After parking my wife received a call from the party we were meeting at the Flying Saucer and were informed they were having their last round at World of Beers around the corner. After trying to get the group to pay and leave to go back to the Flying Saucer my car was towed away nearly 30 minutes from the parking lot. Although there are signs everywhere our intent was not malicious, ignorant, or disrespectful in any way, it was simply a change of plans at the last minute (temporarily) until we returned to the Flying Saucer. I am from a very large city in the NorthEast and similar parking issues are certainly up their as well but fortunately the signs deter about 90% of people from parking in a private lot without the need to tow the other 10%. This is another reason why Columbia and SC in general will NEVER become a destination and/or a place of much interest for anyone other than Gamecock fans of which I am not. I live 35 minutes outside the city and will never go to Columbia again to spend any money at any business. I have also sworn off any business that is locally owned by someone from SC. The owners of this lot have the most short term thinking in mind when they tow their customers and potential customers vehicles. Plans change, people come and go, why not just have an attendant that stop cars from entering the lot unless they are going to the restaurants on the listed sign? I think I know the answer to that and like so many other businesses in SC, I am pretty certain money is exchanged between the towing companies and the establishment owners. Its still 1955 here in sunny SC.

I had to wait awhile for this review, I had to get some perspective and make sure I was not giving this review unjustly! I had never been there and discovered it was basically a microbrewery. I went in with a positive attitude excited to try something new! Not a good choice. It was extremely hot and we had to ask the waitress if the air could be turned on and the manager came by about 20 minutes later and said the a/c had been turned on. It did get slightly cooler, eventually. Too little too late. I ordered the nacho plate as you can see in the picture. They were tauted as Angus steak nachos with cheese and pico dgallo. About 5 small, I mean small pieces of steak (Im guessing). Micro cheese sauce. I got 2 glasses of pinot (on sale) $16- glass not even half full, both times. My husband got the chicken burger, pictured. It was decent, he ordered it blackened, it was grilled only. He asked the waitress about it and all she could say was that she ordered it blackened and she guessed that that is how the cooks make it. I also went to the restroom, which was tolerable, and while I and other customers were in there, 2 waitresses were in there talking about a friend that had been dumped...yada ,yada ,yada, Im not even going to write about THAT conversation, inappropriate. So, 2 stars for the WHOLE experience. I will not be going back. I spent about $50...sad.

A few of us went to this place the other day for a late lunch....HUGE GIANT DISAPPOINTMENT. First, decor and beer selection gets an A. I like a beer hall Second, when our food came, in shifts because the server couldnt grasp the concept that you take EVERYONES order at the SAME TIME, so they can all EAT TOGETHER, the food was good! Normal pub grub style food..no harm no foul Third, Service was the worst I have ever experienced. Having worked in the service industry for years, it was apparent that the server was NOT trained properly, the manager never helped her (as she had multiple tables) and after we complained about our SHIFT LUNCH and having to go the bar to get refills, he came with the bartender as our replacement server. BUT he still never helped the server. SHAME SHAME SHAME! I hope this place pulls it together. But after that HUGE strike out, I doubt I will be back. There are other places in Columbia that I am sure provide better food and better service. Remember, if you cant WOW them with food and decor, at least dazzle them with excellent service.

I was supposed to attend a bachelors party at the Flying Saucer last night. After parking my vehicle behind the establishment I was informed that the rest of the party was still finishing their diner at Pearls, which is located on the same street. I walked up to Pearls to meet them with the intention on returning to the Flying Saucer for the actual party. After 45 minutes they finished paying their tab and we proceeded to walk towards the Flying Saucer when I witnessed my vehicle being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck of Schroeder’s Towing. The Flying Saucer has video surveillance of the lot and watched me park my car and then called to have me towed from the location in less than an hour. We had to follow my vehicle on the interstate for 25 minutes to the next town to get to the towing company and pay $135 dollars. I called the Flying Saucer today and they informed me that this is the new policy. I will not be frequenting their business again.

Dropped in for a beer at Monterrey with friends, and afterward walked my husband back to his car by Starbucks. When I got back, Monterreys or one of their crony partners (Flying Saucer, or Mamas and the Tapas), had decided to tow my car. I can appreciate the need to be judicious in guarding the limited parking downtown, but this ultra-liberal approach, aside from being wrong, cost me $135, damage to my cars front bumper, and driver side door. I would highly recommend anyone visiting downtown for an evening out to frequent any of the other Vista establishments that are more customer friendly and welcoming to their patrons. Recommendations - Colas, Ristorante Divino, Pearlz, and Nonnahs in particular. To be avoided - Flying Saucer, Monterrey, Mammas and the Tapps

Okay, Im here now. Im a visitor to the area, on business. Its a Sunday with only about 20 people here but it doesnt feel empty. I did like I always do at a new restaurant, I asked the waitress what she liked. She recommended the Big Dipper to eat and is was great! Its $3 pint night. I dont drink much and there were so many beers to choose from I couldnt decide so I asked the waitress what was the most popular. She suggest a Highland Gallic and it was great. I couldnt decide what to try next so she brought samples. To my surprise, I really liked the Thomas Street Doppelbock from Greenville SC. A dark beer. Ill come back next time I am in town.

As far as bars in columbia go, you wont find any better. Are there strobe lights and thumping techno pop? NOPE. How about frat boys bathing in testosterone and whooping and hollering about their sports team? NOPE... ok a few but not as many as five points! This is a place with GREAT beer, GREAT food, and GREAT service. I really cant find a thing wrong with it. A MUST-SEE bar in Columbia, for sure! Also, as great of a BAR as this place is, it is also a wonderful restaurant! The food is wonderful and it has some surprisingly authentic German cuisine mixed in with more traditional, but originally executed, bar dishes.
