The food is good, my wife and I used to go there every Monday, but some of the servers/waiters behave in rude at the least to borderline threatening ways at times making us so uncomfortable we wont be going back. An example occurred as follows: I always order the same thing, the #11 combo with an extra beef enchilada. One time even after the waiter repeated "beef enchilada" he brought me an extra taco. With some trouble I got his attention and told him Id ordered the enchilada not the taco. He glared at me and said "no you ordered taco and there it is". My wife said to him "no he ordered the enchilada like he always does". The waiter again, raising his voice, said "no you ordered a taco". Another waiter intervened and exchanged the taco for an enchilada while the first waiter stomped away quickly. No one apologized or even asked if everything was OK at check out. It was all just too weird for me and I dont need to pay people who behave this way.

I have visited this restaurant twice. The first time we went because we had a gift card. The seating was uncomfortably close to other tables and the decor and flooring made the place feel/look dirty. Our food was acceptable for the price, but I wouldnt consider it great mexican food. The second time we went we didnt even stay. The host/manager refused to even acknowledge or seat me because I walked in by myself while my husband parked the car with our kids. The place was half empty and there was one other family that came in a minute behind me. I asked for a table for 5 and he asked if my whole party was present. I said they were parking the car and he refused to seat me until they had all walked in the door. He then looked past me to address the people behind me. I was totally floored at how rude he was so we just left.

We read the good reviews of this place and decided to give it a try. And we are very pleased that we did! It was a slight detour off of I-35 but it was well worth the extra couple of minutes! The place was pretty busy when we arrived but we got seated right away. The service was extremely fast and we got our food in no time. And the food was AMAZING! I grew up with good authentic Mexican food and have to say that this place was legit! I had the seafood burritos which were quite good and I am usually not too fond of seafood! I would definitely order that again!! If you are looking for a good place to stop and eat, this is a must!!!

I ate there yesterday for lunch. The server had good and bad aspects. He was incredibly fast and refilled our drinks three times without being asked. However, he was disinterested to say the least. He made no attempt to ensure we were having a good meal. Simply took the order, delivered it and then brought the check. The food was very good, not outstanding because it was a little boring in both flavor and presentation. The decor was fine. Booths were easily accessible and the place feels very open and comfortable. Bathrooms were spectacularly clean.

I have eaten at all three el Azteca places by this owner....2 in Ames and 1 in Ankeny for yrs now since they opened and have never had a bad meal or experience. Its no wonder that they are rated the # 1 place in Ames for mexican food and are super busy evey day. The one negative review by Danielle whats herface is totaly out of place with everyone elses ratings. She needs to stay home and not go out to eat with her attitude and not spoil it for the rest of the world.

Absolutely disgusting, beef was grisly, taco seasoning in fajitas? ?? Veggies were slapped on the grill and served "unprepared " they asked if everything was good I politely said that it wasnt and got ignored by waiter gave us our bill guy at the counter asked the same got the same reply and said "oh what was wrong?" I told him . He then shrugs his shoulders and rang it all up, no sorry or anything. I see why the parking lot was empty :/ -0 stars

Easily the best Mexican restaurant in Ames. (Top 5 in the entire state in my experience) Salsa is awesome, food is always hot, fresh, fast and delicious no matter what you order, the restaurant is always clean when I go and the wait staff is great, especially when I go with my family (they ALWAYS give my 17 month old son special attention and are really good with kids from what I have seen). You will be glad you chose to go here.

As some of the other reviewers have said the service is good and the food was out very quickly. The margarita had a tequila bite (more so than most of the watered down margaritas that you get) that some might not like, so keep that in mind if you are getting a margarita. The salsa is a little spicier than what they normally have at a Mexican restaurant, but it was quite good.

My boyfriend and I ate at El Aztecs before the Longhorns vs Cyclones game last night. Service was excellent, food was to die for, and the restaurant appeared to be very clean. Staff was friendly. Highly recommend the Chicken Chimichanga ... It was PERFECT! And the salsa was TO DIE FOR - a little spicier than your average Mexican joint, but for us it was perfect!

This is probably the best Mexican food Ive had since I was in Mexico last! They exceeded my expectations in every way. The service was fast and accurate. The food was delicious, chili verde and enchiladas, the atmosphere was on point, and the price was excellent! I wish I was in Ames for longer because I would eat here frequently

El Azteca is my second home. I would use every last cent i have to come here. The food tastes like god himself created it, the staff and i greet each other by name, and i will probably invite the owner to my wedding because he is that good of a friend. Prices, service, and all meals are awesome. Highly recommend this place.

This place is ridiculously good. Food is incredible, served fast, and at a price where youll find yourself double taking the bill thinking they forgot to add the entre. Its packed for a reason. Went there on a Friday after lunch and it filled quick. Filled quick for a reason!

Servers are always helpful, and attentive. I have eaten there many, many, times and have found the service to always be awesome. Also the food is served super fast. This a place you can eat lunch at and make it back in time for an afternoon meeting.

My wife and I have been going to El Azteca for years and we love it! Food is great. Service is great! They are very friendly and quick. We like all 3 of their locations, but the S Dayton location is the one we go to most often.

Traveled a long ways to have their food. They closed the kitchen early even after I called ahead to check the hours. They have lost my business. If you are open until a time then you should stick to it I have to keep my promises
