Everything was great, right up to the point where we met the new owner. Place was clean, food was really good, service was good, price was good, and it was nice to have a chat with the new owner but BUT I predict doom and gloom in this restaurants horizon. He wasnt particularly interested in learning how I drove up & down the road before finally aiming towards his restaurant, and then had to decide between vietnamese and the indian restaurant in the same parking area. We got out of the car and stood in the parking lot in order to decide vietnamese vs. indian. LISTENING is the new owners issue, I think. He was enthusiastic and told us all about how he wanted to be the best Pho restaurant in all of the Austin area. "Only Pho Round Rock" is the new business name, losing decades of brand recognition. Bad move, dude. No one cares a rip about going to the best Pho restaurant anywhere. Its soup. Its just soup. Plain, ordinary, everyday soup. And on hot days (its Austin), who drives long distances to get the "best" super hot liquid food in the entire City. Sorry dude, its a nice dream and all, but I think its a dumb one. You have a neighborhood restaurant and you ignore 20 years of customers and what they way (its not Pho) instead of what you want to serve (Pho) at your financial peril. Someone needs to stop you, I think, before you ruin a good thing. And its a minor thing, but PLEASE, all restaurants, ALL restaurants need to make their young service staff STOP saying "No Problem" every time they have an interaction with a customer. The approprate response to "Thank you" is NOT "No Problem". Idiot. And if I ask "May I please have chop sticks?", the appropriate response is "Yes", or "Ill get them right away." and it is NOT "No Problem". I have a PROBLEM with "No Problem", first because it creates an awareness of a denial of the existance of a problem. No one was thinking problem until you, you young twit, started "No Problem"-ing me at every single opportunity. And besides that, Im the paying customer. *I* decide if theres a problem or not, and NOT you. Duh. I dont need you (or anyone else) to give me a constant barrage of "no problems" every time I need a refill of my iced tea, or whatever. But thats minor, and endemic to the entire (retarded) generation. The main point here is that the new owner is so busy trying to realize his own dream that he may not be able to hear the voice of his paying customers, and believe me, that WILL be a "problem".

Ive been going here since my freshman year in the dorms and have been in love ever since. Now, in my 5th year living in Austin after living no where near campus for 4 of them, Hoa Hoa remains my favorite place for Asian cuisine (probably my favorite restaurant period since I love Asian food) and Ive been to SOO many Asian restaurants in Austin to try them out. Its a Vietnamese restaurant so try some of their Vietnamese food instead of being dull and getting some Sesame Chicken or something (I recommend Vietnamese House Special Chicken or their Vermicelli if you prefer noodle dishes)!! However, their traditional American Chinese stuff is better than most places too. The owners are super friendly and if you go enough theyll know you by name and treat you like a friend. The food is cheap (like $6-7) especially considering the massive portions (each ends up being about 1.5 meals for me, 2 for my girlfriend). Dont be fooled by the fact that its in the nasty Dobie Mall, this food is AMAZING, its owners are AMAZING, and its prices/dish size are AMAZING!

Asked if their soup has MSG... Instead of the "yes" or "no" answer I was expecting, the Asian manager and the woman from the kitchen said they wouldnt give me the recipe. The language barrier was too great to approach on an empty stomach, so I decided against the soup. However, though I only had that one question, and was ready to order otherwise, I was told to step aside so that the person who had just walked up to the counter could order. These are cultural issues which I prefer to embrace, but others might not be as forgiving. Food was okay at best, but I wasnt expecting much from a Dobie Mall establishment.

I WAS a regular customer at this restaraunt, until the HORRIBLE customer service that I received today over the phone. Their Happy Hour Special ends at 2pm, so I tried to place an order for pickup @ 1:30pm, for the Happy Hour Menu. The woman I spoke w/ on the phone REFUSED to take my order, saying that I must come into the restaraunt to order take out, & all b/c she didnt want to honor the discounted H.H. prices. Well, if charging an extra couple of dollars is that IMPORTANT to that HOa HOa, she just lost a regular customer!!

Food is OK, but takes too long. I live only 15 minutes away and the delivery has taken over an hour and a half. I called 20 minutes ago and was told that it had left. I called just now and was told that it JUST left. I was told that they had to many orders and they would fix their policy in the future. Could barely get an "Im sorry" and much less an real apology or a refund. And whats worse is that they charge a 3 dollar delivery fee and I pre-tipped 2 dollars... I bet the food will be cold if it ever arrives.

So-so place for Chinese food, but good if youre desperate for some near UT (and if you dont want to walk to Cocos for whatever reason). Not the best ambience but its okay if youre there just for the food. They have a $7 lunch special which allows you to choose you two entrees, plus rice or fried rice, an egg roll, and soup. Its okay. During a previous visit, I ordered off the menu and it took quite a while. So Id recommend sticking with the lunch specials.

The food is good enough; the ingredients are somewhat cheap (their noodles are basically spaghetti, etc). You get good portions so I can normally get two meals out of one $6-$8 dollars order. The woman taking the orders is always scowling and its something of a downer doing business with her. You have to order at the counter yet they still expect a tip. Not much natural light inside. Sometimes they get my order wrong.

Im seeing mixed reviews so I decided Id add my thoughts on this place. I got sesame chicken and fried rice. Pretty simple entree, usually good wherever I try it. This is the worst Ive had. The rice was dry and flavorless, the chicken was less than mediocre, and it just didnt make a good first impression. If I ever came back to eat here again(unlikely), I would try a complete different entree.

This place was a favorite for my older brother when he was a student at UT, and now it is a favorite for me as a student. Lunch plates typically include a soup and drink at an affordable price perfect for students seeking a quick meal during the day. I recommend the hot and sour soup and triple delight. Yummy!
