My girlfriend and I would go to the Herk at least twice each month for dinner, and probably another two times in a month just to have a beer and watch the game. We didnt go for the food, because the food isnt that great. We didnt go for the beer, because the beer isnt that great either. And we certainly didnt go for the service, because the service is consistently awful. We frenquented the Herk because we live a few blocks away, and we like to support the neighborhood. Well, that changed a couple months ago. We decided on the Herk, because we wanted burgers, beer, and a place to watch the Twins game. The bartender that night (the douchebag with the sad blonde mohawk. Ooooh, yr so pseudo-punk and stuff) refused to serve us, because, in his words, "One of the waitresses thinks youve had a few too many already." What? 1. My girlfriend had just gotten off work. 2. He was the first person wed encountered in the bar. 3. We were ASKING FOR DINNER MENUS. And, most importantly... 4. We simply hadnt been drinking...yet. Understand that my GF and I were ready to plunk down at least $50-60 plus tip, if not more (the beer is overpriced, and the food isnt exactly cheap). We are very good tippers, especially at establishments we frequent a lot. And, again, we hadnt been drinking before we walked through the Herks front door. What gives? The staff at the Herk has always seemed like a group of stuck up, lazy douchebags, but that night pretty much sealed it. My girlfriend and I have both worked in restaurants in the past, so we know laziness and outright douchebaggery when we see it, and we see it at the Herkimer A LOT. Good riddance. We went to Figlios instead. They have a better special on Tuesday nights anyway. We would have gone there in the first place, but its further away. To sum up: Avoid the Herk. Douchebags work there. The food kinda blows, and the beer is overpriced. Thanks for your time.

A small bit of parking can be found along the north side of the restaurant but you’re more likely to find street parking behind the place or metered parking in front. Brewing setup on the left side of the restaurant when you enter and the smell of stale beer is in the air. The menu choices are interesting and the salmon is great (Ive had it several times). They have recently redone some of their menu and its not for the better. Herkimer gets rated best jukebox in the Twin Cities from year to year. They do have a great selection of music but it usually takes about 6-8 songs before the ones youve chosen play (so if you want to hear something, pick it when you first get there). The beers are all pretty light in taste and taste fairly commercial. Not much to any of them. Mostly lagers on tap. The lighting is very dim most of the time other then a single candle on the tables so it could be a good option if you dont want to look at your date. Overall the Herkimer is mostly made up of locals that dont care what the beer tastes like so theyre happy. But for the true beer lover, Id advise you to head down the street to Bryant Lake Bowl and have something on tap instead.

This is the second time Ive tried the Herkimer. The first time (a year ago), it took forever to get my food. I mean like an hour. Since then, Ive started brewing my own beer (because I love beer--a wide variety of beers). So, I dragged my wife and adult daughter to this brew pub. First, its a fun environment and the wait staff was pleasant. You could enjoy this place with a group of friends. The prices are okay, parking isnt free, but its Uptown. The beer. I tried 3 of their craft beers and didnt like any of them. The first was their smoked Doppelbock. It was so bad, I sent it back. It tasted like someone pranked me by pouring a shot of worcester sauce in a porter. I couldnt drink it. Next, I tried the Red Flyer. It tasted like a stale rag. Actually, I could drink it, but I didnt enjoy it. Next, I tried the lager. It was the best of the three, but it was not a drink I would re-order. Disappointed with the beer. The food is okay, but nothing we had was award worthy. Its just bar food. Oh, and everyone at my table thought their take on BBQ sauce is awful and their tater tots are not worth the calories. I wont return unless I hear their beer has improved.

UPDATED: Ill leave my previous words below, so you know what I said before. The beer is now vastly improved. I think it was about six months ago that they found a new master brewer to take over brewing operations and it shows. The beer is far more distinct, interesting and flavorful. The menu is still pretty good, I havent eaten anything I disliked. Its pretty standard pub/bar food, although the Tatchos are a tasty little appetizer treat and somewhat distinct (becoming less distinct now). I want to love the Herk. I really do. They sponsored my kickball team four years ago. I really appreciated that. Unfortunately a brew pub should have fantastic brew and they do not. Time after time I order their beer. Time after time I am disappointed with how watery it tastes. I believe Ive sampled all of their beers and always the same issue. So, thats a bummer. However, the Herk is still a great place to go as they have good, simple food and a nice atmosphere. I just hope they figure out the brew quality.

I was very dissapointed. They obviously think they have everything going. But the first thing at a Brewpub, the beer, was pretty awful. It was off tasting - a bit chemical-like. We tried most of them and none were good. The selection was also very poor - lots of we dont have that one now. The food was pretty poor too. Well the nachos anyway. They were on a plate way too small for the price, seemingly thrown on. The extras were horrible. The beef was tastless ground to death, and presently very poorly. The Guac was also bad - no taste at all - and a bit old. They put all the liquid sides in little plastic cups that are way too small, and really ugly. The big chains do them better (and Im not a fan of these!). If you want a good brewpub go to Town Hall - its great. And Great Waters in St. Paul - pretty good, and lastly I like Barley Johns Brew in New Brighton (much more low key and you dont know what will be on tap - but it will be good, and the food is usually great too).

Beer and bar service- 5 stars. Food and food service- 2 stars. After having a great afternoon of sitting at the bar, we decided to grab a table and try what was advertised as an awesome Friday fish fry. For starters we were ignored at the table for about 20 minutes until I finally flagged someone down. The person I flagged down had the personality of a wet dish rag and seemed to really hate his job. The fish was average. For $12 you get a plate of fish and fries. Just dont do what I did and make the HUGE mistake of ordering a couple of tarter sauces with your fish. Charged me extra...For tarter sauce...With fish. (It did not come with tarter sauce.) Not only did the server charge me extra for it, it just appeared on the bill. Never did he mention it when I ordered it, nor did I see on the menu where condiments with a meal are extra. Dont waste your time eating here.
