I just was there not even two hours ago and having been brought up in a family that was rather well off, I have had quite the gambit of signature Chicago fare, from Mortons to Everest, the Bergoff to Frontera. Including suburban delights such as Chicago Prime, Maggianos, and Allgauers and Dover Straits. The food was fabulous as always including the usual discussion that it is always worth the drive. I have in fact driven more than 3 hours one way for a date at Tapalpa when we had lived in central Wisconsin. Today I ordered the Mexican Sushi, not appetizing sounding I know. but definitely the best meal I can remember. By Tapalpas standards it was a small serving but definitely enough for one meal. Price was extremely reasonable at less than 11 dollars. I can also not stress enough, that this was the best thing I could ever remember eating. Better than fresh caught Florida golden crab, better than fresh Clam Chowder in Seattle or Maine, better than my grandmothers cantonese cooking. I usually dont review places unless I really love them since there are always plenty of bad reviews out there so here it is.

Ive visited this restaurant a few times and each time Ive been there it just gets worse. The food is ok. They start you off with greasy chips and a very bland and mild salsa. Ive tried to vary my menu experiences and honestly Ive given up. There have been bits of rice hard enough to break a tooth and the entrees are a tad over priced. The service is lacking. Its a small place so they try and get as many people in there as they can but then they forget about you. We were done eating the basket of chips before we got to order our drinks. And then our order for food was never entered and then their credit card machine was down and asking for cash only. Not once did the manager apologize or our server offer to make it right. Atmosphere is cramped and dimly lit. There is a mariachi band that will play the same songs for each table in the same row. And last but not least the margaritas that they have on special are pretty watered down and the portion is small. Next time I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Oh how we love this place --- everyone is so extremely friendly there and makes us feel immediately at home. How we enjoy going there on Fridays for some good eats and finish it off with a shot of Riazul (or two or three). That cilantro soup is to die for...I cant get enough of it - crazy green soup. Owners and staff are doing a FABULOUS job - cant wait until it warms up and we can start sitting on the patio again. Gonna have to go there some time later at night and kick back with the servers and have a few drinks. Anyone who gives this place less than a four star rating just doesnt know how to enjoy a simple restaurant with GREAT food and a wait staff that is irreplaceable. Oh and if you havent sat through a few plays with the M&M gents, well you guys dont know what your missing - makes me want to run down to Mexico and start dancing up a storm .... Mucho gracias Tapalpa - Victoria and Marcus

We searched this place on the Internet and was looking forward to it. The ambience was great and the owner/server was super friendly. But the food was so-so except for the chicken noodle soup that came with lunch. We munched them away, but even the chips and salsa was just ok, not that great. We ordered fajita, enchilada with homemade mole, and shrimp quesadia and two tacos with kids order of quesadia and none of them were exciting. Just ok. My son who loves Mexican food tried their street taco and didnt finish the rest two of them. He had two authentic Mexican tacos from his friends birthday party yesterday.

This is my familys favorite Mexican restaurant. We eat in and carry out equally and usually have tacos al pastor, burrito suizo, carnitas (on Thursday) or a tapalpa salad. There salsa is also outstanding. Everything is delicious and reasonably priced. I go without the family, but with a girlfriend during the summer months after seeing a movie and she just loves their carne chihuahua, very tender meat and good flavor. Of course, all the staff are extremely nice and friendly, but a shout out to Gustavo who usually has to wait on crazies like us. Thanks Tapalpa for making our dining experience such a pleasure.

Weve been going to this restaurant for 10 years and it never disappoints. The Wednesday special Pica-Pica is a must-try. The staples - enchiladas, tacos, chile rellenos, burritos, etc, dont disappoint. The standard margarita is the best anywhere, and there are a lot of fun flavors for those who dont like the standard. Live music on the weekends and a nice outdoor patio make for a great weekend dinner. Great value for portion size on many of the dishes, like the arroz con pollo. We go often enough that we can see were not the only regulars, which is the sign of a solid restaurant.

Went here for lunch we were seated promptly, but service was very slow. When I say very slow I mean we got our food about 40 minutes later. It took about twenty minutes to order. The food overall was ok, not the greatest. Under staffed two guys were running around trying to service the while restaurant. Service was poor, food was ok, world we return, all of us said no. We did hear that couple of waitresses abd bus boys did not show up. A friend at take asked for hot sauce, it never came. Feel sorry for them but service was still bad.

There are certain places that can win you over with good service if the food is mediocre... this isnt one of those places. The waiter was nice but oh so forgetful.. the typical chips and salsa were boring and without flavor and the food which were simple tacos were not appetizing at all. I have never drank so much soda to wash down the food ever. I see the ratings on here and I dont get it... I see the mention of liquor specials which I did see plastered all around but if you must have liquor to enjoy the food its not the place for me.

This is NOT real Mexican food. My husband and I went here for dinner and I could not believe what I had been served. Most of the food tasted like they got it in the frozen section of Jewel. Even the Horchata was not authentic in any way. I have no idea why the place is always so crowded. The food is nearly disgusting. But I can tell you one thing I did notice when I ate there, there were no Mexicans eating there. I know why. If you want real Mexican food, I suggest Mias Cantina in Mount Prospect.

This is an excellent restuarant in many ways. My wife and I have been going to Tapalpa, at least weekly, for more than five years. Most importantly, weve always had a wonderful experience with both food, drinks, and service. Tapalpa has become our "Cheers" on Fridays where everyone really does know our names. If you want authentic Mexican cuisine or simply a great Margarita, you have to go to Tapalpa.
