Dixie Crossroads - truly mediocre Having recently moved to Florida, husband and I were eager to sample the local seafood restaurants. One of those that had been mentioned was Dixie Crossroads. We decided to give it a try on Friday night. Expecting big crowds, we called and made reservations for 6pm. When we arrived, we were surprised that there was no wait and plenty of empty tables. The place was 2/3 full with what appeared to be tourists rather than locals. Having done our research online, we noticed that the reviews ranged from “truly great” to “truly mediocre”. We were skeptical and wanted to make up our own minds, so we made a list of certain dishes that we were told we just had to try. The waitress took our order and returned with a basket of Hush Puppies dusted with powder sugar. Not too greasy and nice to munch on while waiting for our meal, but nothing special. We started our meal with a bowl of the clam chowder. The soup arrived hot, with two packages of oysters crackers, but was no better or worse than the clam chowder we had at any other restaurant. There was very few recognizable clam pieces and the soup tasted more like a potato soup. For the entrée, we tried to recommended local delicacy Rock Shrimp aka “poor man’s lobster”. The tiny shrimp (broiled as recommended) were small and without much flavor. Dunking them in the melted butter did nothing more than disguise what little taste the shrimp had. Also recommended was the sweet potato side dish. It turned out to be a plain, store bought sweet potato served with a little packet of whipped butter and another packet of a “cinnamon spread”. The cinnamon spread had little taste and neither did much to make the sweet potato into anything unusual. We finished our meal and left. In our opinion, the restaurant reviews from the locals will have more impact on our future dining plans. You would be wise to do the same.

Starting of with the good experiences. The entrance. Walking in over a walkway over water is fun for the kids. They can feed the fish and turtles and get exited. So after a poor meal the kids enjoy themselves on the way out and that compensates for a lousy experience indoor. Living in Titusville for 8 months, now it was time to go and visit one of the better looking establishments in Titusville. Coming in the first thing you notice is that its freaking cold. Should have brought a sweater or something. Than the food. Gordon Ramsey would have had a field day here. The fries are served in a cardboard box, the sirloin with rock shrimp on a tin (1960s) platter, dirty utensils wrapped in a cheap paper napkin.....all in all bad presentation. No issue if the food is great. Unfortunately not the case. Sirloin looked more like an entrecote with the amount of fat in it. Not tender at all. Must have been one of the cheaper pieces of meat from the wholesales. Rock shrimp not that special. Have had way better shrimp all over the world. Salads are more or less a bag of lettuce emptied in a bowl, drenched in dressing and some cheese on top. No creativity from the chef at all. Kids meals at 4,99 where what you pay for. Mac Donalds does a way, way, way better job. (also for the adults compared to this place) The bill added up to $ 75,00 for a $ 30,00 experience. Really not worth the time and money. We left halfway cutting our losses. Like what someone wrote before, "This place is a tourist trap!". Couldnt agree more unfortunately.

As a former resident of Titusville and regular of Dixie Crossroads under the original owners, I know this restaurant and what it was in its heyday. Its a shame that such a simple concept--perfectly cooked seafood--was lost in the sale of this establishment. After ordering my standard--2 dozen rock shrimp broiled--I was stunned when my order was tossed at me (literally--a dining companion had his thrown at him, hitting his very large glass of water which went everywhere, including our salads which had been delivered only moments before) within five minutes of ordering. I had a combination of boiled and broiled rock shrimp (very different flavors), some cold and some hot. All the fake melted butter in the world couldnt disguise this mess. The original owners also used to make shrimp bisque--really wonderful. That is now gone to be replaced by a passable clam chowder. Its okay, it doesnt knock your socks off. As for the service, no one likes their meal thrown at them. Its not as if this joint is hopping like it used to be with lines out the door. It used to be that a Friday night at 6:30, it was an easy hour to hour and a half wait for a table. The Friday night we were there, there wasnt a soul waiting when we went in, and no one waiting when we went out. Its really a shame, Dixie Crossroads was a perfect example of simple, well done food at one time. That time has sadly passed.

I hate to see some of the negative reviews, because I have never had rock shrimp as good as I get at Dixie Crossroads. I usually get by here once each year for my business. I have either eaten here or gotten take out at least 10 times over the last decade. I always make it a point to stop...sometimes I stop heading up the coast, and again as I return on the same trip! Although the salad and shrimp soup and fries are just so-so, the corn fritters are good (not as good as Pearls Elegant Pelican down in the Savannah, GA area though) and the red shrimp and rock shrimp are just wonderful. I dont know about any of the other seafood...Im here for the rockies, and if they are out of season, the reds. Thats what is great about this place...and yes, it is a bit kitschy but that is part of the charm. Oh, those of you who are locals who dont like Dixie Crossroads, tell me where you can get better rock shrimp? And Dixie Crossroads has them when others dont because they have their own boats (or an associated company does) so they get them before any other restaurant. Ive experienced this at least a couple times, my other standby (Floridas Best Seafood in Cocoa Beach) cant get the rockies, but Dixie Crossroads has them.

The cornbread hushpuppies were good. That is about the only good thing I can say about the food my husband and I were served at this restaurant tonight. I ordered half a dozen large shrimp broiled, vegetable (of the day) and soup. The soup had an over abundance of one spice, like... maybe chili powder or cayenne. It wasnt too hot (spicy) just had dry overpowering splaterring of one seasoning (not sure what it was). The shrimp were so rubbery I couldnt even pull one apart when I attempted to show my husband what it was like. The vegetable was simply steamed. Thats it. No sauce, no flavor, just steamed yellow squash and zucchini. Husband had "blackened" grouper, the small 6 oz. serving, that was anything but blackened. They sprinkled maybe some blackened seasoning on it, barely broiled it, and threw it on a plate with some rice, for $18.99. Best way to describe our dining experience is very, very dissapointing. Such a shame, this used to be a great place to go and get a real nice meal.
