So this is the first time I have ever left a negative review, and hopefully my last. My friend and I came here tonight and ordered the General Tao chicken. The waiter asked if we wanted white or dark meat, and we both went with white. (Weve never been asked this here.) He was attentive and friendly at first. We enjoyed our food, and when we received our bill we noticed we were charged more than what was listed in the menu. I thought I was charged for dinner plus the extras (if you paid a little more you got a soup and spring roll.) However, the waiter said it was because we got the white meat. (what...?). Firstly, the option for different meat wasnt listed, let alone the fact that it would be extra. The waiter also did not communicate that it would be extra. We kindly asked to just be charged the price that was listed in the menu, considering we were unaware of the extra charge and it was not communicated whatsoever. The waiter would not do it, and so we asked to speak to a manager, because it felt like we were being taken advantage of. At first the manager yelled from across the room "YOU HAVE TO PAY". We had to ask him to actually approach our table. (There was no one else in the restaurant). Not only was there no apology for the lack of transparency, but he began to yell and treat us like dirt. He failed to see why we were upset, and we continued to communicate that we were being ripped off. He eventually agreed to knock off two dollars, but only on one of our bills... I cant say Ive ever had an issue like this with an establishment, and I couldnt fathom the fact that it happened, that I was shaking and almost in tears. We werent as upset about being overcharged as we were about being disrespected and ripped off by a manager of a restaurant. Me, and many others who are now aware of the situation will never return, so he will be losing far more money in the long run. Considering he doesnt seem to care what his customers think, I doubt he reads these reviews. But if he does, I hope he learns to not only be 100% transparent with what they are charging people, but learns to be respectful and actually care about people who comes to his business. For those that will still eat at China Cottage, make sure they do not take advantage of you. I felt like the majority of people would be even more furious than we were and would storm out. Hopefully they havent been doing this to far more people, but Im not so optimistic.

Ive been going to China Cottage for a couple of years now. We drive up from Liberty Township which is about a half hour drive. Needless to say Ive spent quit a bit of money there. Ive always enjoyed their food. We traveled north today to hit China Cottage for lunch. I ordered my usual Broccoli and Chicken, Fried Rice, Egg Drop Soup and two Spring Rolls. I noticed the rice wasnt the same when the waitress brought out my meal, but didnt say anything about it. When we received our check there was a two dollar upcharge for Brown Rice. When we brought it to the waitresses attention she said she had to talk to the manager. Kim, the manager, came over and told us that there is a $2 upcharge for Brown Rice. We told him I ordered Fried Rice. He would not take the charge off our bill. We said we would not be returning and he simply said "then dont come back". This guy obviously has no business experience. For $2 he lost a customer that dined at his restaurant on a consistent basis and spends a lot of money there. I want the owner of the business to know what kind of a person they have entrusted to manage their business. Kim obviously doesnt care if he loses business because it isnt coming out of his pocket. Follow Up: Ive tried to contact the owner on two different occasions and have not received a return call. The manager I gave my contact information to seemed surprised the owner didnt return my call after she sent him a text on two different occasions. Perhaps customer service isnt important to the owner or this establishment.

Never thought I would be writing a bad review at china cottage but the way I was treated today was appalling and upset me to the point of having to write this review. A friend and I went to grab lunch there as we do at least once a week, even tho we have seen this manager go crazy and cuss at others we never thought it would be us one day... We simply had a 2 dollar discrepancy on our bill for Brown rice instead of the fried rice we had ordered, I tried to talk to server who said she thought he said Brown rice but she would have to ask manager. Well, the manager ran to our table and before I could even open my mouth he was telling me my friend had ordered Brown rice and he would be charged. I said he ordered fried rice but ate the brown rice he received so we wouldnt have to wait any longer. I also tried to explain to him that we had several upcharges for other items and that we have no problem paying for what we order but I would not pay for something I did not request. With him talking over me saying something about 2 against 1, meaning us against the server, I simply said I had nothing against the server, we have been coming here once a week for over a year..and before I could fully explain this so called MANAGER said dont come back then.. WOW! Lucky he works for family because I would fire that hot head. Found this information out when I called corporate. Well, China Cottage Manager, You made my lunch very humiliating and embarrassing ! #WONTBEBACKEVER

I ordered take out and when I got home to open it all up, almost everything about the 2 dinners I ordered were wrong and items were missing. Sweet and sour chicken and General Tso.. 2 most popular chinese meals. Easy, right? I called and spoke to the manager and he argued about what I ordered and said that "the restaurant couldnt do a side of broccoli and carrots in the brown sauce".. my question is, why not? You have the ingredients, act like a restaurant and figure it out! When I placed the order and asked for a side to be made as such, he made it clear of how I wanted it, therefore informing me it could be done. So simple.. Secondly, why on EARTH would you EVER argue and correct the customer? He told me to bring the food back and I could get refunded.. WHY didnt he try to correct the order and rectify the situation and give me what I want instead of upsetting me and making my experience there awful?? So when the food was taken back to the store, he even had the audacity to CHECK the order and make sure all of the food was brought back and returned. No apologies were given, nothing. Not even a word was spoken out of his mouth. Even one of the fortune cookies had mold on it. I am appalled with this service and who ever the manager is there, should be terminated. I work in this industry and I have NEVER received such treatment from any place.
