We moved to Missouri from the East Coast a year ago and Kato was the first sushi restaurant we found and tried. At first it was okay - not amazing, but good enough. I admit, I have pretty high standards coming from the coast with the fresh seafood variety and majorly impressive sushi establishments. As weve eaten at Kato over the last year, it has changed a lot. Im not sure what is going on, -but- (1.) most of the nigiri Ive ordered has been doused with lemon my past few orders (2.) Ive had a few orders messed up (3.) the selection given with the sushi entrees have gone way downhill, forcing hubby and I to order piece by piece, which, of course, increases our bill by 30%. I hate to say it, but were finally going to try somewhere new. Nice people, the staff has always been friendly, the place is relaxed and nice enough inside - but I wouldnt highly recommend it.

This place is not an authentic Japanese restaurant. This place is run by chinese ppl who are trying to make sushi...If you are a sushi lover, you will see the difference right away and will not come here again. If you are going to a sushi place for the first time then you might not see anything wrong but if you are a regular sushi eater...stay away from this place otherwise you will be highly disappointed!!! Forget about sushi, their Hibachi meals are not fresh either. I ordered a Hibachi meal and the waitress came back with my order in about 6 mins (ring ring ring). This is how long it takes to microwave something. This is the reason why I am giving excellent rating for service but food is horrible. And stop following these ZAGAT ratings as they are highly misleading. I went to three restaurants after looking Zs rating and they all were horrible.

This place sucks. My boyfriend and I went in for lunch during the week and everything about it was horrible. The service was less than ok(we were one of three customers in the whole place so the waitress should of been on top of everything). We saw our waitress maybe three times and had to ask for drink refills or anything else we needed. Then she proceeded to act like us making her do her job was the worst thing ever! We both ordered the bento boxes and were very disappointed when nothing had any flavor! It all tasted like cardboard! Im an avid sushi eater/lover and I can tell you that Ive had better sushi from a cheep super market! I would not eat here again, and I would advise you to do the same. Nara is definitely worth the drive! Dont bother eating at Kato!

This place warded me off from sushi for a long while. Their raw fish isnt very fresh, even for midwest standards. You dont get that fruity, or smokey, or filling taste that you get with fresh tuna/salmon/etc. It all tastes fishy. The octopus was just awful. Too rubbery, Ive had way better. Nigiri is way off balance, too much fish, not enough rice, nearly impossible to eat in one bite. The only reason it doesnt have 1 star is because the Americanized rolls were good. Eel roll tasted great, but I want something a little more authentic. All in all, very disappointed. Pity too, I live so close. :/

Worse service ever!!!would not reccommend this place to anyone....came in with 5 adults and a child...the waiter started off with a bad attitude when we asked him if it was a sushi buffet(im from cali).....then when we said we were ready to order he said drinks only....we waited another 15 mins to order...had to tell another lady working there we were ready to order AGAIN....and when she went and tolf our original waiter...he loudly said "im busy" ....standing behind a counter..too busy to take orders from paying customers....sure enough my party gor up and left.

I eat here once a week and never have a bad experience. The sushi chefs are great and the hosts/hostesses are also, when theyre not too busy. I almost always order the shrimp tempura appetizer and the chirashi,a sort of chefs choice of sashimi, usually about 15-18 smaller pieces arranged beautifully atop a bed of rice. Always wonderful. Ive tried other sushi and sashimidishes and theyre great as is the curry, but I always go back to chirashi. As I said, I try to get there weekly and plan to go back tonight...see you there!

The restaurant seems clean. However, we sat down and waited over 30 minutes. We were well dressed and properly attired. There were 4 servers standing the sushi looking at us. The bartender was standing there on his phone. We watch people walked by us and noticed we havent been served. We use to know the owners. I usually give everyone a fair opportunity but, we were getting frustrated how they were just standing there and catering to the "other" kind of people. Hopefully it gets better the next time we visit.

Took 15min to get our drinks. We actually got the the appetizer before our drinks and then we got our entrees before our soup and salad, and only after we reminded the server about the soup and salad. The crab rangoons tasted like I was eating spoonfuls of mayonnaise, not cream cheese. And whatever you do dont order off of the hibachi menu its plain unseasoned meat and vegetables and very over priced. The sushi was sloppy. Dont waste your money go to Saki Sushi off 64th & i29

The sushi is great, but the service is horrible. The first time I ordered for lunch my meal was $13 and some change, two days later we ordered again, and I got the same exact thing and it was $25 at first until my boss who picked it up told them that wasnt the price before, and they changed it to $17 something. Tonight I called 10 minutes until 6pm, placed my order they told me 15 minutes, got there at 6:20 and they tell me they never received my order!

The sushi was alright and the service left little to be desired. Our waiter kept standing by the bar texting and when they came to get our drinks orders they took one drink order and left. Then they came back and got another drink order, this happened a total of 4 times. It was not a big deal but was slightly anoying. Overall the sushi was good but very expensive. There are some sushi restaurants around KC that are better.

This place is fantastic! Easily the best Sushi / Hibachi restaurant in the area! The sushi is absolutely fantastic! The rice is cooked correctly and is fresh and warm on each roll. The rice just melts away in your mouth finely binding all the wonderful innards of the sushi. The tempura is thin as air and has a wonderful crunch. The hibachi steak is heavenly! cooked to perfection and disappears quickly.

I see a lot of bad reviews about the actual food on here, but I must disagree. Sushi was delicious in my opinion. Then again, it was my third time having sushi. We did carryout in lieu of dining in, but even our encounter with the person who rang us up was not so good. He was very rude and had a high pitch, arrogant tone in his voice. But the food is good. I will probably go back.

Ordered hibachi shrimp and I received boiled shrimp that had no sear markings. The shrimp had NO seasoning on it at all and way overcooked. The rice was pretty bland as well. I took two bites and told the waiter I cant eat this especially, not for $19. I would recommend if your reading this prior to visiting do yourself a favor and dine elsewhere.
