I worked in Troy since 2000 where my love for sushi blossomed at the original Noble Fish in Clawson/Royal Oak on Main St. Im not 100% sure on the history of Sushi Ya, but from I remember hearing, what is now Sushi Ya spun off from Noble Fish. My colleagues and I have been dining at what is now Sushi Ya since the doors opened. I think it was named Noble Fish 2, then Sushi Do, and now its Sushi Ya. The best part about it was the self-service-- you walked up to the counter and either picked sushi from the cooler in front of you, or ordered ala carte. When your sushi was ready, they called your number and you simply walked up to the counter and picked it up. You could order a soda, or if you preferred water or green tea, it was always complimentary. The restaurant was ALWAYS packed. At peak hours 12:00 - 12:30PM, every table was occupied with a line in front of the counter. Guess what happened? They turned this gem of a self-serve sushi joint into a sit down restaurant-style establishment. And they raised their prices. And they eliminated some/most of the menu specials. Sushi is expensive anywhere. But now with the new management and the price hike and the 20% premium added for a waitress, it has made sushi even more out of reach. I have written this in their comment notepad they keep at their front table many times. I have even spoken to one of the original employees and pointed this out. The new restaurant-style experience is terrible. If theyre wondering why their restaurant isnt packed anymore they can read my explanation above. Bring back the self-service and lower prices! Update: Management changed in July. So if you see older comments from before July that had 5 stars, that was when it was self-service. Update 2 (11-9-16): Found a better alternative to Sushi Ya! If you are looking for better sushi, at a better price, try Tokyo Seoul on Square Lake & Livernois. $11 for 5-piece nigiri + california roll + miso soup + salad. The nigiri slices were thick!

With the recent change of management, came along with the service change from self serve style to table service, which made me thinking twice before going there. The self serve version was much simpler, faster and less dissatisfaction. The host was only interested in getting people seated and orders to go in, while no one refills the water when the glass was empty for over 5 minutes. That is with waitstaff walking by numerous times without noticing the empty glass. When the waitstaff finally noticed the glass was empty, she asked if I wanted more water while my meal was not even half way finished. (Common sense must be some kind of rocket science...) The worst part is, the price that they are charging are higher than the other restaurants serving similar cuisine in the area while providing a worse experience. Fast food style service with full restaurant price. I am very unlikely to return to this place and would highly recommended fellow eaters to go elsewhere unless the management change it back to the self serve style.

Was my first time really eating Japanese style food, good friend took me for an after birthday lunch and because I have been depressed. I walked in place looks well its not the best looking and there was an odd odor not fishy but like bad mop water. Quiet place not many people then the menu with no description of what the hell your ordering so noobs like me will be lost and the waitress had no idea what my order had. Then the food came and I was relived it was good, tried a lot of things iv never eaten before like a proper ramen and hell even Salmon. This place might not be the best might of gone down hill but for me it was nice and I enjoyed it. Find that these broken down looking places there food always has a charm. This place has a heart though it might not be what it was from how people say I think it was good and will give this place another shot. Thats it I guess.

First time visiting in a couple months. Food was great as always, but the two waiters were pretty terrible. Maybe they were new or just not used to working during lunch. Anyway, they didnt clean any tables. We luckily got there while there were a few left, but I observed two parties who had to ask for a table to be cleaned so that they could sit. They took forever to serve the customers. We waited at least 10 minutes before receiving menus (had to stare the waiter down and start to the counter before he even realised they we hadnt been served). Took another 25 minutes to receive the food (they didnt even give us our miso soup, which is always immediately available). Other things happened and I witnessed a lot of unhappy customers. Would have rated them lower if I had never been there before and didnt already know that they are capable of much more.

I went in on sunday nite at 6:30 pm. There was 6 ppl in the whole restaurant and 6 employees on, I waited for 35 mins for take out. The waitress taking my order had no knowledge of anything on the menu that I asked about. So did my best ordering blind cuz of the lack of help. When I got the food it wasnt what I ordered and just looked nasty and not like sushi, and I didnt want to wait another 35 mins for them to correct the problem. Which would seem to be to big of a task for all 6 employees that were on. (LEARN YOUR MENU IF U WANT TO BE IN BUSSINESS MUCH LONGER), and 35 mins is a unacceptable time for take on sunday nite with more workers the guest. Over all just plain bad go to bennihana its a few mins down the road its worth the travel. Dont waste your money here 1st & last visit to Sushi DOnt.

I have Nobana on my speed dial in my cell phone. Its conveniently located off of the Crooks Rd I-75 exit and well worth the stop. The sushi is delicious and they also have a cold case full of freshly made offerings, ready to grab and go which change all day long -- it commonly includes california rolls, spicy salmon rolls, some sashimi, Michigan rolls, salads and house dressing. Their Michigan roll is awesome, among several others. One of my favorite things is that theyll customize any sushi roll to your liking -- extra spicy? Added Crunch? No problem! This a great lunch and dinner hotspot if you have a craving for high quality sushi.

Ive been eating here since 2011 and through a couple name/management changes. This used to be one of my favorite sushi places because it was self service and the sushi was good. Great place for a quick sushi fix. I went there the other day and to my surprise, it has now changed to a full service restaurant. Sushi was still good, but I am not a fan of the full service change. I dont really see myself going back as there are many more better options that are full service restaurants. The big attraction for me used to be that I could get in and out quickly as well as the sushi being good. Change it back!

This used to be my favorite place in Troy for quick, affordable, and delicious sushi lunch, however they have changed their service to sit-down, and raised their prices... The sushi is still good, but the wait service is worse than any other restaurant Ive been to in Troy (and Ive worked here for over 20 years). What used to cost $12 and be as quick as you like, is now $18 with tip, and youre on their time. Business is way down from what it used to be before the change, so hopefully management will get the hint and go back to what worked so well in this location for so many years.
