I signed up for the Bastille Day special chefs dinner. Unfortunately there was nothing special about it except the mediocrity. A wine pairing was not available. The appetizer was OK, small jars of pate, cream cheese and some olives and garlic in oil with bread. The main entree was the big disappointment, a half of roasted chicken that was barely done, still bloody in the leg joint. It was accompanied by some sour potatoes and zucchini cole slaw. It was served without a clean dinner plate on the appetizer plate. Your were expected to butcher and serve the bird yourself. Nothing French about it. No sophistication. The dessert was a cup of mousse. My second glass of wine arrived after the dinner was completed. I cannot fathom how St. Jack was recently rated #1 in Portland. This was one of the worst celebrations of French independence that I have experienced. It was a dishonor to a noble people whose cuisine is renown. There are many other restaurants in Portland that would have been my first choice. Vive la France.

We werent terribly impressed with the food at St. Jack. They definitely fall in the "precious" category of restaurant that I want to avoid. The food was fine, but didnt warrant the price. For instance, how do you end up underwhelmed by a Lobster and Uni Bucatini? Over cooked lobster, for one. But that is just emblematic of a meal that should have been a homerun but only hit a double. Another example - Escargot braised, instead of served in the traditional style. This is the second time Ive been served braised escargot with bacon in the sauce. The bacon overwhelms the escargot...and frankly it tastes like hot dogs with escargot. Its not cute. Our wait staff was very nice. However, I found the dining room too crowded and loud. We wont return for dinner, but might try lunch...

Not bad by any means but then again nothing to write home about. In a city full of culinary treasures I think you can do better for you dollar. The lamb was done perfectly but the clams were a bit lackluster. The "legumes" were basic...roasted veggies with a dash of...well almost nothing. The deserts were fine but again overpriced. The prices were a bit high and I repeat that I think you can do much better for a little less and little more than what youll pay here.

The service was excellent. The environment was quaint and intimate like a parisian bistro. The cocktails were delicious. The food was okay. Im not sure if it was an off night but I was underwhelmed. I cant even remember what I ordered. At the same price Id rather go to Le Pigeon or Cocotte. But, I wouldnt totally write this place off - Id go for a couple of drinks with a girlfriend but I probably wouldnt go back for dinner unless it was on someone elses dime.

This place is fantastic. Amazing food, great staff, and a cozy vibe. Perfect for a romantic date night or a family dinner. I have been here with just the two of us, then with a group of 11, and we were met with flawless service and food regardless. The menu rotates, but has a few staples. No matter what you order, you will leave happy. Save room for dessert and order the Manhattan - one of the best in town.

We went in with very high expectations. Everything was good but not great. We liked the service. The wine selection was very good. The tomato soup was good. The Lyonaise salad was too acidic. The ox tail was very good. The duck meat was cooked nicely, but the skin was not crispy nor the fat properly rendered. We should have ordered the steak frites which everyone seems to rave about. Maybe one more try...

I took my 11 year old Daughter for her first French culinary experience. We sat at the Chefs counter and had the most memorable time. We shared the Bone Marrow, I had the Quail stuffed with Foie Gras and she had a take on the classic Onion Tarte. The Chef was gracious and engaged us often. Creative menu, impeccable service. Will return many times over Im sure.

A great happy hour for French foodies. I really enjoy the burger on the happy hour menu, too. However, my husband dislikes mustard, and was unable to find any condiments to substitute without some form of mustard or horseradish in it. Strange that there wouldnt be ketchup anywhere in the house. Otherwise, great service and a tasty menu.

Ive been here several times and really like this place. Beef tartar is my favorite. Staff is very nice and professional. They close at 11pm on Thursdays, and we had no clue about it until I asked at 12:00pm when they close. Very nice atmosphere and delicious food. Thanks guys, youre doing good job there. Sorry for keeping you late.

Its got a lovely ambiance and outdoor seating, but just not my kind of menu-- french-inspired richly flavored seafood, livers, snails, pork rind... The happy hour menu doesnt even make make me happy... Stick to the cocktail menu at a sidewalk table or people-watch from their big open windows.

Great high quality food, while expensive it is the kind of expensive I dont mind where you can tell that you are getting quality. Theyre atmosphere is nice (though a little crowded when we were there), and the wait between courses was timed perfectly.

Wine list too limited. Server was pompous and more interested in the chefs instructions than his customers enjoyment. We were on a date and thought this would be a good location. I suggest you find another restaurant for date night.

After reading excellent reviews we went there. Maybe we were unlucky and the chef wasn’t in it’s best day, but our food came too spicy, we only could taste pepper. I don’t know if we would give it another try.... probably not.

Inconsistent experience - everything from staff to food to ambiance has fluxuated on my 3 visits from best dinner in Portland to mediocre at best. Worth a try though to see if you get lucky. Oh, and sit in the bar.

I loved this place. Very unique restaurant with nice drinks and a fresh take on a menu. Upscale atmosphere without being pretentious. Plus they had Poutine! Real Poutine with duck and cheese curds!

Great atmosphere. We had the ox tail for an hors-doeuvre which was amazing. The main course was a bit disappointing. The muscles lacked a bit of taste and the pork t-bone was undercooked.

The chef knocked it out of the park with the oxtail Bourgignon. Sauce was silky and perfectly balanced between rich and wine-y. New treatment of cassoulet delicious and interesting.

Jacks Manhattan is a classic must-have. I wouldnt spend the money to buy dinner at St. Jacks though. Upscale atmosphere with mood lighting and courteous bartenders and wait staff.

The service was excellent as is the atmosphere. The best part of the meal for me was the cheese sampler plate ordered as an appetizer.

Now THIS is probably the best burger in Portland (sorry Stanichs). Not to mention everything else was delicious too!
