This is a great place for families to go or for something different than a typical restaurant. You will get great food and a ton of it. My family started going to Ohana about 15 years ago. We go about once a year when my sister and her family visit from out of state. At first it was something fun for my niece and nephew when they were young. But even with them grown, they still love going and is now a family tradition. I will admit after 15 years, the jokes and tricks get a little old. But our chef was great this last time. The food always tastes great and usually more than one can eat. I had the steak and scallops combination. The scallops are served with a sauce over them. Everyone raves about the sauce, and it is good but I always get it on the side because the scallops are amazing on their own. Ive also had the chicken, which is always good. And a lot of people love their calamari. The only negative was it was really hot outside the day we went and their AC system was having trouble keeping up. So it was a little hot in there.

I went to Ohana for a co-workers birthday and had a not so great experience. Our actual server did a great job and was very attentive even with our large group, however our chef was crass and made sarcastic demeaning jokes. I had ordered the scallop dinner and asked that he not include the sauce on mine so he was like yep not a problem and promptly removed them from the grill after they had only cooked for about a minute. I asked if he could put them back on because they were raw in the middle, and he gave me a lecture about how I should order them well done next time since they serve their scallops mid-rare!? I have never heard of such a thing. Worst part is the other orders of scallops, that were started at the same time as mine, were still cooking the whole time this exchange played out. I dont know, maybe he was just having a bad night but between that, the dingy garage like decor of the grill room, and everything being overly greasy I wouldnt go back. Sorry Ohana....

It was my youngest sons birthday dinner, and he REALLY wanted to go to a hibachi, mostly because he loves the show. I saw that Ohana had the best ratings according to google and decided to give it a try. The four of us (myself, wife and two sons) get there around 5pm and wait around 30 min for a table. No big deal, my little boy is super excited and can barely contain himself. Having been to numerous hibachis I thought I knew what to expect, but the cook tells us they cannot do anything with fire, which is a bummer because who doesnt love the onion volcano? On top of that the cook is newer and doesnt really do ANY tricks. Basically we sit there as he cooks dinner making small talk and I can just watch the joy fade from my sons face. I basically dropped $100 to ruin my sons birthday dinner. One star for making my little boy cry.

Wow. Thats the theme of this place. Not wow because of the views or the location. Not wow because of the variety of the food. Wow because this was the most fun Ive had at a hibachi table in a long time. Wow because the server was fantastic and conversational and did not constantly insult you because they think thats funny (that type of humor/food combination works at one place in the world and that is Ed Debevics...and as of 2015 they were temporarily closed). Excellent (huge) portions, fast service, quality ingredients and 3/5 flavor. Noodles at the end of the meal - and the chef at the table next to us who did insult people - are completely unnecessary and slightly tarnished the experience for me. Do not be fooled though. I definitely ate the noodles and left very satisfied.

Excellent place for dinner. You wont be disappointed by anything at this hibachi grill. The cooks are funny and friendly, the service is good and fast (once you get seated), and the food is amazing! Their prices are the best Ive seen for a hibachi grill of this style. You can purchase any of their housemade sauces to take home - I particularly recommend the scallop sauce and chili oil. Make sure you try the scallops while youre there. Make sure you call ahead for a table in less you want to wait (theyre so good, they tend to always be busy). This has been one of my favorite restaurants in the Des Moines area for years. Ive moved away, but Ill definitely be back when Im in the area.

Owner is always there and will always cook when hes in, proves he loves what he does, and cares about what he owns. Food is awesome. If you know someone who doesnt eat shrimp have them try the free appetizer shrimp with ginger sauce, OMG! sooo good! YOU CAN BUY IT TOO! They recently remodeled, and it looks great in there! wed steak and shrimp special 2 for $30, which comes which free appetizer, salad, soup, meal, then mushrooms, pasta! Huge meal !! They cook infront of you, at a table of you and your friends or strangers, but the chefs are very friendly and keep things fun and casual. TRY SCALLAPS!! wowzer! If your feeling crazy try a volcano drink! Great small party place!

In college, I went to Ohanas with some friends and it was amazing! Now 5 years later, I was extremely disappointed with our dining experience. The food was still good, but everything else was terrible! Our server and chef were fighting (and it didnt seem like they were joking...) which led to delay, delay, delay. There was pretty much no show at all. He arrived; he cooked; he left. Then, upon checking my credit card statement, they charged me more than I had written on the bill, so now I have to go take care of that! After this, I will never go back again. There are far better places to eat without the nonsense we had to put up with at dinner.

This is the best hibachi restaurant in Des Moines....dont be fooled by any of the other ones around town. There is a reason why you need reservations to get into this one during peak times. Their 2 for $30 specials on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays are great deals--that is usually when I go. The service and food is consistently great and exceeds my expectations each time. Owner and management are very involved and care about customer experiences, which is part of the reason why I believe that the standards and consistency has remained so high over the years. Keep up the great work and Ill keep coming back.

Havent even dined with Ohanas so cant comment on the food. However I did speak with RON today over the phone to make a reservation for a family "out to eat" night and was told that he could not make a reservation without having my credit card information. I quickly declined that and he seemed offended. Either way his response following was a bit rude. I commented that I would go somewhere else and he was just fine with that. So thanks Ron, we will spend our money elsewhere.
