Once upon a time, when I was employed with Quicken Loans, I was enamored with their Chicken & Waffles. I had never experienced the dish before coming to the Ham Café, but once I indulged, I was hooked. Well, a lot has changed in 3 years :-( I had relocated and had not eaten there for about 3 years. While treating a relative out for brunch, I witness the worst customer service on that visit. We had to secure our own menu and it took a few minutes to even be greeted by the server. Our server was drab, listless and lethargic. Once we received our dine-in order, we were still short by one cutlery set and a straw. The waffles were cold, so cold till the spreadable butter would not melt and when the wings finally arrived (5 minutes later ), they were not prepared as requested. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles for a reason, as Id like to eat them together. My niece shared the same sentiment regarding the cold waffles, and neither one of us received the heated syrup we had originally requested. Not to mention, to my recollection, the waffles were garnished with strawberry sauce and whipped cream. I called the server over to express our concerns with the appearance and condition of our meals, and she quickly suggested that we converse with her manager. Well, unbeknownst to me, the manager is the same person that cooks the food in the restaurant. To say the least, the manager/cook was argumentative and unprofessional. He did not greet us when he approached to table and didnt not offer any type of resolve nor apology. He uttered something to the effect of "the waffles are delivered frozen...", and I couldnt tolerate another word. He then begins to snatch the plates from the table and continued to muddle underneath his breath. Well, I never argue and I refute to indulge in a dispute over my palate. If the food doesnt appeal the first go around, the second time might not be a charm either. My niece and myself politely walked out of their establishment and agreed to never patron the Ham Café again. The End.

Id been meaning to try this place for a long time, and after finding both the Lafayette and American Coney Island with lines out the door during the NAIAS event, found the perfect opportunity. Being a big fan of those "original 2" Coney places, its a little tough to admit, but my entire group and I enjoyed the coneys and fries just as much at the Ham Shop. And since they accept Greektown comps and charge $0.75 less for essentially the same coney dog, Ill certainly be coming back and bringing more people in the future. I havent tried any of the breakfast or sandwich options on the menu yet, but I will say this - we saw many different items come out, and the portions sure dont appear like theyll leave many people hungry. They have great meal specials too. For example, we ordered the 2 coneys, fries, and drink for $5.90. Basically, your drink or fries are free (depending on how you see it) if you go with a special instead of a la carte. No, its not a squeaky clean dining room with fancy fixtures, but thats not why you come here. For a greasy spoon, considering the taste, portions, and prices, its hard to beat.

This place is great i have been here several times through out the summer and now fall. I think some people dont realize how things work there, they dont seat you you find a seat and they will bring you water and a menu, in my case i grab a menu myself then find a seat. When your ready to pay go to the register where your bill is waiting dont wait for your waitress to bring it it wont happen. This place does a high volume of business they dont have time to be talking and chatting so dont take offense to that. The food is awesome, the breakfast is outstanding and somebody in the kitchen knows how to make the best grits ever! The prices cant be beat for the area they are in and the ham is all of that and some! I think some people are looking for elegance and that aint what this place is but its clean and hass good food and i will take that over elegance any day!

I ordered breakfast and I received cold grits the waitress returned the order to the cook named Sal he refused to correct the order he was verbally rude saying he did not want to serve me I am a professional business person conducting my self properly i took this as a racial act discriminating against me because I am black this will be the last time I go to the ham shop in Detroit on Monroe street if any one else feels they have been discriminated against please report to the Better Business Bureau and post your issue so all will know

Located on Monroe as you enter the Greek Town block this very busy place really has great service and many super sandwiches, Soups n Salads to fill da belly. They have runners delivering that hot delicious food for many blocks around. Get your Catfish crave on right here folks its battered and cooked to perfection.

Food is always good, customer service is not consistent. It is painfully obvious that carry customer is not a priority. I called in my order, was told 20 minutes. I waited 40 minutes, while I waited, I watched the same breakfast I ordered over the phone delivered to tables that had sat down while I was still waiting for my carry out. No Im sorry for the wait just a very nice eye roll from the the older Lady. Not cool Ham Shop.

The Good: this place is quick, cheap and good. The perfect lunch hole. The breakfast options are endless and the chicken and waffles are to die for. Go there! The Bad: it Doesnt always appear to be the cleanest place, but with the volume they pump out it would be hard to keep up. The Ugly: the neighborhood. Lots of bums and people hanging out. (Dont let it stop you though.

- Too attentive; 4 people greeted us within 60 seconds before we even had a chance to open our menus and take our coats off. - Order was wrong after correcting twice, and never got the right side orders that we asked for - Ketchup bottles were dirty with dried up ketchup and mustard on it Overall, I probably wouldnt come here again, unless it was complimentary.

The spinach omelette is so good! The turkey sausage breakfast sandwich is great when youre on the go. Its so filling. I love this spot, but only for carry outs. The servers are depressing and lack customer service skills big time. The food is amazing though. Ive never had a bad meal here. The carry out lady is very sweet. Detroits best spot for breakfast.
