My wife and I ate here for the first time, and were quite impressed. As we are both avid cooks, and pretty good at it, we are rarely impressed by the food at most restaurants we eat at. This one is great. The price range is about the same as the prices at the chain-steakhouse type restaurants, but the food is much better here. I have eaten food at "fine dining" restaurants that was nowhere near the quality of the food here. Fills the niche of casual restaurant with great food perfectly. The complimentary port wine cheese spread served with crackers when you are first seated is very good, and quite unique. The appetizers are all great, and come in prolific quantities, with a variety of good dipping sauces. The bacon/cheese stuffed potato skins are particularly good. The salads were good, not overloaded with gunk, and the house-made toasted sesame vinegarette that I had with mine was great. I had the wood grilled sirloin/shrimp skewer entree, and was very impressed. The steak came cooked exactly like I ordered it, (on the rare side of medium-rare,) which doesnt happen often at most restaurants. It is rare to find a restaurant steak that isnt overseasoned/marinated to the point that you can no longer taste the steak itself, but this one was seasoned perfectly, with the wood-grilled flavor of the beef coming through perfectly. This sirloin was better than the ribeye or filet at most places Ive eaten. The shrimp were not overcooked and rubbery, which is also rare to find in a restaurant. They were cooked exactly right. I was not a big fan of the Bernaise sauce, but it was not bad, and I am no fan of egg/mayo based sauces to begin with. My wife ordered the grilled Moonshine chicken, and it was also tender and perfectly cooked, with a good flavor. The sides were also good, incuding one of the few really good baked potatoes I have ever eaten in a restaurant setting. The sevice was excellent. The waitress was friendly, very knowledgeable about the menu, sauces, drinks, etc. She didnt hover, but we never ran out of anything, never had our drinks run dry, nor did we ever have to call here to the table. The food arrived promptly, and in the right sequence-we had just enough time to eat our appetizers when the salads arrived, and just enough time to polish off the salad when the entrees came. I cant review the desserts, because after appetizers, salad, and the generous entree, I was too stuffed to think about dessert. Overall, this is a great place to eat, and we will definitely be back.

I really want to give this place 5 stars, but there was an issue with my food so I cant. First Ill say that my family and I come to Maggie Valley once or twice a year and we have been doing that for almost 10 years. The past couple of trips we were told that we needed to try Moonshine grill. The locals and other travelers both told the same story. The menu and the staff are great. My family enjoyed their meal and Im sure mine was just an anomaly. I think that mostly because of the reviews and what we have been told. Much like your favorite restaurant, eventually something isnt going to be that good and you just let it go. I liked this place so much, I am letting my first meal go. Im one of those weird rational people that understands crap happens. No need for an all caps angry review you see occasionally. The meal starts out with special kind of cheese with crackers. This is as odd as it is good. I believe our waiter was Parker and in my 36 years on this earth I have never had a nicer waiter. We interacted with several members of the staff and they were just great. Where I am from, a restaurant in a hotel/motel is not a good sign. Either its going to be very fancy or crappy, neither of which suit me. This is neither. This is right there in that sweet spot. This is a place you should try.

Outstanding dining experience despite luncheonette style tables. Early bird choices were varied and both our entrees came from this menu...prime rib was prepared as requested...penne pasta with white cream sauce, sundried tomatoes and spices (I added shrimp) was delicious. Homemade sesame seed vinagrette dressing on salad was very good as were my husbands glazed carrots - not too sweet and cooked just right. The service by Evette was professional, attentive & friendly. She answered our questions and made us feel welcome. A spontaneous dinner out on a rainy evening turned into a real surprise and a delight.

Arrive about 20 minutes before closing time and they cheerfully seated me. The food was really good. They start you out with a drink and a cheese plate with crackers. It was very different, but awesome. Kathryn was my waitress and did a great job. Had the chicken sandwich with fries. For dessert, I had the creme brûlée with cherries. It sounded good and definitely had the ingredients to be awesome. However, the top was burned a little too much and had a bitter taste to it. Overall, good experience.

WE WENT TO EAT THERE ON RECOMMENDATIONS FROM A FRIEND STATED THEIR FOOD WAS UNBELIEVABLE AND IT WAS UNBELIEVABLY BAD. BEST THING THEY SERVED US AS THE CHEESE AND CRACKERS PRIOR TO ORDERING. I HAVE NEVER TASTED MEATLOAF SO BAD IN MY LIFE. AND THE FISH WAS GREASY. THE WAITRESS WASNT VERY FRIENDLY AT ALL EITHER LIKE SHE DIDNT WANT TO BE THERE. THE GENTLEMAN THAT GREETED US WAS EXCELLENT AND WAS OR AT LEAST ACTED LIKE HE WAS GLAD WE CAME. THE PLACE WAS NOT CROWDED AT ALL AND NOW I CAN SEE WHY.

We were looking for someplace to host our rehearsal dinner that wasnt going to break our bank. Not only did Moonshine Grill give me one of the best prices in town, but on top of that, they have a super cute banquet room that we rented. Lydia was amazing! She had the room nicely decorated for us beforehand. Chef Rick was also great! The food was fantastic. I would highly recommend Moonshine Grill!

Half of the ribeye I ordered was cooked to medium (as requested) and the other half was rare. This is not a place I would trust sending it back to the kitchen so I ate the half I could and informed our waitress. Manager did discount my bill but only a small fraction of the cost of the steak. One star for the free jukebox.
