Japanese cuisine and sushi are synonymous in the imagination of the American public. As such, Japanese restaurants that don’t serve sushi are easy to overlook. However, Don convincingly makes the case that there’s more to savor than sashimi and specialty rolls. Food at Don comes in a few different categories. In addition to the familiar ramen, there’s ishiyaki (sizzling rice bowls), yakisoba (thin fried noodles) and udon (thicker noodles in a stir fry or soup), each with different combinations of toppings. I’ve had the best luck with the ishiyaki, my favorites being shrimp, red snapper and katsu pork. Each is served sizzling hot, meaning you’ll have to do some stirring if you don’t want anything to burn. A selection of optional sauces allows you to season each dish to your liking and the complimentary miso is flavorful and not too salty. Other dishes are hit-and-miss. Steamed gyoza are decent, but you can get better down the street. The chicken yakisoba is satisfactorily crunchy and has a good balance of flavors, though the serving size is small. Shoyu (soy) ramen was salty but otherwise bland. Don’s interior is comfortable, modern and clean. Colorful paper lamps and decorative Japanese wall accent an otherwise dark space. There’s bar seating, though you shouldn’t have any problem getting a table here. Don is rarely ever crowded and service doesn’t lag. Prices at Don are very reasonable. All entrees run under $10 and appetizers are generally in the $3 to $6 range. You can easily get a filling meal here without breaking the bank. Don is no Sushi Republic – neither the caliber of cuisine nor the expense are comparable – but it’s a great option for diners who don’t need an expansive menu to enjoy a satisfying meal.

We went here just the other evening. Their online info said they closed at 10:30. When we walked in the place was dead, when we asked if they were still open, a woman said no they had closed early due to slow business that night. I am a very reasonable person and was perfectly fine with this. I said have a good night, and we walked out. She came out and said she was sorry and that she would still serve us. She fired back up the grill and cooked us food. Not only was the food amazing as always, but I was just blown away at her utmost kindness and politeness to us. I have been here several times, and the service is always golden, but tonight it was platinum!!! I highly recommend the food for any Japanese/Korean food fan, and if you are looking for a small place with great food and out of this world service, Don has that too!!! I never leave reviews, but this place/experience I felt deserved one!!! Love Don on Tate Street!!!

Excellent food, decent service. My wife and I ate here for the first time today and found that it tasted very similar to the food we had during our recent trip to Japan. My wife loved her beef ishiyaki and I really enjoyed my chilie raman. The sakura tea was also very nice. The price was low for the quality and the atmosphere was relaxing. Hopefully well be eating here again very soon.

Went here with family, was a bit skeptical when walking in but after my first bite of the Chicken Don, I was sold. Cozy little spot that you wouldnt expect to be as good as it is. Food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Im not sure if hes the owner or not, but the worker with the cowboy hat (hes worn it every time weve been there) is rather personable and attentive.

The food was delicious! I ordered the bulgogi beef. I asked for extra mushrooms but they gave me extra meat instead, which was ok because it wouldnt have been enough meat if it was a regular order. Our original server was friendly, but there was a shift change during our meal and the next one wasnt as friendly. Overall a good experience. Great atmosphere!

The food here was unbelievably good, and Ill definitely be returning. Great vegetarian options and extremely trendy, cute atmosphere and decor. The service was a little strange, though; we were the only people in the restaurant for the majority of our meal, but it took a really long time for us to order, get drink refills, etc.

This place is phenomenal! The service is outstanding and the owners are absolutely a delight. I go here quite a bit and the owners recognize me a bit now. The food is really good for the price youre paying. Overall one of my favorite places to eat near campus. Definitely recommend to everyone.

Forty minutes after ordering they told us they mixed up our order. Took another fifteen minutes before they fixed it. The waiter never refilled our drinks. Still paid full price for the meal, keep in mind this was a Monday afternoon. That being said the food was very good.

Tiny place right off the UNCG campus. Efficient service from the older lady and gentleman that I assume also own the joint. Weve always had good food there. Usually get one of the hot pots with rice. Not fancy, but good food, service and its convenient for music camp!

Ishiyaki bowls are really good, especially the unagi. The only thing that I would complain about is that theres not enough meat in the ishiyaki bowls. Service is great, atmosphere is interesting. Small restaurant but it usually doesnt take long to get seated and served.

Pretty darn good! Lovely welcome and good food. Service was a bit slow, but thats probably because of the ice storm that had just come through. Not a fan of the agedashi tofu: the sauce was too sweet and syrupy. Steak Don and Tuna Tataki were great, as was miso ramen.

This place doesnt look like itd be that nice from the outside but it is nice trendy looking on the inside. My boyfriend got the spicy ramen and I got the miso ramen. We added a little soy sauce and it was delicious ! The fried dumplings were also good.

This is my favorite place to go for rice bowls. Very good rice bowls. My favorite is the teriyaki chicken! The spring rolls are also delicious with the sauce that it is served with and also the table hot sauce.

Truly one of the greatest hidden gems in GSO dining. Asian fusion with a personal touch. Always amazing. Quality is outstanding. Easy to overlook from the outside, but if you havent been, you are missing out!

If you love rice then this is the place for you! Such nice people and great service. However the rice bowls have 2 oz of meat to 2 cups of rice. No real vegetables to speak of, I wasnt impressed.

I went to school at UNCG, it was my favorite place to eat. Now I live in Durham, but on occasion I come to Greensboro. And of all good places to eat near campus, I usually go here. Great food!

The soups are tasteless, the salads are terrible, the waiters do no know the menu at all,and it had a bad atmosphere. I had to send some of the food back because it was so tasteless and bad.

I had a wonderful experience. I ordered carryout and was given a scoop of ice cream while I waited. My food was ready in 5 minutes! I got teriyaki chicken and rice and it was delicious!
