The tables at the restaurant are admirable. Im not sure how old they are but they have inset bits of tile and look really retro. The waitstaff couldnt be nicer. Spanish Village is a Houston institution and is historically significant, one of the older Mexican restaurants still in existence here. Back in the day, the combo plate that featured things such as a taco, chile con queso, a chalupa and/or guacamole salad was known as The Ladies Special or The Summer Special at many Mexican restaurants around Houston. I would recommend you forego the enchilada/tamal/rice/beans plate and stick with these summer items piled high with crisp lettuce and diced tomatoes. The selection is served as the starter on the Alfonso Pico Special: Chile Con Queso, Guacamole Salad, Beef Taco, Veracruzana and I would stop there and not go on with the hot plate of tamale/enchilada/rice/beans. That would be my recommendation for your first visit. AND...my rating of four stars is based only on the items in a Summer Special type meal.

--TRUCK STOP FOOD, AT HIGH PRICES- This place is CRAP! I read the bad reviews but wanted to give this place a try to see for myself. Ive lived in Texas my whole life, and this is the worst "mexican" food Ive ever had in a restaurant. Cheese out of a can! Stale beans and rice! Cheese enchilada had cheap american sharp in it! I paid $13 for a tiny hard shell taco, one gross cheese enchilada, a tamale that shouldve been fresh but was obviously dried out underneath a heat lamp...and beans and rice that were stale/heat lamped to death! I never review restaurants...But I felt compelled to help steer people away from this hole! The staff was friendly...thats my only complement. The food is ridiculously overpriced, and whether or not its been there for years IT SUCKS. Save your money and go to a truck stop if you are looking for this quality of mexican food. Oh, and wilted/brown lettuce on my kid sized taco...TRUCK STOP FOOD, AT HIGH PRICES

Have lived in the Katy area for 40+ years and have visited beau coup Mexican restaurants, from Beaumont to Austin and beyond. Had not visited Spanish Village until a couple of weeks ago, but I will be going back. This is NOT an upscale place. In fact, it reminds me of an ancient drive-in restaurant where they enclosed the parking lot at some point to make whats now Spanish Village. Dont be deterred by that comment. I certainly could be wrong about the architecture, and it certainly does not detract from the fine service and truly excellent food! They have some interesting menu items, including a salsa that lit me up, and some unusual combo offerings. I am not in their neighborhood often, but when I am, I definitely will visit again.

Food was not authentic, they were rude and seen like they had a problem with me been latino. Food was nasty, no flavor and too much cheese. I dont mind paying the price for great tasting food but you can get better authentic food at another restaurants, this place is outrageous on their prices too. I wouldnt recommend to anyone, keep driving there are better tasting mexican food restaurants in the area that arent trashy looking & racist, unless you really dont know about authentic mexican food oh like one of the reviewers mention the owner only wants white (gringo) customers because they dont know about food and they like his menu, thats sad!

There is NO reason that a Mexican establishment has to charge the prices that Spanish Village does. Mexican or Tex Mex is not cost heavy to produce. My profession is Culinary Training and Certifying so I know this fact. The same quality food can be bought for $4.95 and $5.95 in Mexican risided neighborhoods throughout east Houston. Moreover, if the prices want to imitate Glorias in midtown Houston, then where are the profits going? Surely not in their building. Sad..but Im new to the area and wanted ro find a quality Tex Mex place by where I live and this was very sad to me. Price gouging is just unfair.

The Salsa they bring with the Chips is amazing. Very nice kick to it. The margaritas are strong and very tasty. Their menu is a little pricy compared to other mexican restaurants but the food did have some good flavor. My friend loved his fajitas with ranchero sauce and their cheese and beef enchiladas are amazing. I read a lot of comments about the waitstaff being rude and i didnt take it as rude. The main guy is just straight to the point. Overrall its a good place that I could see myself going back to especially as college kid living right down the road. The place has a lot of Culture in it.

Me and my wife went in and were treated very rudely. My wife and i are muslim my wife had her hair covered at the time and it seemed to be a problem for them. They began to speak in spanish about us not knowing that my wife is Mexican. It hurts me because i live in the same neighborhood just one block away. I see lots of people go into their business but I rarely see any people of color like myself. Although i know or at least i think the owners are Latino it seems as if they would prefer to have their business filled with the new gentrified look of our neighborhood.

Pricier than expected, but decent Mexican food. The waitress was super sweet. The manager (?) was a little weird about the fact that I brought in my water bottle. I bring a bottle of water everywhere I go to stay hydrated and given my blood pressure otherwise runs low. I ordered an iced tea, so its not like I bought any less than I otherwise would have by bringing in my water bottle... water is generally free at restaurants. Super weird. Thus, the price for the food and the unnecessary pestering dropped a star. Otherwise, a positive experience.

There is little that sates me like Spanish Village "special" enchilidas and a house margarita. Very little will tempt me off my clena eating path but gosh darnit if those enchilidas arent the most legit thing in this city. And the rita is a force to reckoned with. Beware of sticker shock. In its humble (slightly more than run down and ghetto) appearance, the prices look more like their upscale neighbors in Mueum District or Monstrose. However, Spanish Village is a legend. And it never disappoints.

I always go into places with a long positive history hoping for the best, but I am honestly surprised this place is still In business. I ordered to go and the waitress was really nice but the food was just horrible. The queso tasted like velveeta cheese. The beans has some strange seasoning I couldnt put my finger on and everything else was so bland I would def not recomend

Low-grade Tex Mex in a Houston institution. Was not impressed by the food, by loved the atmosphere. Its in a 1950s home. They used to have a drinking club upstairs (when Texas was dry) and an apartment on the third floor. Really fun place to chill with friends before heading to Midtown. Not super accommodating to asking for off menu items or for sides as main dishes.

Dont look for authentic mexican food here. I wasnt exactly sure what tex mex was but it is Taco Bell. I ordered chile con queso thinking it was a pepper with cheese, but i got a plate of cheese wiz with picante sauce. The best things about the place: the Margarita!; the salsa picante; and definitely the SERVICE!! The waitresses and owner were pretty great!
