I am all about supporting local businesses and wanted to like this place. Unfortunately, the place has seen better days and probably better business. Interior decor hasnt been renovated probably since they opened.. When we went, it was a Friday night (May 2016) past 9pm and it was EMPTY. Fishtank was all murky opaque white (another red flag). My husband was scared to go in...but I convinced him to give it a try because I had read some decent reviews on the place. Given no other customers were there and Japanese food- esp sushi - need to be fresh we were hesitant to try their sushi and instead ordered the udon and sukiyaki. Sukiyaki was not a real sukiyaki where you make it yourself, thinly sliced beef and veggies were basically drowning in a brown soy-sugar based syrupy soup. Ive seen this type of "sukiyaki" served in not the best Japanese restaurants so I could immediately tell what level of Japanese food we were in for. My nabeyaki udon was ok - but the chicken tasted funny - I think it was borderline old. & it was missing the naruto/fish cakes the menu said it would include. On the upside, in terms of food selection authenticity, it beats Fuji Japanese Steakhouse (hibachi restaurant straight from 1983. Amazed they have these places and STILL call it Hibachi - really in 2016???- & real Japanese dont even call it that, its called "teppan-yaki" style). I should give Karuta no more than 2 stars based on our experience but with a bit of sprucing up, perhaps they can get a second chance because Westchester as a whole lacks good authentic Japanese restaurants. so Im rating it 3 stars for the benefit of doubt. owners should learn a thing or two from Hajime in Harrison.

My first meal here planted itself firmly in the top three meals Ive ever had in my life. Sure, the restaurant looks like one of those dinky Japanese restaurants (probably run by Chinese or Korean people) where you can order a quick and cheap order of California rolls and miso soup. Trust me, its not. The owner studied business in Japan, and for the 16+ years she has been running Japanese restaurants, the sushi chef has followed her for 15+ years because shes that good. Shes kept the sushi chef around because he is top-shelf. This restaurant knows where to put its priorities: the food. This fish you will eat has not been frozen or sitting around for hours. It is fresh, tender, and tastes like it just swam in from the ocean. The chef is extremely creative and an artist at his trade. He will arrange slices of avocado and seared tuna into a rose, and it will taste as good as it looks. Hes also an artist in general. The paintings on the wall? He painted them. The decor is low-key because the focus is on whats on your plate. Definitely go for the omakase. You will try things you would never come across normally (e.g. fish liver? Who thought itd be as good as it is?), and he often crafts things off the top of his head that you wouldnt find on the menu. I would trust this sushi chef for every meal for the rest of my life. Sit at the bar if you can and watch a master at work.

This place was DISGUSTING and Im never ever returning here again. Im reading all these good review comments and it boggles my mind how people can think that this place is actually good .... by far the WORST sushi Ive ever eaten ( and Im a huge sushi eater ) I ordered the salmon rolls and it had a foul odor , it had discoloration, and it tasted awfully fishy) on top of that they tried to charge me for something that I did not even eat and the owner was literally arguing with me in front of everybody for 5 mins. So absolutely disrespectful, no respect , and just very rude. DONT EAT HERE !!!! And on top of that the sush is expensive and the quality sucks !!!!

I went to Karuta tonight and sushi was excellent. The sushi chef knows his craft and the fish is of superior quality to that found in your average neighborhood sushi place. The prices for dinner are expensive ($30-50) per person for appetizer, a cocktail/wine/sake, and entree. Not an everyday place for me but on special occasions where I want to treat myself to the best sushi, Karuta is the best Ive had in Westchester.

Although it isnt fancy, the food is good and wait staff is quite friendly. Both the lunch and dinner specials make this an affordable place to enjoy both sushi as well as their bento boxes. They are also food allergy aware and have assured us each time that they use separate utensils as well as cookware. It is a place to go for a special treat for lunch especially because it never gets too crazy.

I have not found a sushi restaurant better and Ive tried several places, from the city to out off state. I love the service and the food is exellent. The setting is comfortable and inviting. I invite friends and family to come with me and i am never disappointed. Karuta Japanese Restaurant is the best. Me and my family love it.
