Poorly run business with mediocre food and atmosphere. Took my girlfriend here for dinner as it was her "favorite" Indian place in Portland. Food was middling but not spectacular and the ambiance was jarring due to pounding upstairs (at 7pm on a Friday?). Without what transpired next I would have given Tandoor 3 stars. My check was mistakenly swapped with the table next to mine and I was under charged. No biggie. I pointed it out and it was remedied but I asked for extra receipts just in case, tipped 20% and left. After checking my bank statement 5 days later I noticed there was two charges from Tandoor where there should have been only one. The incorrect charge and credit were there, so that was all set. Problem was the initial charge for my bill was still there as well as the charge for bill + tip. I contacted the restaurant and spoke with our server who also happened to be the manager. He said he was sorry, and would look into it and call me back either way. No call back. Charges still there a few days later. Multiple attempted calls, voice messages, and even a trip a down to Tandoor with bank statements and receipts in hand led to no resolution. My bank is reversing the charges for me. Ill have to make a special trip down to the bank to get the fraud forms notarized further inconveniencing me for a mediocre meal. What a pain. Even if this had been the best Indian food Id ever had this type of terrible business practice would warrant never giving them another dollar of my money. Plenty of other choices in town. Skip Tandoor.

My review is solely on the visit to the front door. This is because we were turned away at 9 PM saying that they do only take away at this hour of the day (since they close at 9:30). Now, I am not going to question an establishments policies about timing. However, I will question it when the Google listing says it is open till 10 PM. Upon politely telling the young kid (staff) that they should look into the timings on Google and ensure that it gets fixed to avoid losing more customers, he openly showed that he didnt care and said "it is not my problem what is written on Google". When we said that he may not care, but the owner of the establishment might, he says that the owner (a lady apparently) doesnt care about this either (which kind of translated to that she doesnt care about losing customers). I dont know how many people give any heed to these reviews and have no idea if the owner ever reads this. But, this is my experience just at the front door (yes, the guy didnt even let us in).

For years I had wanted to try Tandoor (when I was in high school, it was where all the hip students went to eat), and I finally had my chance. I have to admit, it wasn’t as impressive as I had hoped. Yes, the location is superb, and the interior is both comfortable and authentic feeling. The service was relatively unmemorable, however. I had the “Dal Makhani” and it was absolutely DELICIOUS. But the menu was stereotypical of most other Indian restaurants in Maine and the portions were extremely, extremely small (especially for dinner) and extremely, extremely expensive in relation to the portion-size. I feel the same way about this place as I do it’s sister restaurant in Brunswick – was it good? Sure. Was it the best in the state of Maine? No. Would I come here again? Sure. Would I drive out of my way for it? No.

I am originally from the NYC area and have eaten in many Indian restaurants in my lifetime - some bad, some so so, some incredibly delicious. I am now searching for one in the Portland area. This restaurant is better than Hi Bombay where every dish tasted just like every other dish. (Indian cuisine is honestly my favorite because of the wealth of flavors in any bite.) The service was fast since I am certain everything (even nan) was reheated and probably originally cooked the day before or more. Any frozen Indian food in any supermarket is better than the food served here.

We have been going to Tandoor for well over a decade and continue to love the food, the welcoming service, and the family who runs the restaurant who are always gracious and kind. The food is consistently delicious - aromatic, spicy, comforting - it is our home-away-from-home place to eat even with all the other wonderful options in Portland. The youngest member of our family said, "You should really give it 6 stars. 6 out of 5!" We recommend it highly.

Breads were good. Service was GREAT! Unfortunately everything else BAD. The curries were all bad-no taste. Biryani was ridiculous hodgepodge of stuff. Thali was a joke. I gave the 3 stars mostly for their service. There was only one person managing the front of the house but still managed to do it well all with a smile. Unfortunately not enough for me to come back here to eat food though.

Im a South African Indian guy who grew up eating curry and rice, been in the states for 2 years and havent found a place that quite hit the spot like tandoor restaurant. It brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye because It reminded me of home so much. Definitely a must check out place. Broad menu for an aromatic authentic Indian experience as you enter the door. Big ups

Delicious dining, smooth service! Highly recommend the in-house experience, though even takeout is well worth it! Naan is perfection. Entrees are difficult to a choose from, as theyre all spectacular! Though, Ive been leaning towards chicken tikka marsala and lamb curry lately. Thank you!

Great restaurant. The service was excellent. Very friendly staff. The lamb was tender. Warning: this is not your normal spice. The vindaloo nearly melted my face off. I loved it! My wife said the medium spicy kabob was just the right amount of hot.

Ordered chicken kadai and tandoori shrimp masala ... Both the curries tasted same.... The fourteen dollar dish of shrimp curry had only five piece of shrimp in it ... Taste of both the curries was horrible ...

Ive had Indian food at some at some of the top places in New York City and London, and Tandoor ranks among the best. Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan and a cup of Masala Tea, you cant go wrong!

This restaurant is right across the street from my office, so I eat there frequently. They have some of the best Indian food Ive eaten anywhere. And theyre nice people too.
