Came here during the second week they were open for lunch. There were few other tables filled and service was good but at times a bit too much. The Good: Miso soup was delicious. They charge an auto gratuity of 10% (more on this later) The portion sizes were good Food was presented beautifully and quickly. The restaurant is beautifully designed. The food we had was delicious with a few minimal exceptions. Two rolls, udon soup, miso and a seaweed salad. The Not So Good: The gyoza were gross...dry chicken with minimal flavor that appeared to be deep fried. The menu has way to much on it...like an obnoxious amount of stuff. It may just be my preference to go to restaurants that do a few things exceptionally versus a million things just okay. To add to that, the rolls have entirely too many ingredients, literally reading about a single roll made me want to just order sashimi and be done with it. The 10% added gratuity may be new for some, but having lived in other cities it is fairly common to have 20% added automatically. I am fine with this but the way it is explained here is "we add 10% so subtract that from whatever you want to tip additionally." How about you just get some balls and add a full gratuity as your service is excellent and the whole 10% now and then whatever you want is just a bit too wishy washy for my liking. I have no problem with you adding gratuity when you provide excellent service and I know your employees are being paid well! Customers can always contest the gratuity if they feel it isnt warranted but the whole 10% things just feels weird...either commit and send a message to diners that your staff is awesome and deserves that 20% or leave it up to the customers entirely. Outside of minimal complaints I will definitely return...There wasnt anything outright "bad" here...except for the gyoza...Dont get the gyoza.

I visited Maru on a Tuesday, thinking it would be a good time to enjoy their fare on a day that might be slow. I didnt feel the inspiration from the ambience that people shared at all. The food was pleasant but nothing to get too excited about. While the decor is interesting, there are others that have blended the materials they use better. Unfortunately, I made the mistake and chose a spot near the sushi preparation area. I say this because you actually sit about 2 feet below the prep area and at eye level, you only see the bottom of the cooler. Its also one of the brightest areas and in complete contrast to the tables, that appeared very dark and lacking much illumination. As for the food, the fire cracker shrimp and mushroom medley was good, the Philly roll ok; but the miso soup wasnt what I expected (served cold). Like other ethnic restaurants, Ive always felt if you prepare a common denominator well, everything else should be good if not excellent. I dont know if I would return with guests, but if I did it would be during the day when there is plenty of ambient light. I do question the 10% service charge that is automatically added to the bill, regardless of the party size. It suggests "the service and food may be bad, but you still have to tip."

Not much selection for sushi downtown, but luckily the new Maru location is top-notch on quality. Prices can add up quick (about $1-2 more than other Maru locations in MI, per item), but an excellent revised Happy Hour prices. I love a place with Kirin on draft! Modern looking place with a relaxing, open feel. Acceptable service, and a good (but expensive) Japanese whiskey selection. Just to help judge my views - Ive studied abroad in Japan and visited there several times.. and Id say the quality of the fish (nigiri sushi and otherwise), among other things, is superb. Creative and unique Egg Custard (tamago) sushi which you must try, and the eel (unagi) is just what youre looking for. The basics (green tea, miso soup, house salad) are hidden gems. Loved the chicken gyoza despite feeling more like a chinese / fried roll, but the veggie tempura was a bit oily. Not sure why theres little Japanese food selection in the business district, but luckily Maru is now here to fill a void, and they do it more than sufficiently. Hooray! Look up Dr. Sushi pop-up events if you want more authentic stuff (Johnny Noodle King is also surprisingly good for seeming fusion-y).

Stopped in for lunch the other day. This place has a great atmosphere and the decor is perfect for a place like this. Was sat immediately and greeted multiple times. The menu was clear and to the point while highlighting several of there quick lunch options. I opted for the Bacon rice which I have to say was amazing. Everything here was perfect except one thing that irratated me beyond belief... Apparently they have a new tipping policy were 10% is automatically takes on to every bill (see picture). On principal alone I cant stand when restaurants pawn of their staff issues on to its customers... If you are having an issue with your servers not tipping out the bar backs and other staff then figure it out internally.... If you have clientele that are not properly tipping (which I doubt is the case) figure out something else... Dont mandate that a 10% price increase and tell me its going to the back of the house. Absolutely classless and for this I give you two stars in hopes that someone reads this review.

This is a good sushi option if you are visiting Detroit. We had a very good meal - the sushi is really well prepared and there are some innovative dishes. Their rice dishes are fantastic - we had the Habachi Fried Rice and we both said we have never had as tasty rice - could have eaten several more servings - lol. On the other hand the Seafood Ceviche was disappointing - it is disconstructed and an intersting presentation, but has very little taste and not a great deal of seafood. I would recommend this restaurant.

Food was average. I got the teriyaki chicken and the chicken had a lot of fat and gristle. It tasted good when I found a piece I could swallow. Service was odd. No less than four people explained to me the 10% service charge policy and the philosophy behind it. Not saying I dont support what they were doing and I appreciate the heads up so I did not over-tip but it was just odd. I would go back. I got the impression this restaurant was a high-end bar that served sushi and other asian food.

Looking for high quality fish, look no further. Amazing sushi! I am very overly critical on my dining experiences. Thomas and crew will take excellent care of you and exceed expectations. Hands down the best sushi in the area. If you havent been to a Maru, you are truly missing out. Per the one reviewer comment - "yellow fever" is in reference to my favorite roll served here, consisting of: spicy yellowtail, cucumber, radish sprouts, cilantro, serrano pepper and basil oil

Had a Great experience. The place was clean and nice to be at, cool and modern design. Overall environment was kind of quite, a lot of noise came from our side, where the kids set.... The Sushi was very good, fresh and been served nice (See pictures). beside of sushi, kids ate edamame that was nothing them edamame. An average roll was about $9 - $12. Since it in downtown Detroit, parking was an issue, however, we found close spot on the street. (Sunday, no parking fee)
