I had a friend suggest I try the Turkey Ribs when ever I went to the "Shack". I asked him what in the world was a Turkey Rib to which he responded "GOOD" . And you know what , he was right, they are good! Really good!! And very unique, which is what I love about trying a new BBQ joint. When I got back home I "googled" the bone structure of a turkey. Best guess, these "Ribs" look to be the scapula bones from a turkey. The scapula can be compared to the shoulder blade on a pig or cow. But again, thats just my guess! Regardless, they are tasty and all white meat. These babies were smoked so perfectly that with a bit of a tug, the bone could be pulled easily from the meat. A white BBQ sauce, mayo and vinegar based, was served which was also unique. The combo was a great treat!! I ordered a platter to try as many other items as i could, chicken wings, pull pork and brisket, all of which were enjoyable. My server was great and attentive, even brought me some of their burgoo to try. Yum!! My only complaint, the "Shack" is about a 50 mile round trip from my house.......but that aint stopping me from going back!!

Shack in the Back BBQ is the real deal. If youre looking for a cozy, Salt of the Earth, back-to-the-basics barbecue joint in the greater Louisville area, this is your best choice. The Shack Samplers are fairly priced for the amount of food you receive and the options for mixing and matching are great! The ribs here are mouth-watering and literally fall off the bone. My mind was blown by the rub they apply to their ribs. It was absolutely delicious! Please dont forget to choose the Burgoo as a side. You wont want to miss it! Some customers may be turned off by the exterior and interior appearance. You have to buy into this joints appeal. It is supposed to feel back-woodsy...its called "Shack in the Back"! So, it deserves 5 Stars for living up to its name and offering a great plate of food!

The finish on the ribs is usually a terrific sticky cherry-brown "bark" that is very carefully crafted. As I have already hinted, they dont always get it just right. On one occasion the meat readily stripped from the bones, but still had a satisfyingly good chew (was not mushy) with that sticky finish blending in, and a good smokiness. Excellent! But on one other occasion, the meat stuck to the bones and the overall impression was that the ribs had a plain oven finish with little smokiness. Had that happened twice in a row, I would never come back. Im always hoping theyll be as good as those I had on my recent visit, which I would give an excellent rating.

I was confused at first with what to do first, so I sat down at a table and waited. I was told to go into the other room to order. Ordering was easy, but you pay first... which was odd for me. I told the girl its hard for me to tip anyone before I even know the quality of the service or food. Needless to say, the food was delicious. I ordered the sampler and every bite was better than the previous. The coleslaw and baked beans were awesome too! Next time I need to triple the coleslaw and half the meat (according to my wife). Even so, I will still enjoy the meal immensely. I will definitely go back. No bout a doubt it.

Some decent ribs. Wasnt the best Ive had but by far not the worst either. But, being near Louisville I would surely hope this isnt the absolute BEST the area had to offer. I personally dont think they baste the ribs often enough. Resulting in not much bark crusted on the outside. Pappys in St Louis, Smoque BBQ in Chicago, and Sticky Fingers in Chattanooga all compete for my #1 spot. I dont really care about "fall off the bone" as thats mostly achieved with brining your ribs overnight prior to cooking, not how you cook them. But what do I know. Anyways, 3 star ribs with 5 star sides, sweet tea, and service.

Shack in the back is one of those gems you can only find by going off the beaten path. The name is quite literal, as this is an old shack that has been converted into a BBQ sanctuary. Food is delicious, with the turkey ribs and the brisket being some personal favorites. Pricing is good and they offer carryout and catering options. I have always called ahead for carryout so cant speak to how the dine-in experience is; however, everyone has always been friendly when Ive gone to pick up my food. If your in or passing through Louisville, and wants to good bbq, highly recommend the Shack in the Back.

Been coming to Shack in the back for a couple years. I have never had a "clueless or rude" employee interaction at this place. They are always super friendly and willing to let you sample something BEFORE ordering it. The restaurant is always clean. As far as the food, The ribs(even the turkey ribs as well), Pulled Pork, and brisket are all favorites of mine(and I have been to 90% of the BBQ joints in town). Only complaint would be the pulled chicken has a tendency to be dry. The Burgoo and mac and cheese are worth the drive themselves. Great BBQ joint, try it for yourself.

My husband & I just moved to Kentucky & I looked up BBQ places nearby & came across this place so we decided to go last night. Never have I ever had such wonderful BBQ & my husband knows how to make good BBQ. Friendly atmosphere, good food! I finally had to quit eating cause I was beyond full but still couldnt get enough! They even let us take home a two big bone for our German Shepherd! I highly suggest you check this place out & get some chocolate pie while your at it ;) you wont be disappointed!

Stopped in on the way back from a site visit. Opened the door of the car and immediately knew we had found quality. Smelled like smoke and heaven. Servers were awesome. The counter girl persuaded us to try the bergu and the home made mac n cheese. The meat was spectacular as well as the service. We even got to meet Mike the owner and tell him how awesome his food was. I have starred this in my Google and will now make this a regular stop when we run to Louisville.

I have been eating here since they opened. No other BBQ, restaurant even comes close to Shack in the Back! The pulled pork is juicy moist and smokey, its so good you dont need sauce! The turkey ribs are awesome! Any of the meat is moist and flavorful. The sides are really great, especially the potato salad. My wife loves the spicy hot pickles so much, we buy them by the jar full. Try Shack in the Back, and you will never eat BBQ, anywhere else! !
