Had an anniversary dinner here with my wife, and spent the night at the Townsend hotel. Had crab cakes and Caesar salad for appetizers. Both were very good, and the crab cakes had quite a lot of jumbo lump crab. For dinner, she had the tenderloin and I had the halibut special. We also ordered side dishes of broccolini and mushrooms. Everything was quite tasty, though the mushrooms were a tad overseasoned with salt--and this is coming from someone who likes salt. We also ordered two cocktails and two glasses of wine with dinner as well as chocolate cake for dessert. Food was old school tasty. Generally satisfied, even though it was pricey. Only complaint was my wife asked for both sauces for her steak (one made of veal stock and the other was a bernaise), as she didnt know which shed like better. After initially suggesting the idea to us, the server later came back to say that shed need to charge us $2 extra for two sauces. She was clearly embarrassed. This seemed very petty to me. Shouldnt be charging customers a $2 up charge on a $200 ticket. Recommend the manager shouldnt try to nickel and dime customers who are ordering many expensive dishes off the menu + drinks + dessert.

Went to Rugby Grill during restaurant week, which I will never do again. Restaurant week in Birmingham unlike other participating towns offers a reduced portion menu which I feel is wrong. Other restaurants during this event offer full portions. That said the food at the Rugby Grill was average at best. The salad was okay, the short rib was dry and uneatable, it was similar to a dry brisket. The chocolate tart was good, although my spouse received one that was a bit burnt. As a Birmingham resident I have tried most restaurants in town, but we had never tried the Rugby grill. Based on this experience it will be awhile before we try it again.

Went out for a nice relaxing good dinner, we chose Rugby Grille. We had great service at the hostess desk and got a nice booth inside. The place has a nice atmosphere but the service was below average for the standards of this restaurant and our steaks came out cold. We go out enough to know what great service and great steak is. Very disappointed in the overall experience. This was the first time at the restaurant and third time at the Townsend. Not the best in Birmingham thats for sure.

Rugby Grille Restaurant in early 2013 went through a renovation, hired a true executive culinary expert and now is an amazing restaurant! The ambiance is wonderful and offers great quality steaks and chops along with traditional fair. It is a white tablecloth restaurant in the Townsend Hotel that I seem I cannot ever get a table cause the locals fill the tables each night!

Just had a Fathers Day dinner. Food was excellent. Service was awful. 3 plus hours for dinner. Waited for every course and drink and check. Inexcusable for a hotel of this supposed caliber and price. We were not in a rush, but it annoyed me enough to write a review which I rarely do.

What a terribly overpriced restaurant, the chick pea crepe was disgusting and the burger was alright but for $24 I just dont want alright. I also included a picture of the $20 shrimp cocktail that still had the vein in them and were not properly cleaned.
