Always on the hunt for new varieties and styles of craft beer, we headed over to the Toringdon Circle Shopping Center in Ballantyne to visit with Matt Cohen about Growler USA and to get the scoop on one of the Queen Citys newest hot spots. With over 100 craft beers available at any given time, the taproom / restaurant opened in January and has already secured its place as a must visit attraction for craft beer adventurers and novices alike. A steady flow of kegs from the Carolinas and beyond keeps their state of the art fridge packed; their draft beer chilled at 37°; and the taps constantly flowing. In fact, so much beer is flowing through their lines, the digital menu board is frequently updating. Fortunately each keg change immediately updates on the TapHunter App, so their menu is always up-to-the-second and just a notification away. With so many new craft breweries opening throughout the U.S., Matt, who is also the Managing partner of the Ballantyne location, says the menu and varieties their Cicerone trained servers are introducing to Charlotte is encyclopedic. They are arguably pouring some of the most unique brews from sea to shining sea. If youre new to the craft beer phenomenon, dont fret. The Growler USA menu may seem overwhelming, but beer is about individual taste preferences. Their offerings are there to ensure that they have something for everyone. P.S. Dont forget to download the TapHunter, soon to be followed by Untapped, for the latest and greatest Growler USA in Ballantyne has on tap.

Edit: Disregard Amber Burke she works for Growler USA (Director of Operations) and posts glowing reviews for the company to generate better press. The worse part, per say, is the prices. If you were to go to a local Total Wine store, you could buy a Birdsong Brewing Company - Say it to my face 32 oz. is $7.99, 64 oz. is $13.99. Now if you were to look at Growler USA the same drink is 32 oz. $11.99, 64 oz. is $23.99. The price hike varies from $10-20. One time there was a growler for $40, Total Wine had the same thing sitting at $18. Bartenders could do with learning more about the beer, even if it is just a few. Another point is Bartenders are supposed to lightly persuade you to buy certain drinks that are their selected favorites, or in this case, buy a growler of what you enjoy drinking. No bartender seems to be trying to sell the drink you enjoy the most that night in a growler as something to enjoy the following week or even the next night. Food is pretty damn expensive. Two different hot dogs cost $11 each. For $11, I hope that hot dog is pretty damn good. Despite the higher than normal prices, and bartenders that are not trying to sell you something different or to take home, the atmosphere is still nice, everyone is friendly. I will continue to go just because my friends enjoy it, hopefully they will consider this and lower their prices to a more reasonable range.

Went for lunch...service was terrible. There were only 2 tables with customers in the entire place it took our table of 4 over an hour to get our club sandwiches. On top of that we were never asked if we wanted anything but water to drink...and we ran out of water. 4 waitresses were standing at the bar talking and watching tv and were shocked to see one person from out table walk up and ask for more water. They do have a ton of beer...complete overwhelming list took up 4 legal sheets of paper, but the food menu is sad. For a place surrounded by great food (Viva Chicken, Thai cuisine, and Midwood Smokehouse all within mere feet) their menu had so little on it. No burgers. No fries. No pretzels, you can get ahi tuna as an app...2 salads one with salmon or one with crab (krab?). 2 different kinds of hot dogs, a wrap or a club sandwich, and chicken wings (a meal not an app), bratwurst gyro or sliders. I ordered kettle chips but was told 45 minutes after my order was placed that they didnt have any. I know they just opened, but their menu is nothing like the other locations and the waitresses were lucky that I wasnt in charge of the tip. I cant recommend this place to anyone. :( Hope they get better in the future but I wont be back.

Great beer selection, but prices are $1-2 higher than Ive ever paid in this area (a pint of birdsong jalapeno is $7). TV tap lists are all beer 2.0, but are too glary to be useful, the paper lists are nice. So many beers!! Get in my belly!! But my wallet is running for the door. I hope they bring the prices down and put more sports on, its kinda like drinking a beer in an airport concourse. Has my flight left? Incoming, departing beers? I tried to use taphunter to subscribe to their alerts, but it wants to install on my phone and read all my contacts (no!!). They have food, but who cares this is a beer hall. Can I order a beer from down at Vivas? That would be awesome. Im a local, Ill try it out a few more times. But please lower your prices or run specials so I dont feel like a tourist going there.

4 stars for selection, 1 star for service. Frankly, management needs to sit the servers down and simply TEACH them beer terms, styles, etc... When I asked for a certain beer the server just wanted to know the number... They knew nothing about beer. Theres no way that they could ever suggest a beer or compare like brews. They were as effective as Dennys wait staff. So, OK, then light a fire under the servers collective asses. The place was NOT packed and it took eons to get a beer... Geesh! I then had a growler filled and saw the beer tender wipe the foam off the top with her bare finger... YUCK! All it takes is a small knife or something but get your grimy finger out of my beer... Still grossed out.

My husband and I went for drinks after work Friday night. We were confused upon entering because theres no sign that says seat yourself and no one was in the front to direct you. We sat at a booth and waited close to 15 minutes for a waitress to even address us. She had zero knowledge of the brews. My husband ordered one and she came back telling us they were out. We ordered nachos and they were by far the WORST, most pathetic nachos Ive ever been served. There were maybe 15 chips on the plate, the cheese was not melted and still cold AND they were $9! We will most definitely NOT be back.

Beer selection is great but prices are pretty high even for the Ballantyne area. Service only deserves 1 star.. the waitress we had was clearly overwhelmed and avoided eye contact with all of her tables when she would walk by. The table next to us ended up walking up the bar to get their drinks since the waitress seemed to be avoided us all. If this place could work on their pricing, maybe offer weekly specials, and hire some more upbeat service (who also know how to differentiate between the many beers they serve), this place could have the potential to be great.
