Despite appearing crammed into a small corner spot on Exchange Street, Fuji is actually an enormous establishment with two floors of seating. The downstairs area has the full bar and half-dozen hibachi-style (teppanyaki) grills. This review pertains to the hibachi dining experience. Waiter service was apathetic yet adequate with erratic dish removal and water refilling. The hibachi chef was extremely friendly and put noticeable effort into entertaining the younger in our dining party. He did an excellent job providing entertainment during dinner. The hibachi-prepared food was very well done and my medium-rare steak (New York) was expertly cooked. The appetizer salad and soup were mediocre at best and added little to the meal. The "appetizer shrimp" were tasty but offered at an unusual time. The hibachi meals were all ~$20, which seemed expensive for the food alone. I finished my entire meal but everyone else in my party opted for to-go boxes.

Ive literally been coming here for over 15 years, and its never disappointing. Its one of the few places on Exchange St. thats stood the test of time. Admittedly, the food scene has grown up around this place, but Fuji has largely stayed the same, and thats fine. The quality of the food is high, the service is fine, and the atmosphere is OK. Granted, Im a bit spoiled, but it really is perfectly OK. There may be places now that are more hip and exciting, but Fuji is an excellent fixture that will NEVER let you down... Come to think of it, I dont think Ive ever had anything here Ive been dissatisfied with. Fuji is solid.

Waitress seemed miserable and was very rude. Four plates were provided to our party of five. Had to ask for napkins and chopsticks; were we expected to eat with our hands?!...Started sweating balls from the moment we sat down, I guess this place is cutting overhead expenses by not using A/C in the summer. The Hibachi chef was cool, but Waitress served us the wrong sushi. Waitress complained when we politely asked her to split up the check, and confronted us for not leaving her at least a 20% tip. I would be embarrassed to have any affiliation with Fuji in Portland, ME.

So I am all about spreading the love and positive energy. I don’t think that enough praise is ever given for a job well done and I believe it is important for growth and confidence. With this said, our waitress was a bit, well "unhappy" and inattentive. The hibachi was absolutely amazing and our chef was full of energy. I never get stuck on the negative of any experience, however, I love you Fuji and I think a more upbeat and friendly staff will only keep you at #1. :)

ive been on several occasions and never had i had a bad experience. they have great traditional japanese dishes along with some amazing sushi. If your a sushi lover and want something a bit different, i highly recommend the "godzilla" or "super godzilla". Its basically everything in one (the super is just 2 servings on a plate) The price is moderate, It can be expensive depending on what you get but its all worth it.

This place has gone down hill. The sushi rolls are anemic, and have a homogeneous taste. Things are friend and not Interesting. The salads are made for ants(small). I will not come back. Used to be too notch. Save your money, its not cheap. The salmon sashimi very was very good. Thats all I got for a positive.

A very traditional Japanese Sushi and Steakhouse. Great food and drinks. Excellent entertainment downstairs at the Hibachi Tables. A large downstairs cocktail bar. They have television at the bar. Upstairs dining is more formal with Kimono dressed waitresses serving in traditional fashion. A great place to eat.

Ive had sushi at some of the most vaunted restaurants in New York, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, but none had better sashimi than Fuji. Portland is a great town for restaurants, but Fuji has my favorite food. Its casual, but if you want the best fish in Maine, this is the place.

Portland has a lot of great Sushi places, and Fuji is one of them. The location and atmosphere of Fuji is what separates it from the rest, a bit pricy, but reasonable. The hibachi down stairs is always a blast too!

There are more expensive place to get sushi and other Japanese cuisine. However, Fuji nails it every time and isnt too pricey. Highly recommend!

Good sushi. The selection of maki rolls for the lunch combo is very limited. Only a few that have raw fish.
