Southern Belly will take you on a culinary journey that no other restaurant in Columbia or anywhere Ive ever been has. People like to think that the best food theyve ever eaten has to be expensive Southern Belly likes to counter this point with every sandwich they bring out. What they do is bring us back to our roots. Our basic animal instincts crave meat, grease, salt and southern belly delivers these on a silver platter. Let me give you a typical southern belly experience for me. I drive up in my car with the sweet columbia air flowing through my windows. As I approach a light breeze carries the tantalizing aromas of a southern belly sandwich though my window and I immediatly cannot contain my excitement. I walk into the restaurant and as always order a southern belly sandwich and wait for its arrival. I look around and feel like a young lad at his birthday part. Overjoyed. Ecstatic. Then the sandwich comes out and let it plunge into the nectar of sauce they have provided. That first bite. Boy oh boy oh boy. There is nothing can bring a persons heart more joy than the first bite of a southern belly sandwich. I eat that sandwich with my head down and eyes closed fully appreciating the succulent flavors. Finally when Im done I sit back let my arms come to there side and appreciate the gift of southern belly.

Worse customer service!! The waitress was extremely rude. This was our first visit. When we arrived there was one table available, we asked them to clean it, it took them 5 mins to come clean it she barely wiped it down. They brought us 2 cups of tea when we ordered 4, she told us they didnt have anyone but were making some and would bring it out we asked for two waters and she got mad that we needed water. After looking at the menu for a few minutes they came to get our order and got made when we were not ready. A few minutes later they asked if we were ready again, when we told her no she stormed off. We were finally ready, she came to take our order and told us they were out of Cole slaw. She told us they had been busy, when I said you cant eat a BBQ sandwich without Cole slaw she told us we could go somewhere else. That it didnt really matter since they were busy today. She then tried to charge us for the FOUR sweet teas, even though we only received two. She argued with us and gave us attitude while we were leaving. We came from augusta ga, to eat there since we were in the area, never again will I come there. Very rude and unprofessional!! The restroom was disgusting as well. ** The only reason you got one star is because it wont let you leave none.

What do a golden cherub, a stuffed three-toed sloth, and a signed picture by Lioneil Ritchie have in common? They all are guarding the bar at the best BBQ joint in Columbia. Maybe thats a bit of a misnomer because all you can get is pulled pork, and the only form in which to get it is via sandwich. But dont let that fool you. This place dishes out some of the best smoked pork around. The sandwiches are all out of this world and the Midas Sauce will have you craving a bottle that you can take home with you. My suggestion? Southern Belly dipper with Texas toast instead of French Roll and Midas sauce instead of white sauce. Add the red peppers and jalapeños from the DJango for an extra kick. I also opt for double coleslaw instead of Lays for what its worth. Enjoy!

Was in town from Florida for the UCF vs. USC football game. My group was at Buffalo Wild Wings Friday night and we asked our waitress for the best BBQ place in town. She said "without a doubt, Southern Belly". After we lost the game Saturday, we fought the traffic and found Southern Belly. Wow, what a place. I had the Django and it was off the chain (no pun intended). I thought I would order a second one but my belly would continue to go further south (pun) LOL. Waitresses were sweet and tended to our every need. A must visit and a neat tucked away BBQ joint. Bring an empty stomach for the best pork around. I never eat cole slaw and theirs was gone in a minute. Go Knights!!!

I got a traditional sandwich with the Southern Bell-y (white) sauce topped with pickles. No more, no less. It was PERFECT. The denseness of the bread, the sweet and smoky sauce, the flavor of that meat. Oh, lawd. I could hop a flight and go back now. You really didnt even need sauce! (but who am I kidding? Gimme that sauce.) Top it all of with a beer, a side of Lays chips, and tasty coleslaw. My day was made. My only desire, if I were ever granted a wish there, was to have homemade pickles. That would have brought this 10 to an 11. Homemade pickles are SO easy to make and they would have been killer.

Let me start by saying that the pork and sauces are quite good. However, it is perhaps my unrealistic expectation of a purported "BBQ joint" in SC that one should be able to order meat by volume as well as sides. Not being a sandwich consumer, then, my main issues with Southern Belly are 1) they dont do meat by volume (pound/half pound); and 2) they dont do sides. When I last visited, I asked for a half-pound of meat, and was told I would have to pay for the equivalent of two full sandwich meals. It was my fault for going through with the transaction, but I ended up paying nearly $20 for it.

Ive read the reviews, and Ive been here several times and would just like to say, the food is very good. Sure, they may only do bbq but, less is more! I have driven from Columbia, SC to Lexington, NC where they are supposed to have the best bbq and found out after a couple hours of driving that it "wasnt all that". Someone wrote they drove 15 miles and were disappointed? Give me a break! I will always take a hole in the wall over a chain. My experience here has always been good. The staff is very friendly and if your coming for bbq, this is the place to come.

Good BBQ and sauce with large-ish portions, relatively quick service. My only issue here is there are no good sides. Their only side is slaw with chips. So you eat this really good BBQ and then follow it up with greasy, generic, potato chips. While youre driving home the greasy potato chip indigestion kicks in and all you can remember from your visit is the upset stomach you got from all the chips. Dont let greasy chips be what people think of when your establishment comes to mind. "Yeah, eat there, but avoid the chips..."

Was in town on a business trip and wanted a quick lunch so I stopped by and was blown away by the taste of the BBQ in this place Just a tiny joint with a limited menu, but I found myself wishing that I lived in Columba so I could become a regular. Had the traditional and it was awesome!! The only you need after this sandwich is another one. Not that its small, it comes with a pile of closed pit meat and that good ole SC mustard style sauce between two thick cut slices of grilled white bread. Mmmmmmmm.
