessert with Happy 10th Anniversary. Its attention to detail that makes places like the Grotto a must Eat place. Oh and BTW the dessert was absolutely awesome. MW

Eric our server was exceptional. He made our experience memorable after a poor greeting from the hostess because we didnt have a reservation for a party of 8 at 5:15pm with only 2 people in the restaurant at the time. However, after that, it was all good and then some. Our food was great, and then it was topped off with the chef coming to our table and inviting our 5 kids back into the kitchen to help make desserts. Location was perfect as well, just across the street to the Village Church.

Excellent service, amazing food but details certainly overlooked for the price range. The bathrooms were dirty with wires hanging from the ceiling, no background music, & coffee is brought out in a maxwell house coffee pot instead of a carafe or even french press. Also, they were filming a commercial or something during our dinner which was a bit disruptive. Overall, the food was so good that we will definitely be back but hopefully they will hire a cleaning service soon!
