Ive now been to Kyatchi a number of times and find it not only to be one of the best Japanese restaurants in the twin cities but also one of the more unique eating spots you can come by. Whether dining on your own at the sushi bar, on a date with a special someone, or out on the town with your family, this place is a must if youre craving Japanese. From their sustainable seafood, to the unique pressed-sushi, to their hand-crafted Ramen with pork belly, you really cant go wrong: everything is made with a passion for excellent food and with the highest quality of ingredients. You can taste the care each chef demonstrates in their cooking in each and every bite. For me, one of the most surprising aspects of my visits is that even though I love love love sushi (and their sushi is amazing), it is rarely sushi that I crave when I am there. My advice would be to get a few things to share so you can experience items throughout the menu. The chicken kara-age is an absolute must: perfectly crispy, marinated chicken with a perfect touch of citrus and a mayo sauce that will make you smile (also, the Tofu Kara-age is also amazing if youre not into eating birds). Looking for something really unique? Try the Agedashi Tofu and be wowed by the super soft tofu and dashi broth. The Ramen is delicious and a must for the Ramen fan in you. I also cant not talk about the Hot Dogs. This place has a "Japanese Baseball Theme" and with it comes the hot dogs, all unique, all thoughtfully put together, each one delicious. I also really enjoy the Ika Shogayaki, translated to "not your grandmas calamari" (JUST KIDDING, thats not what it means but it should be!). This squid has been marinated to perfection in soy and ginger to give it the perfect flavors, and then grilled. Its fantastic and a must for you seafood lovers out there. Finish your meal off with some donut holes (youll want to drink the caramel glaze, its so good (nice one, Ben DeCamp)) or with the new black sesame seed panna cotta (incredibly unique and tasty, and something I would never order unless I was told. So good!). I could go on and on about the donburi rice bowls, the pressed sushi, and sushi rolls. But you should totally hit this spot up for yourselves. They also have a great happy hour with a nice beer and sake selection. One more thing to note: You get the feeling that EVERYBODY likes working here. The service has always been excellent for me, the chefs have come out and said hello, the line cooks and other servers always seem to be having the most fun, and I believe they raised the wages to support their employees. It creates a fun and inviting culture that makes you want to be apart of the team, and definitely helps you decide to come back for more.

I visited my new favorite sushi restaurant, Kyatchi again on Saturday, and as usual received impeccable service from each employee (Roy is a wonderful bartender) and out-of this world food. Each time I visit, Im greeted warmly and with familiarity. It always feels good to be remembered by name, and Im thrilled to have developed a relationship with their incredibly talented sushi chef Danny (he is the BEST). Upon requesting a chefs platter (trust in him, and youll have zero regrets), we were treated to the finest nigiri and roll Ive seen and tasted yet. Danny was kind enough to personally serve the platter to us, and I know his hand-selected cuts must have been the best in the restaurant that day. I have to say that genuinely, this was the best sushi Ive ever had (Im no stranger to this delicacy and I had felt this way the last few times Ive been in). The art in which the flavors are combined with perfect balance, the care to describe each piece along with the best order in which to eat them for optimal palate experience, and the time that was taken during a busy night to talk to my girlfriend and I left yet another incredibly memorable impression. We were enjoying our food so much, and were so floored by the incredible flavors, that we couldnt help but talk about how amazing it tasted. We were so vocal about it, that our neighbors sitting at the bar decided immediately to order one of the Nigiri cuts we had been served. Needless to say, they agreed with our opinion! If you havent yet experienced this gem in South Mpls, I highly encourage you to treat yourself - I guarantee youll be back!

I think they need to clarify that this place will not fill you up. Ordered 2 things "sake and bonchi" along with miso soup and the blue beauty oolong tea. I seriously thought the food was a complete joke. I got three thinly sliced pieces of fish which were not big at all. I had to tell my friend next to me to stop laughing because it was rude. On the other plate I got had a cut of fish about half the length of a pencil and in width its probably about the size of a finger, it comes with a pinch of rice. This all ended up costing 20$. I went in okay but I left really hungry. Sorry maybe I dont understand this type of eatery (i get it, its supposed to be upper class sushi) but I also dont understand paying 20$ to stay hungry. We grabbed burgers afterwards. Totally felt robbed and was disappointed, however the night shift manager did a great serving us.

When I first opened the door, I felt I had stepped into a restaurant in Japan, especially the aroma! We had a 15 minute wait for a party of 6 on a Saturday around 8. My family all ordered something different so we could try something different. The great dishes were the Kara age, Ramen, Chirashi, Yakisoba and Mochi Cake. The ok ones were Tonkatsu and Vegetable Ramen. The Agedashi Tofu was really good as well. The proper way to eat it is to out the daikon radish and ginger into the sauce, mix then pour over the tofu. The dishes were delicious and very authentic! Im half Japanese and have visited Japan numerous times. My Japanese mom approved as well. Highly recommended! The only negative is that portion sizes are a little small. Good happy hour deals also. Ill be back!

I expected more, it is my fault for ordering ramen at a general Japanese restaurant. The noodles werent fresh and the veggies were unappetizing. The broth flavor was fine but it didnt have that wonderfully fattiness Ive come to expect from great ramen. The appetizers were alright - we had the fried tofu and a triple veggie combo. I liked the fresh lemon squeezed onto the tofu but the mayonnaise dipping sauce did not work for me. I would go again to try the tofu but in I think this restaurant is more for the fan of low brow, for lack of a better word, Japanese food. See: hotdogs on the menu, mayonnaise dipping sauce on or with many of the items.. And, dont order the ramen, my friends dish was apparently quite good.

Our server was extremely familiar with all aspects of the menu. We took his recommendation and ordered a huge variety for the four of us to share. They even split the Ramen for us! The food all tasted very fresh was perfectly prepared. It was our first visit and we will be back soon. I read in a previous review that someone was mad because they spent $20 and were still hungry. This is unfair because it is not possible to be full off of $20 worth of sustainable sushi, not in America anyway. If you want to be full for cheap, order the Ramen or go hit a drive-thru for a bacon cheeseburger.
