My wife, friends and I have gone to just about every sushi place weve seen in Columbus. Akai Hana is, by far, the best. We go here about 2-3 times a month, and have been doing so for years. When we take people out for sushi, this is where we go. We highly recommend the spicy scallop, dynamite, buckeye, and dragonfly rolls. Honestly though, we havent had a bad one here. Even though we almost always do sushi here, their Korean food is quite good, too. My wife is Korean, so weve tried a lot of the Korean restaurants in Columbus. The Korean dishes are excellent, though the side dishes you would get in a typical Korean restaurant are very limited. So, great main dish, but doesnt feel like a Korean restaurant. Because of the mix of Korean/Japanese foods, you can bring non-sushi people here. You can get their sushi, they can get bulgogi (Korean barbacue). If youre a meat eater and havent tried this, you havent lived. Somehow, my brother hadnt had Korean BBQ during the 17 years Ive been with my wife. When he finally tried it, he just stopped and went, Oh my...thats ridiculously good! The decor is also quite nice. Not overly plush, but comfortable seating with a clean, creative, and modern look. I enjoy it quite a bit. The only time I ever had a complaint about service, (it was a new server, who didnt last long) the management was extremely gracious about the whole incident. I wasnt even upset, I just wanted to let the manager know. The only down side to this restaurant is its busy. Getting in, and waiting for food to come out can be a problem. Of course, that just backs up my opinion of it.

Highly disappointing experience. I have an allergy to salmon. I went to Akai and decided to order a dinner box that had sushi. I asked what kind of sushi was in the box and salmon was one of the pieces. I explained my allergy to the waitress and asked if I could switch the one piece with something else. She said yes as long as it was less than or equal to the cost of salmon. After a while, the waitress came back and told me that management wouldnt allow any changes to the box even for an allergy. I went to Akai because I wanted sushi. The specialty rolls either had salmon in them or a fish that I didnt want to eat. Eventually the manager came over to "help". She said that if they allowed me to switch out the one piece of fish they would have to allow other to make changes as well. They are to busy for custom order. (I was there at 8:30 pm on a Thursday night. There was only 20 people in the restaurant.) Then she tried to off options of what to order but they were all non-sushi choices. I explained that I came in for sushi. She was pushy and became frustrated. Then she just walked away. The waitress returned a little while later. I told her that Im just going to leave because there wasnt anything I wanted to eat and due to the horrible treatment from management. If you have any allergy this is not they place for you! Prior to this experience I have never had an issue with a restaurant accommodating my allergy.

I, and three of my colleagues have been to Akai Hana around a dozen times over the past six months. We have no hesitation in rating this the best sushi place around Columbus. The fish has always been fresh and tasty. We have never had a SINGLE piece of bad fish at Akai Hana! Their tempura (ANY tempura) is TO DIE FOR! We love their spider roll, shrimp tempura roll, king crab roll and almost anything that they have! Being a spicy tuna fan, I really love the way they make it with tuna chunks and not the chopped up tuna. Just this last time, we got the chopped up spicy tuna, and we promptly reinforced our preference for the chunky spicy tuna in our next round order. They usually have Chu-Toro, and depending on the season, O-Toro (which is the pricier one I think). So whatever the pricier Toro is, it is to die for here... recently, we have discovered that the Yellow Tail Sushi is absolutely fabulous (in the words of one of my foodie buddies, "ridiculous")! At half the price of a Toro sushi, this will blow you away and taste very similar to Toro. The waitstaff are wonderful, and do a good job of explaining the menu (which is half-Japanese!).

I would have to honestly say that I have eaten at this restaurant at least 100 times. Having moved here from the Miami Metro area, I was concerned about my culinary options, or lack there of. My main concern was finding a decent sushi restaurant, because I literally LIVE FOR SUSHI. Luckily, we moved into an apartment only a 5-minute walk from this restaurant and decided to finally check it out. I fell in love instantly and have been a regular at this restaurant ever since. The food is delicious and the service is great. I can without a doubt say that Akai Hana is the best Japanese/Korean restaurant I have been to and my overall favorite restaurant. Some of my favorites here are the dynamite roll with soft shelled crab, the honey roll, the red dragon roll, and the rainbow roll. I have also got the tempura udon and the stone bibimbap. If you like spicy seafood try the spicy squid. Also, if you come with a large party order a party boat!! They are fun and beautifully presented. Im getting hungry just writing this. You truly wont regret it.

Akai Hana was recommended to me, by several people. My wife and I went and tried this place out the other night, and nothing else to say but amazing. The Sushi: Very good! The fish is very fresh, and the rolls are extremely tender. We also tried the Wagyu (Raw Kobe Beef) Sushi, which was extremely delicious. The Food: Being our first time trying authentic Japanese Cuisine it took us some time to order, but we were pleasantly surprised with the food. My wife had a seafood dish, that had all kinds of seafood in it. All of it was cooked extremely well, and had an amazingly delicious pork broth. I had a Beef and Tofu dish, that was out of this world. The vegetables were all cooked perfectly, and the sauces/broths were great, without being overpowering. I would recommend this place to anyone looking fro amazing Sushi or Japanese cuisine.

Best sushi place in Columbus, period! I have gone to 6-7 sushi restaurants in central Ohio and this is the real deal. I always sit at the bar and the chefs are always friendly and will talk to you, sometimes offer you little treat and answer questions since Im always curious. The prices of food are low compare some of the crap at Short North and Grandview, the overpriced wannabes. I mean if you want to go to a down to earth sushi bar and have authentic sushi this is the place, if you want to pay for the decorations and the interior designs of a restaurant then Haiku and others will be better fit. And by no means Akai Hana is run down or anything it is cozy and feel like a real place you would go when you are in Japan, I know cause I went there, Osaka.
