We finally made our way down to KBC after hearing plenty of good stuff about it and we were glad we did. The restaurant is located in downtown Kalona in a rather non-discript building that is fabled to have housed a tractor dealership in the past. Upon walking in, it seemed more like we were going into a rejuvenated warehouse in Seattle or Raleigh/Durham (foodie town of the south!) than into a spot in small town Iowa. The place is surprisingly modern, with some great lighting that creates a great ambiance without being pretentious. The bar graces your view when you walk in and is quite impressive. Taps line the wall and the area separates the two sides of the restaurant. To the left were plenty of tables and booths and to the right was additional seating including some couches with indoor fire pits (I think). Great spot to grab a beer and chillax. The beer selection is solid here. Good range of lights to darks and they have a mean tasting menu. An added plus is that theyll design one for you based on your likes. Mine was a brown to black beer spread and was quite tasty! Theyve also got $7 growlers on Sundays. Now to das comida - we started out with some beer battered onion rings. Excellent and HUGE! The serving was enough for 4 and they were solid. Word to the wise - replace the curry-esk dipping sauce with the cilantro aioli - its Boss. My better half had a burger. Tasty and local, the only thing it lacked was size. Sweet potato fries were solid as well. I had the Il Prosciutto pizza. Again, good, not great. The Proscuitto and capers were good, but the peppers were a bit intense and overpowering - good crust though and something a little less exciting would likely be great. The only place they would really benefit here is from hastening the pace of the meal a bit. It seemed like there was only one server for the whole place and while she did a good job, dinner took nearly 2 hours. Outside of a big group, this isnt a two hour dinner place. It seemed like we werent the only one who finished out appetizer and then hung out for a half hour either. Theyre new and once this issue is fixed, the spot really comes together. Overall, this is one of a now growing number of legit breweries in the area. Excellent beer, good food and a phenomenal, unique atmosphere that doesnt leave you wanting. The atmosphere bumps it to a 4 and with a little work it climbs even further.

The beer was good. The hard cider was nasty! The fried cheese curds were like little puffs of heaven......so fresh! They dont sell any diet soda or regular soda like Pepsi or Coke. The service was extremely slow and not very attentive. My husband had to ask the waiter to bring him his first beer more than once, like the waiter totally forgot. It took at more than five minutes to get my hard cider, which my husband had to go to the bar to order because the waiter didnt stop by our table to check on us. The water refill my son requested when we began eating was brought out until we were finished eating.

My husband and I recently took a day trip to Kalona, IA. The Kalona Brewing Company was one of the highlights of our trip. The staff was welcoming and informed about the menu. We thoroughly enjoyed the House Salad, the Wood-Fired Margherita Pizza, and, (most of all) the Cheese Curds! If youre looking for a restaurant with good food and a nice atmosphere, check out Kalona Brewing Company.

I really like this place, easily worth the drive here from the city. Friendly staff with a modern/industrial kind of vibe. Lots of beer available here. They have a strong list of staples but an even longer list of seasonal and limited release brews. I did a choose your own adventure flight and enjoyed everything. I will definitely be back again when in Iowa.

This place is phenomenal! The food was absolutely amazing and worth what you pay, love that its all organic. It makes a big difference. The service was outstanding and the drinks were fantastic, especially the imperial stouts. Will definitely be returning.

Nice space, decent beer. Shared a flight, then ordered a pint each. The bartender remarked one of the pints had kicked that barrel, and when we noted it was flat, he had one of the brewers try it to confirm it was indeed off. Given a new beer.

Ive never had a beer from them that didnt taste like buttered popcorn. Lazy brewing with poor quality control.
