“Take The Chance you’ve been considering” -a fortune in a cookie Whether you are looking for a date spot, a lunch out with friends or a family restaurant, the Gourmet House is the place to go, if you are looking for delicious Chinese food. If you prefer to stay in, the Gourmet House also does take out and is now introducing delivery. This affordable restaurant has been in business for 14 years. It’s conveniently located on Algonquin Road in Algonquin, Illinois. The restaurant is very open with lots of windows for natural lighting and has a beautiful bar. It’s casual enough for a dinner or lunch with kids, but is also a nice location for a date. The food is great, and so is the service! Not only was our waitress nice, but the owner, Rebecca even stopped by our table to say hi and make sure that everything was ok. Our soup, with steam rising from the dish appeared shortly after we ordered the lunch special only $7.00 for our noodle dishes (the price is $6.95 for non-noodle dishes.) The extensive lunch menu has many options for all kinds of taste buds. This list includes sweet, spicy, chicken, beef, seafood, noodles or rice dishes. The hot and sour soup is full of flavor and has a bit a of spicy kick. It is an egg based soup with bamboo shoots, onions and peppers. For the less adventurous, the lunch special has not only the option of this Hot and Sour soup, but offers Egg Drop as well. Soon after the soup was finished our main course came. I had one of my favorite dishes, Beef Ho Fun. I love the mix of the soft big noodles, the crunch from the pea pods and sprouts, the flavor of the grilled onions and the tasty beef. Also ordered at our table was the main dish: Singapore Noodles. Different from my thick noodles, this dish has nice thin noodles. These thin noodles are mixed with eggs, shredded carrots, shrimp and chicken topped in a delicious yellow curry sauce. The lunch special also comes with an egg roll. The outside of the egg roll is a strong yet soft wrapper that has the right amount of crunch that leads to the blast of flavor inside. To end the meal, chocolate fortune cookies arrive with the check. Our whole party left full, satisfied, and with a smile on our face. As we exit out the door with a rooster picture hanging on the window in celebration of the Chinese New Year the wise words of a delightful cookie on our mind,“Take The Chance That You’ve been considering.”

The food was by no means bad; nor was it extraordinarily good, or memorable. I live out of town, drive by the place in transit - nice exterior- Ive always wanted to try the food- I love Asian (Thai, Chinese, Japanese) food. So I gave it a shot. Our waitress was very kind and attentive, and one of the finer aspects of the restaurant. The beef was very low quality, and highly tenderized. The rice was extremely low quality, and not fresh. Chicken was fine, but not strongly flavored, and the size of meat pieces (both beef and chicken) was fairly large. Vegetables were actually very fresh, and nicely cooked. Water tasted odd - I recommend soda. Prices were reasonable - neither exorbitant nor cheap. This restaurant had a strong Cantonese influence (thick gravy, corn starch based) ; I prefer Mandarin (just my personal preference). Given the number of other local Chinese restaurants in this area, Id probably not return. But if you like Cantonese Chinese, you may like this restaurant.

Not sure what that other reviewer is referring to. Anyway - Gourmet House is located in between a shuttered Wendys and a used car dealership. It used to a be frozen custard place. There are 3 outstanding things about this place: 1. They have plump, juicy shrimp. The best of any Chinese restaurant in the area. 2. Their quality is always consistently decent. It is not a crap shoot. 3. They have a drive-thru window!!!!!!!! How cool is it that? If you are like me and drive home on Algonquin Road (the nightmare) each night, do yourself a favor and add their phone number to your address book. Call 10 to 15 mintues away and pull up to their drive-thru. And bam...good Chinese food in an instant. The staff is always friendly.

I ordered from them often getting delivery each time. On my last order, they told me I had to order a large entree instead of a small or they wouldnt deliver and I had to come pick up at the drive through. They decided to deliver anyway because I argued that I ordered the same order dozens of times without a problem and got delivery. They took over an hour to deliver my food ( in my opinion on purpose). Theres millions of places to order Chinese. Customer service matters and u just lost what was a loyal customer. Btw, its been an hour and 10 minutes for an egg drop soup and regular order of orange chicken. Still waiting...

I seriously cannot believe it took us this long to discover this place! BEST CHINESE FOOD IN ALGONQUIN, LAKE IN THE HILLS, AND CRYSTAL LAKE, HANDS DOWN! And believe me, weve tried so many others! I can recommend the orange chicken, generals chicken, egg rolls, dumplings, honey walnut shrimp, and the BBQ pork fried rice. Excellent food. The small portions are big enough for 2 adults to share, especially if you add on an appetizer. The prices are family friendly, and delivery is at my door within 20 minutes! We cant wait to try more items on the menu!

This was our go-to for Chinese a few years back when we lived in the NW suburbs. Recently stopped by for their lunch specials while in the area. Their hot tea appears to have changed to a different brand which we didnt like as much as remembered. Favorite items have always been the Honey Walnut Chicken and Orange Beef. We decided that wed still frequent if we lived nearby but its not worth driving an hour out of our way just to come here.

I used to live in Chicago and gourmet house definitely stacks up well against them. Only complaint I have is even when I ask for spicy dish to be made very spicy neither my wife or I find it remotely spicy ( mild at best). Other than that all dishes I ordered tasted fresh and full of flavor. We really liked honey walnut chicken and fire cracker chicken (very unique sweet and citrus sauce that we both loved). Would definitely come back.

We have been going here for many years and weve never had a bad tasting dish. They are consistent with their quality and every thing tastes really delicious and Authentic. My only complaint is that there have been a couple times when they gave me less chicken than the previous times and I feel they should measure or weigh to make sure that they are giving a consistent amount.

Best Chinese food around! Nice place to eat inside too. Family loves the potstickers. Theyre big and taste homemade. I like the Mongolian beef, husband likes garlic chicken. The staff know us and what we order even if it has been months. No more expensive than other places. Why not get better food and nicer table?
