The good: The wings were top notch. The best part of the meal. The pork belly sticks were decent, but then again, its pretty hard to mess up bacon. The grits were also fantastic. The not so good: I ordered a half pound of brisket, and sausage. My girlfriend ordered the Fun Guy burger. The brisket was flavorless, with no smoke ring at all. None. The bark was thin on one side and non-existent on the other. It could have been sliced from the flat where the point overlaps it, but there wasnt any fat at all to make me think that. Honestly, it tasted like it was thrown in a pan with water and sat in an oven for a few hours. Theres no way that meat saw the inside of a smoker. The sausage tasted better compared to the brisket, but lacked a smoke flavor as well. Again no smoke ring, but its not going to be in the smoker long enough to develop much of one. Next up, the Fun Guy burger. Again flavorless. The bun was great, but the burger lacked seasoning. The egg lacked seasoning. You can see if an egg has had salt and pepper put on it. Nope. None. Thats cooking 101 to season everything. The apricot aioli sounded intriguing. Too bad the burger never saw any of it. We also paid the extra for the truffle oil and smoked sea salt on the fries. I bet that would have tasted good had they been seasoned. The beer was ok, but we had visited a brewery earlier a few miles away that blew our socks off The Marty McFly PA may have been good, but the bar was set high by a competitor. Great name though. Our server was nice enough to come by about 15 minutes after the food runner auctioned off our food to us. By then it was too late. We paid our bill and left. All was not lost though. We went back to the other brewery and had one of their delicious beers to wash the bad, well non-existent, taste of AtG out of our mouths, and called it a night.

Let me preface by saying I believe this is my first rating Ive ever done and Im a very easy going, understanding and acceptable person. I asked what the special was and was told it was Tilapia with a really good sauce (cant remember the exact description she gave of the sauce). I thought Tilapia sounded good at the time so I ordered that and my buddy ordered the pulled pork tacos. The Tilapia came out super deep fried (who deep fries Tilapia??). We decided to split our plates and my friend was starving so he ate all of his food but the pulled pork tacos were extremely dry and the Tilapia probably would have been OK if it wasnt deep fried but it was. After the waitress dropped off our food we didnt see her until a half hour later (they werent that busy) when my friends plate was completely cleaned and my one bite of each completely full plate was sitting there that whole time. She came and picked up my obviously one bite taken out of the food plate and asked if I was all set. I raised an eyebrow and said yes. So she brought our bills. I regretfully paid for my food and left. Other service staff seemed to be friendly but I highly doubt I will ever return to this establishment. Food and service was terrible.

Wow, wow, wow. Ive had several Against the Grain (AtG) beers before and have been pleased. However when we visited the Louisville brewery we were greeted warmly at 11PM after a long drive into town. The bar tended offered sample tastes of a few AtG beers on tap and didnt hound us for a card to start a tab at the bar. We tried two beers on tap before seeing the cocktail of the month "love potion #90". We asked more about it and decided to give it a try. I split it with my wife however I now think we would have been better to each get our own as we fought over who got the last few sips. Weller 90, Lemongrass/Apple/Ginger simple syrup, Terragon, and bourbon barrel bitters. Garnished with a cocktail cherry and fresh terragon served over a large cube and in a lowball glass. While the presentation wasnt anything special the drink itself was delicious and fresh. We inquired more about the simple syrup and plan to try to re-create this for this spring/summer out on the patio. Great service and delicious libations are a great way to sum up this experience.

The food would receive 4.5 stars. We only ordered simple food consisting of queso and tortilla chips as an app, and my wife and I each ordered our own burger. She ordered it with onion rings, and I with fries. The burgers were both cooked to exactly medium, as ordered, and we both loved the fries and rings, as well as the app. They should have toasted the bottom bun a little more, as the grease from the burger left it kindof soggy, hence the loss of a half star. The 4/5 was b/c the waitress was not the best with her responsibilities, i.e. drink refill, paycheck, etc. I love the story behind their name. We certainly plan to come back and try out more items on their menu the next time we stop through Louisville. BTW, free parking next door when we went on a Wednesday in late December. We were told that the Louisville Slugger Museum was just 8 blocks away. But that worked out to a solid mile. Save your feet and pay the meter!

The chain of events that lead to the inevitable. At the start Brownings was awesome, had a regular crowd who enjoyed the ever flowing micro-brew beers produced by Brian Master Brewer. Also the Pints were on special for happy hours which was a good deal. Suddenly Brian was no where to be found with the most popular brews no longer available. The happy hour prices disappear (which enraged the regulars) with price of beer increasing!! Suddenly things like Falls City and PBR are on tap for 5.00 a glass (Are you kidding me) with the remaining micro-brews actually being more expensive than the bottle budweiser (This was unheard of in the beginning). No I am hearing unconfirmed reports that Brownings has been sold!!! Not surprised I have to say, hopefully the next person who takes it over learns from those mistakes. They had a great bar staff who was kind and sincere when they spoke with you. Hopefully those folks land on their feet!

This was our second visit to Against the Grain. Our first was on a Sunday afternoon when they were serving brunch. We werent expecting it, but it ended up being really good and so we decided to come back this evening. Tonight was NOT a good experience. Even though its Friday night it hasnt been busy at all, but weve waited excessive amounts of time on service, our food came out before our appetizer (they forgot to ring it in), and when the beer pretzel came the best part was the mustard - I dont recommend the beer pretzel or cheese (and my husband LOVES cheese, but he wouldnt even eat it. Our order came out wrong however we didnt complain because we had waited so long and were extremely hungry! Overall this second experience was seriously disappointing. The beer was good, and the my husband liked his burger okay, but that was it. I think that it could be good here based on our first experience, but it isnt consistent.
