I have never been so dissatisfied with a restaurant experience in my life. I have been to many sushi Restaurants in this town, Plum House, California Rollin, Tokyo, Jasmines, Piranha and can say that all of these establishments will provide you with equal or greater sushi experience. Hell wegmans take-away is better. While not all of the above attempt to be authentic Japanese, the food is of better quality and taste. Shiki attempts to be authentic Japanese but it is not, the sushi is amateurish and the portions are a disgrace. If you want an authentic Japanese experience, go to the restaurant, Tokyo, in Henrietta it is leaps and bounds beyond shiki. The prices here are insulting too. We ordered the edamame appetizer ($4.75) and the amount of edamame we received was approximately 15 soy beans. What are they nuts?? The soba noodles were disappointing and lacked any flavor, and again the sushi was very disappointing and uninspired. The worst part of the night was the service. Incredibly inattentive and downright rude at times. We were stared at during our whole meal, in a way that made a member in my party feel incredibly uncomfortable. We were never asked about the quality of the meal, had our drinks refilled, or given any sort of pleasant experience. Its hard to describe but she was very rude. I have never once, in my 24 years on this earth ever not tipped a server, but for the first time, I felt compelled to, and so I did. As we were walking out the restaurant we were accosted by the (presumably) owner on behalf of our waitress saying that we left no tip, she accused us of being rude, not a "was there something wrong with your meal or service." When we told her, verbatim, "That we usually do leave tips, in fact good tips, often over 20 percent, and that our service was terrible and food mediocre" She accused us of being rude because we were there late and kept everyone in the restaurant. We arrived at 9:10 on a night they closed at 10:00 and stayed in the establishment until approximately 10:05. Worst Restaurant experience ever. Never again will I set foot in this establishment again. It was shameful.

Having lived in Japan for three years prior coming to the states, I was expecting some traditional Japanese cuisines (not just sushi!). When we entered this restaurant, I was surprised to see the cheap interiors which included dirty paper lantern, and poor heating. I ordered shrimp and veg. tempura and fried tofu. Well, since I was hungry, I could eat it. The main complaint is neither the interior nor the food. Its about the philosophy upon which the owner wants to build the reputation. If you would want to stick to this quality of food, lower your price to the Chinese restaurants level. Otherwise, spend some money to improve the quality of the place, and food.

This is my favorite sushi place. There are plenty of tasty dishes and appetizers for non fish lovers too. The atmosphere is bright and airy, though the space is small and intimate. The number of Japanese students who eat here give an indication of how authentic the food is. The fish is always fresh and delicious. The house saki, served hot, is the best in the area and affordable. One note, the actual sushi rolls are not the most exciting in town, but all the other dishes more than offset that. I suggest getting a few appetizers to share and some separate sushi to try. Excellent for an adventurous date or fun with a small group.

Truly horrendous. Went out for family meal on a Friday night. Served our 3 year old us severely undercooked chicken. After we sent it back, they came back one minute later and had microwaved it and it was still undercooked. Then she came to the table and tried to charge us for it! Never once apologized!WAITRESS HAD A HORRIBLE ATTITUDE! Acted like our family dining there in a Friday night was an inconvience. Very rude. Ginger was dry, avocado in roll was not fresh. Poor ambiance. I have been in Rochester for 6 years and have not had an experience like this. Never going here again and would NOT recommend.

I went there because I like sushi. One star is not for the food. The server is super rude. I ordered dinner for myself and my friend ordered a roll because she was not that hungry. When I was paying, the server was complaining that it is not good to order only roll. Also saying that we shouldve order dinners(I did order a dinner indeed). What the heck, man?? We will order whatever we want to eat. Its really feeling bad that I have to tolerate these unnecessary behavior from the server. We are paying for our food, so let us decide what we will eat.

This place has fantastic Japanese food, probably the highest quality Ive had in the Rochester area. Half my party got sushi dinners that were absolutely delicious, and the other half ordered the ramen, which was amazing (and the broth wasnt too salty!!) We ordered ice cream for desert and it tasted homemade (although we didnt ask if it was). Service was excellent, and it should be noted that the seating area is quite small so I would highly recommend making reservations. We went on a Wednesday night and it was packed.

I dont know what angered some recent posters but this place is excellent. Having lived in Japan "on the economy" rather than in an American enclave I can vouch for the authenticity and quality. Ive been there when the restaurant was full and the service was fine. I have no idea what people expect in this modestly priced eatery. All the Japanese natives I know here in town also think this place is a little gem. (As an alternative to sushi, try the vegetable tempura lunch some time -- its terrific!)

Worst customer service ever. There is an old lady that is a host, but since it was our unlucky day, she was also our server. When asked for our order, she only waited a second or so for us to respond before she darted to another table to take their order. Then when we were paying our bill, she had the nerve to beg us for a tip. Never ever go there. Osaka sushi has better sushi for the value. Wegmans has better tasting sushi. And Furoshiki had better tasting ramen.

I am not a expert on Japanese food by any means, but I really enjoyed my meal at Shiki. My girlfriend and I both had Ramen and some Sake, which was very good. I am confident the meal was authentic, and as all the other patrons in the restaurant were Oriental in ancestry, I feel that this assumption is merited. Parking on the street may be difficult, and most of the meals were between $10-$20, which I personally felt was reasonable. I plan on dining here again.

Always fresh, always best. My boyfriend and I started going to Shiki about 2 years ago. I made him promise to take me at least twice a month, but honestly, I could eat here twice a week if he let me. He hasnt even been able to live up to his twice a month promise, but Shiki has been able to live up to my expectation of always delicious and fresh when I do finally get to dine there. I highly recommend Shiki ;)
