UPDATE: After posting the review below back in May, the manager reached out and offered a gift card if we would give the Gallaria location another try. We went last night, and the food was light years better than our first experience. My pulled pork was much leaner and I was able to eat all of it...none of the fatty waste that I had to deal with the last time. My wife and son also enjoyed really good pork and brisket respectively. In addition, the staff treated us wonderfully, even before I ever presented the gift card to pay for my meal. We experienced very friendly service on our first visit (as noted in the original review), and this time the staff was even better. So, I am changing my review to 4 stars and definitely encouraging others to check out the Matthews City Barbeque location. The fact that the management was willing to listen to criticism and to offer a second chance meal is something that you dont see too often anymore. Nice job, Jordan and staff, and thank you! PREVIOUS REVIEW: Went to the Matthews location (Galleria) for the first time yesterday evening. The staff was very nice, but unfortunately the BBQ was a big disappointment. I ordered the pulled pork, and it was so fatty that I threw half of it away. I appreciate que places that take the time to trim the meat and serve it as lean as possible (Thank you Stallings Rock Store!). The meat that I was served was pretty bad. My wife ordered the same thing and hers was not nearly as fatty, so obviously the staff is not paying attention to how they are serving their product. The sides were good, but my mac & cheese was not even hot...makes me worry about their food handling practices. Maybe its because this location is new, but they have a very long way to go to be considered a top notch BBQ restaurant. I will not likely return since there are so many other superior choices in the area.

I have heard for weeks how awesome this place was and how much better it was than Macs Speed Shop. The line to order was ridiculous and while I appreciate the friendliness of the person taking the orders, it really really really slows things down...like snails pace slow. The system beyond that is efficient and fast. The various options of sauces was a great addition and one that earned this review a 4th star. The sweet BBQ sauce was amazing!! I had the pulled pork and it was delicious! The sides....not so much. I had the macaroni and cheese and fries with cheese sauce and bacon. I think the problem was the cheese sauce as it was the same sauce in both the Mac and the fries. The fries by themselves were golden brown and salted very well. That macaroni and cheese was absolutely horrid. My mom got the corn pudding and it was very good, the taste of regret made both my sides tastes worst. Overall it was good but not as good as Macs Speed Shop, but it could be if some adjustments were made. Watch out Macs!

This was my first visit after being told how great it was . I had the pulled pork lunch with 2 sides.the decor was pleasant , staff friendly ,but I was not impressed with the food .First bite of my pork was fat. In fact there was quite a bit of fat through out which i expected but felt i had more fat than meat. The fried okra was different. It was battered in corn meal but did not looked like it was fried. Very crumbly The slaw was ok . There were several sauces to select from. Did like the original. The restaurant was busy and extremely noisy, you could not have a conversation with your guest .you could hear patrons conversations from a cross the room. Thought I would try a pecan muffin but they were out .Common theme going on

BBQ is good, sauces are good, hush puppies are good, sweet tea is terrible, prices are way too high which is the only reason I havent returned. I spent nearly 13 on just a combo that had a mini bbq sandwich and 2 sides and a drink that was not part of the combo. In comparison my fav bbq chain Smithfields Chicken and Bbq has a combo with a full size sandwich a side and drink for under $7.00. City BBQ is not the only guilty party though Charlotte area bbq places are ridiculously high on food that is relatively lower priced outside of Charlotte. If you want good BBQ and have a lot of money to spend on it try this place but I am going to wait for the new Smithfields by that outlet mall.

Great food, but horrible service. I called at 7:30 p.m. to take advantage of the rib special. I was quoted a price and a pick up time. Not 5 minutes after ordering, I get a call back saying "sorry, we just ran out of ribs." I suppose this was not known when I ordered. I was offered the same discount on anything else, but I was not interested. My husband then decided to call at around 8:30 to order wings. He was told they were all out. Interesting...business hours are 10:30 am until 10:00 pm, but you have a very limited supply of food. They dont seem too interested in the obvious of cooking more food to keep pace with demand. Oh well, guess Ill take my coins elsewhere.

Jose greeted us in an exceptionally friendly manner as we came in the door. It was our first time at City Barbeque, and we were completely lost. Jose made us feel very comfortable. He treated us like family! He offered us many samples, explained the menu, endured endless questions. We decided to get the Mother Load at his suggestion, which was incredibly good and way beyond enough food for our party of 11 people. Jose followed up with us several times and made sure we were satisfied with our meal. The food and restaurant were excellent, but what made our experience extraordinary and memorable was Jose. I cant say enough about how well he treated us. Thanks Jose!

Good food great atmosphere. Theyve got the hip rustic atmosphere down and knock the food through the middle of classic and edgy BBQ. Most people will walk away pleased. The meat is well prepared, good selection, and pulled right in front of you. I could have asked for more smoky bits, but you run the risk of making it too dry. This was moist. Collards were the best thing I had there, made in a rich beef brisket jus. Green beans - meh. Okra has a fragile, non-greasy, corn meal batter. Vinegar slaw is not red slaw (which Im obsessed with) but had a fresher feel with what I would guess is rice wine vinegar - still enjoyable.

You stand in line to order at a register. Triple C and OMB are available. Pulled pork was good but cold even though I picked it up after the first time my name was called. Mac and cheese wasnt very good but the potato salad and vinegar slaw were good. Piedmont Pride sauce is a little spicy. Despite the crowd seating wasnt a problem. The busboy was busy keeping the tables clean. Will come back in a month to see if this restaurant has ironed out the kinks. Any issues are certainly fixable so give these guys some time.

Best BBQ in Charlotte in my opinion (and Ive tried pretty much all the others) My favorite is the pulled pork (melts in your mouth a) that can get with or without bun. You get to choose your sauce (also good without) from 6 choices so whether you like Eastern or Western NC style you have options. Dine in and pickup available. Suggest downloading their rewards program. So far since Matthews location opened Ive got free chocolate cake, free drink and $5 off next order.
