My husband is half Southern (Rome) Italian. His father, who emigrated to the USA after the 2nd World War, was a chef and passed his southern Italian cooking abilities on to his son. He fondly remembers that his parents owned two Italian Restaurants in the early 60s. My husband makes, and we can, his own spaghetti sauce and it is amazing. The sauce has to be amazing to make other amazing dishes like eggplant parmesean. My husband is an awesome cook and very picky about all food, but Italian food in particular. We were a bit hessitant to try Mangiare Italian Restaurant as we know what the real deal should taste like and everybody else is going to be cutting corners to save money. I ordered the Meat Ravioli and my husband ordered the Lasagna. He told me that if the Lasagna is "right" everything else should be pretty good. First of all, the portions were very small for the price. Anywhere in Portland those portions would have been much larger for the same price. We spent $30 on dinner. Soup and salad were seperate and not included in the dinner price. The Meat Ravioli was not the quality I am used to. There were about 6 raviolis in there and a little bit of sauce on top with a very small amount of parmesean. No other cheese at all. The sauce had a "bite" to it that Im not accustomed to in my husbands authentic cooking. His Lasangna was the worst he had ever tasted, but he said it is actually worse than lasagna he has tasted in the national chain italian restaurants. Lasagna is layered with Ricotta, other cheeses, and sauce in between the noodles. This piece of "Lasagna" from Mangiare had nothing in between a whole bunch of lasagna noodles with a few bits of chopped sausage pieces toward the bottom of it and a small amount of mozzerella cheese, which was the only cheese in it. He said it was very dry and lacked the basic cheese of Ricotta which that dish is known for. He said it was as cheap as it possibly could be. Needless to say, we will not be eating there again.

Normally this place is between okay to good. However, went there for Fathers Day today and had the Linguine Di Mare and a side of alfredo for dipping the breadsticks and I hate to say that I was extremely disappointed. Sadly, the alfredo sauce was very runny (like milk) and the Linguine Di Mare was bland. Regarding the alfredo, it was watery meaning that they did not cook it long enough to evaporate the water and thicken it. As for the entree, with a white wine sauce, Im supposed to be able to taste some acidity from the wine which I couldnt. The capers were supposed to add some saltiness, but it needed more. I had to sprinkle salt to make up for it. The dish also needed some sweetness and so some halved cherry tomatoes or sundried tomatoes would have helped balance the flavors (or lack thereof). Very disappointing, especially when the restaurant was not busy. The manager and/or the chef needs to be tasting their food periodically and to re-evaluate their recipes. Service was courteous and friendly. If the restaurant continues this low-quality food, its going to go out of business. Wont be back.

I really want to love their marinara, but its been really watery and tomato-y every time. The cheese ravioli are clouds, but the meat filled are tough and frequently undercooked. Im a huge fan of the buttery goodness that is the Alfredo sauce. Ive had the meat balls and sometime they are perfect, other time dry as stone. The fococia is traditional and fresh baked. The staff are fabulous. I just wish I had consistently prepared food.

Each time we go here we have had exceptional food. I like to try various dishes each time and have found none that I would order again. Having talked to the Chefs over the years, the same recipe, regardless of Chef, is followed. The only downside is that sometimes when they get real busy, and they do, it may take a little longer. We dont go there for a quick bit anyway so if it takes a few minutes longer - oh well.

We stumbled on this wonderful restaurant in improbably the adorable town of Independence this afternoon. In spite of a huge birthday party of at least 50, we were served promptly. The lunch special was only $7.50, including hot bread and a salad. My Sicilian pasta with chicken, peas and butternut squash in a rosemary sauce was excellent, while my wifes Pasta Amore was even better. What a find. Well be back.

Excellent Pasta plates. When in town, I always stop in, even if I have to take it to go. Comes with salad or soup and bread. I prefer the soup. A lunch special for $7.50. Really... must try, Mangiare! By the way, I am Italian and their sausage is the best I have had, anywhere outside, of my relatives homes.

Ho-hum. Okay service and food. I can do better at home myself, but maybe I didnt feel like cooking that night. Too bad the menu and wine list arent more adventurous, but if Im paying money for someone to cook for me I want to be impressed --- and to have something I couldnt do myself.

Casual dinning at its finest. Staff is friendly and attentive. Proportions are great, not too much and pasta is equal to protein and veggies. Amazing Italian food and kid friendly. I bring family and friends here every time they are in town. The best kept secret in these parts.

One of my preferred sit-down places in town. Good for a date night. Food is very good, affordable lunch specials, and I love Ravioli not. Maybe not as adventurous as the Three-Legged Dog, but a good home-cooked meal. Good wine selection. One of my standards.

2 very pleasant meals, great service, and we will definitely return. My husband loved his Tiramisu as dessert. I prefer a canoli with sweet almond ricotta filling, and theirs was different. ..not bad, but not a traditional roll up either. I cant wait to go back.

Every single time Ive been here over the past few years it has been fantastic. I like to try a new dish each time and have never been disappointed. Their salads are great too. I love to take friends and family here. Its always a delightful experience.

I love this small town restaurant. Everything I have been here the food has been delicious. My only complaint is I love the sausage alla pesto at lunch but can rarely leave work to eat at lunch time. Would love to see it on the dinner menu. Please!

Good food and good service with a very nice atmosphere. We had a large party and it would have been nice if a second waiter had been assigned to us but overall the experience was good and we will return.

Service is good. Food is fine. Good for a quick, weeknight "date" night (I.e., its Monday and I dont feel like cooking). Huge plus - only spot in town thats open for dinner on Mondays!

My daughter and I have had dinner at Mangiare many times. We have had excellent food every time. The spicy shrimp is one of our favorites.
