I go to Ichiban once ever other month or so; my first visit was sometime in 2009 or 2010. Its not the biggest restaurant as it occupies an unit in Thruways strip mall so I dont recommend parties larger 5ish people. Most of the tables are small 2-4 seaters with a few larger tables. Most of the cooking and all of the sushi preparation is visible, but its not one of the places where you sit around a large griddle while a chef cooks and entertains. The food is very reasonably priced and there is a decent Japanese alcohol menu. Be careful though, two people can easily wrack up a large bill if they both get sushi, an entree, some apps and alcohol. The sake is decent, not top shelf, but definitely not bottom shelf. Ichiban makes the best tempura vegetables in the area, full stop. The batter is perfectly crunchy every time and the vegetables are cooked, but not soft or soggy. I cant get enough of them. Their sushi is nothing to laugh at either. Very good quality with a variety of options. Id definitely recommend Ichiban if youve never had sushi before. The noodles are my absolute favorite. Theres nothing like their Udon on a cold night, a warm night, a sunny day, a rainy day...pretty much anytime is good. Every soup Ive ever had has been well-balanced and perfectly seasoned. I read a review that said Miso was salty. Ive never had salty food from Ichiban. In fact, unlike some panasian restaurants, Ichiban doesnt have the greasy residue some of us love from chinese/japanese restaurants. In short, if you like Japanese (American) food give Ichiban a try. You wont regret it.

I have been going to this restaurant for over 10 years, and I have always had great experiences with the food and the waitstaff. The sushi is always fresh, and there is a large variety of authentic recipes available. They have expanded the menu over the years to include excellent yakisoba and udon in addition to their staple teriyaki, hibachi, and sushi menus, and their prices are very affordable for lunch or a family dinner. The portions for the hot dishes are very large and will easily feed someone with an average appetite for dinner and lunch the next day. There are a number of dishes that will appeal to your meat-and-potatoes friends and family (butter salmon, teriyaki steak) as well as your healthy eaters (salad with carrot-ginger dressing, edamame, vegetable yakisoba), which is great because I have both! The manager and his family are very nice people, and this shows in the waitstaff here. In my experience, the waiters are friendly, quick, and personable, and a lot more than the typical "My name is ___, and Ill be your server today" restaurant experience. They are also good to ask for recommendations if you are new to sushi or the restaurant. Ichiban is also great for large parties, and they do take reservations and will have your table ready on time. This is just an overall wonderful restaurant, and Im looking forward to going there the next time Im in town!

I have been a sushi eater for over 15 years. I have worked at two of the busiest seafood/sushi restaurants in Atlanta, Ga., so I know good sushi. The first time I dined at Ichiban, I did not enjoy my sushi. It did not taste fresh but my dining partner really liked it, so I decided to give it another try. I was sick before I could leave the restaurant and have been ill for hours. I suggest you keep looking if you are searching for fresh sushi in Winston Salem.

This was the most horrible Japanese meal I have ever had. The chicken was not cooked, shrimp sauce was not given with the meal, the steak was unseasoned and tough, the salad was drenched with unseasoned ginger dressing that tasted funny and the side of veggies was filled with boiled cabbage, not the normal sauteed broccoli, mushrooms and carrots. There is a reason it is cheap!

If you like Japanese food, give this place a try. Me and some friends randomly stopped by one evening to get some good food and its become a tradition to eat at this restaurant each time were nearby. The soups are great. The food is amazing. The sushi is delicious. The feel is relaxed, and its great place to eat at to wind down, or eat at with friends.

I have never had miso soup that tasted so bad I literally couldnt eat it. Hibachi shrimp was tough, veggies were almost solely cabbage with a single broccoli floret and a carrot stick. This was the worst Japanese food Ive ever had and I have been to a lot of them!

I am sitting here right now and my order is wrong there is a Bone in my chicken and the last straw...a hair in my food. The WORST japanese experience I have ever had. Will not be back. Me and my fiancé deserve better than the food served here right now.

Tasty and delicious with quick friendly service! The Gyoza is the best here! You must try their jello dessert. Where I am from we call it almond float. Superb place and will definitely be returning next time Im in town!

My favorite Japanese restaurant. The staff and owners all know my name and what I usually order. Food is great every time. Im not a sushi lover but the sushi bar is always busy. Very fast service for busy lunch time.

Ichiban has excellent service and amazing food. The authenticity of the dishes and great service make it good value. Only complaint is that the inside can feel a little cramped.

Ichiban is my favorite restaurant. I am addicted to their shrimp yaki soba noodles, their salad dressing, and their yum yum roll. Try it and you will be back for more!

Ordered dinner to take home. Only place in the city you have to ask for sauce with your to go order. Live on the other side of the city. Ruined our dinner. Thanks a lot.

Dont waste you time. Udon bowl is just a giant bowl of miso soup with wanna be udon noodles, cabbage, and overly boiled flavorless chicken

The jalapenos were from a can..and the wasabi was like green cream cheese icing, it looked and tasted weird. This was a to go order.
