This is about as good of sushi as youll get in the Des Moines metro. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. This was my favorite restaurant in town. When I started working in the building, my wallet thinned out. They validate your parking in the attached garage for $1. Sushi is all good, except for their "Iowan" pork rolls. If I dont get sushi, I always get the Sumo Ramen. Its a lovely dish that tastes great and works for any appetite. For drinks, their staple is the mule. For good reason. Its fresh and nuanced. Saki bombs are always fun, too.

Very good sushi in Des Moines Iowa. Sushi Chef Tim does a great job, is professional, and provides fast service. I ordered all nigiri. The tuna and salmon was descent but the unagi and hamachi was top quality sushi. The place is very lively and busy. It has a genuinely good feeling atmosphere. The chefs and service team are like a family and get along well. The paintings in the wall are done by one of the employees. Its a clean and colorful restaurant. Great job Akebono. Look forward to coming back again soon.

The place is really fun to go to, I think perfect place for a nice and quiet date. Music is modern and upbeat, electronic chill-style. Positives: ambiance, full bar, sushi is amazing Negatives: for as much hype online as there was for a Sumo Ramen, it was good But - it was waaay too salty. Not sure why they decided to put so much salt in the broth, braised pork was good, pulled pork was okay. Get Spicy Japanese Scallop nigiri, its awesome

The roll I tried called "nonsense" was quite good. Some heat with lots of flavor and packed with fish! Miso and salad were complimentary and both were good. I also had the Hamachi kama (yellow fin neck) and it was good. Different than any I had in that it has a BBQ sauce on it. Service was great, my water had to have been refilled 5 times or more. I sat at the sushi bar and both chefs were pleasant and conversational. Would go back!!!

I liked my Surf and Turf sushi. The presentation was awesome and it was so fulfilling. Akebono is also a beautiful restaurant. My waiter seemed to have had a bad day. He was rude, and his whole demeanor while serving my table just seemed off. That was dissapointing, however, I believe the manager, who was making rounds around the restaurant was very kind and attentive. Went above and beyond to greet all the guests in attendance.

This is our favorite Japanese place in town. We love getting the bento boxes (great value!) and fried tofu. Ill usually get a sushi roll or a piece of sashimi as well. We have never walked away disappointed. The kids hate everything that is not pizza or a plain burger, but they love this place. Great service in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Casual enough for a regular visit, and nice enough for a date night or business meeting.

This is seriously the single best sushi joint in all of Iowa. This is not taking into consideration of price (which is cheaper than almost any other sushi place). The service is great, people are amazing, and if you go with a big enough group you get a complimentary sake bomb if youre lucky. Also an extremely diverse drink menu. I highly, HIGHLY, recommend this place. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.

I have lived in Des Moines for six years and never heard of this place! With a fantastic lunch special, nice patio and the best service I have experienced in a long time, this restaurant is worth the visit. Although the food was a little bland and I dont think the flavors of some of the Bento Boxes go together, Akebono deserves 5 stars for doing something simple and right.

The food is fantastic. They were very busy but seated us quite quickly (they are always busy for dinner, and we did not have a reservation). Food came out quickly. One sushi roll we ordered was forgotten but the staff took good care of us and made things right when we brought it to their attention. Try the donburri and sumo ramen. The skewers are also delicious.

If you are looking for unique creative food with a personal touch then Akebono 515 is the place you should go! If you are wanting a unique outing for a group, call them, they are so great about making your group feel at home...... When you are there, make sure you say hello to Tim / Chukee / Nam / Kha these guys are the best.... Cheers !!

We love the food but service was very slow tonight. Our main meals took a long time to get there. We waited over 20 min for waiter to come back and take order for desserts. We would have ordered more drinks but no time by time he came.... For the cost of $100 for 3 people, service was not worth coming back.

This place is great! The sushi is fantastic and served artistically on a slate slab! The atmosphere allows for all walks of life to dine here. You could just casually walk in before a night out on Court Avenue, or meeting there for business. The servers are kind and knowledgeable about their products.

Fantastic sushi prepared by experts. The menu isnt too long--a good sign. I had hamachi and maguro nigiri which were perfect. Heard the unagi was great too. The Sumo Ramen was super tasty. Pork belly might be overkill for this soup, but the flavor was excellent.

I had a good time at this place with my friend Derek I know I had a good time cuz I remember saying "man Im having a good time here" but the rest of the night was a blur in all seriousness though for being in a landlocked state the fish it was pretty dang good.

Great Sushi in downtown Des Moines. The owners really care about their restaurant and their staff is trained well to know Sushi. The great atmosphere is complimented by a full bar. Akebono 515 is a great place for a date night or a celebration!

This is one my wifes and my favorite sushi places. It has a nice atmosphere and the drinks are always good. The sushi is top notch. I love the Alaska roll. They offer salad and soup with the meal which is nice too. My kids love the udon soup.
