Wow.. What a horrible meal. The first clue should have been the silverware wrapped in a Selct-a-size paper towel, the smallest size possible, and a glass of lukewarm water with no ice. I ordered the Carolina pulled pork sandwich. I love NC pulled pork. Has a vinegar based sauce to it and comes with slaw on the sandwich. I asked for the slaw on the side which they didnt bring until I asked for it again. This pork was awful. I think they have a vat of vinegar in the back and let the pork soak in it for days. I couldnt even eat it. The bread was nice, home made in house, but it had also soaked up so much vinegar that I couldnt salvage it. Im glad I had the slaw on the side. One taste and I almost gagged. My wife ordered the Chicken Panini and said it was just ok, but not great. She wished she had shared it with me since I couldnt eat my sandwich. We also shared the onion rings which were ok, but the sauce for them was not what we expected. It was pretty bad. I asked for a Diet Coke and was informed that they dont carry name brands, so I said any diet cola. She said all they have is a type of cane cola. I told her I was diabetic so she said all I could have was the water. Later that day both my wife and I began to feel uneasy. Our stomachs upset. So much so that neither of us could eat dinner, and even the next morning we werent quite back to normal. I will say the waitress was very nice, but that doesnt make up for lousy food and queasiness all day.. My advice, keep walking and go to ... well any other place. Im not picky. Like almost anything. In fact, this is the first time Ive gone to a restaurant where the food was just plane bad. I see a lot of good reviews. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I never write reviews but Im compelled to after this meal. From new York so Im not sure if i have higher expectations than those that review this place wonderfully but I really did try to enjoy this place. I ordered the roasted chicken panini and couldnt even force myself to finish it. Literally something I wouldnt even feed my dog. Tasted and smelled similar to cold cuts that were left in the fridge for way too long. Bland, rubber tasting chicken. Pretty much put a raw chicken with no seasoning in the oven, cook it and refrigerate it, then eat it over a week later. Worst thing Ive tasted in my life. My girlfriend had a burger, and it was average. I shouldve taken the chef coating a fillet of fish in Pam and putting it on the grill as a warning sign to get out. The clam chowder? Dont expect anything. In fact, Campbells canned chowder is better. If youre looking for Luke warm bacon flavored water, order the clam chowder at scratch kitchen. Plus, enjoy their weird tasting ketchup. They refuse to carry normal tasting ketchup.

My wife and I frequently visited and raved about Scratch when it first opened. Sadly, it has changed. The few times weve been recently, the food, although supposedly made fresh that day, is reheated and lacking the "wow" taste it used to have. The baked beans, which used to be out-of-this-world good, are literally a watered down mush. The service was always bad, but the food more than made up for it. There is no excuse for both horrible service and horrible food. After giving Scratch a couple of times to redeem itself, we have know crossed it off. We suggest you do as well.

Great location in the center of all of the action. Food was great. My favorite part was the french fries, which came in a medium-sized plant pot and were cooked to perfection. Even the ketchup was made from scratch. My brother had a burger that he raved about, and my husband had a veggie burger that was excellent. I had a salad that was pretty good. Our waitress seemed a little "off", but other than that, we had a great experience here. Very busy, but we still got our food in a timely manner.

BACON Popcorn. It really is as delicious as you might think. Everything else was also incredible. I had a gift certificate to this place, and got a ton of food and loved it all. The fries are amazing. They remind me of Boardwalk fries from the Jersey Shore (the place, not the show). The burger was amazing, so juicy and flavorful. This place is an A+. The staff was super friendly and welcoming. I would have hung out there with them all day! Go here if youre in Salem, you will not regret it!

When Phantom Gourmet proclaimed that Scratch had the best BLT in New England, I had to make the trek up to Salem...in Friday afternoon traffic...to find out. While the BLT, with house cured and smoked bacon, was very good, Im not sure if it lives up to the title of best in New England. I was more impressed with the housemade kettle chips with a smoked onion and sour cream dip. Overall, quality ingredients, local food, and reasonable prices make Scratch a place worth visiting.

Great beer selection, everything in the kitchen made from scratch. The bacon, advertised everywhere, is brined and smoked in house, and is incredible. A bit expensive, but the selection and quality makes it seem downright cheap. Awesome staff completely willing to chat with the customers, and are clearly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. Cannot recommend highly enough. Only downside: few vegetarian options. If you are play with that, come here for a great meal.

My husband visits here every time he comes to town for work. Everything is homemade, including the ketchup and mustard. The sandwiches are delicious, but really its all about the fries. I could eat those for days. And our waitress, Debbie, was amazing. We had our one year old with us, so she took care of us so we could keep him quiet and occupied. Will definitely be visiting again.

I ordered the IPA and the Chicken and Kale sandwich. The bread was homemade, the kale was fresh, the chicken juicy and there was just the right amount of sauce. Perfection. I ordered onion rings and my friend ordered the fries. They both were so delicious. A great experience. Loved the 80s alternative rock music as well. Very local funky and hip feel.

Friendly service. Clean restaurant. All sorts of great food at our table with bacon being a common ingredient. Bacon popped popcorn. Bacon tacos. Baked beans. Two kinds of fries bacon (salted and regular salted). Bacon is used to accent the flavors of the dishes. This isnt cheap "bacon flavored" salt, as such it doesnt overwhelm.

Very limited selection when we visited. Food quality was good. I wish they would be a bit more open about providing diet beverages. Their niche market seems to be primarily only people who want to eat organic. You are likely going to be disappointed in this restaurant if you dont agree to a conspiracy theory about your food supply.
