so we ordered our desserts to go and the cobbler was brought in the dish its served in. Both items wrapped in foil. I was like this is a real dish. The waiter says ya thats how the kitchen gave it. Then he left. My husband looks at Me and says Ill guess well have to bring it back. So we headed out and one the hosts guys at the front comes running after me " is that our dish? " i said yea it is. He says " thats stealing you cant take our dishes home" i said well thats how it was given to us, i even questioned it myself." He says " youre accusing one our staff of giving you a real dish to take home?" I said no but your accusing me of stealing when this is exactly how it came to me from the kitchen, where do you think i would have gotten the foil from?? Most people dont just carry a roll of foil in their purse!" He says " well there is no way our kitchen or waiter would have done this." I said ok then take it back and get me a paper plate. He comes back with it in a box well he hadnt put the box together He just handed it to me completely open. I asked him to put the box together so he partially did. My friend came back and helped me put it together. Oh i was mad. So rude. I also woke up this morning and puked my guts out. Not sure if it was from the fish and chips or what. All I had was that and a virgin pina colada.

Island Cafe is incredible. I went there for my birthday because theres nowhere else Id want to go. Amazing mixed drinks, ahi tuna soft tacos taste like heaven, the BEST salsa in Oregon (this is coming from a native Texan)... ...and all of this served to you under an umbrella on the Columbia River. It really couldnt get much better unless it stopped being legal -- and youd have that option open as well with your relative closeness to the metro area! I cant recommend this place enough. My biggest piece of advice? Check the peak times on Google before going. They get busy fast, so picking the right day and time will land you the best seat with no wait! And also, for those people wanting some privacy or have other life issues, Island Cafe has a gender neutral bathroom!! If you like American and seafood, or if you just like mixed drinks (have a driver, I got wasted on accident this last time! I only had two drinks!), give this place a try. You will not be disappointed!

I like the location a lot, by the water is awsome. The food was upper mediocre, browning lettuce served in the ahi tuna Salad, brown celery served with the deep fried wings, which I dont think were very good. Not much chicken on them. There was a lot of organisational problems when we arrived. We put our name of the waiting list and were told we could grab a drink from the bar while we waited and transfer to the table. When I got to the bar I was told we couldnt do that. So I paid at the bar. Then we sat in the bar waiting for a table. Approximately 20 mins later I asked the hostess if our table was ready and she said she gave it away to someone claiming to be us. Anyways we gave up on the dinner table and sat in the bar for the entire meal. Service was slow, and again disorganised, forgot drinks, dressings etc. I would come back in the hopes of giving this place 4 stars.

I live on the island and have eaten at the cafe often for last 6 yrs. Battered fish the best Ive ever had and its hard for me to order anything else (I really do try!). I bring new people here often and they agree! I eat out frequently and the cafes prices are very comparable with other restaurants of the same high quality. For those people complaining about slow service - get a life, were on island TIME & thats the point! The cafe atmosphere forces me to slow down and enjoy life. Guests interact with other guests, laughter always in the air and big smiles all around - its a consistently happy experience. And dont forget to pre-order the homemade key lime pie as they do sell out. This is a one of a kind experience in Portland / vancouver and I consider it THE SWEET SPOT of Hayden island. Dont miss it!!!!

Visited on a Monday night and the place was packed (a good sign). We had a short wait for a table, and there was plenty of bench seating to enjoy the view while we waited. Also, some free salt water taffy made it totally worth it. The outdoor seating has many umbrellas and coverings so its very pleasant to sit outside. Everything is clean and orderly and the service was prompt despite the crowd. The food was really good too! I had a bbq chicken bowl with brown rice which was great. My wife had the fish and chips which was even better. Then we had a key lime pie which was so good I think it ruined all other key lime pies for me. Definitely go check it out if your nearby Jazten beach.

My husband and I went an hour before they closed. There was a bit of a wait but it wasnt bad. Were from out of town and everyone we encountered ( wait staff and even other guests ) was so friendly and offered their recommendations. We got a bowl of clam chowder, the clam strips, the three piece halibut fish and chips, and the key lime pie, which my husband and I shared all of. They were out of fries and ice cream but we didnt mind. Every thing we ate was amazing and Im so glad we found this place! Great plate sizes with fair prices. The water side seating and beautiful view of the sunset was just an added bonus to a great meal!

Island Cafe is uniquely Portland. Shawn and Traci and have done a remarkable job with the 2013 rehab, expanding seating capacity and creating an atmosphere and facility that can take Island dining past the typical summer months in Portland. Going green with glass and dinnerware instead of plastic is certainly within the sustainable Portland footprint. Island Cafe has been one of our favorute summer go-to restaurants for years. With the remodel and expanded space and offerings, they haved ratcheted it up several notches and I am so very pleased to share their experience with non-Portlanders whenever I get the chance.

The setting here, on a summer day, deserves 6 stars. The food is 4 star, but getting to sit outside to eat on a floating pier while watching boats go by with Mt. Good in the distance makes it perfect. Years ago we could always walk right in and sit down but beware that it has been discovered and weve always encountered a wait list in the last 2 years. Since becoming this busy they always seem understaffed as well so service is slow but always friendly. So pack your patience and look forward to the best outdoor atmosphere in town!
