In a what has become a world of "gastropubs" and hoity-toity burger joints that like to throw a slab of Foie Gras on a burger and call it "gourmet" its refreshing to find a place that just revels in good food. The Burger Freak is a tiny little burger shack nestled in the corner of non-descript strip mall in North Oakland Park. Its so non-descript that it took two tries to find it, I almost went to Chilis. Boy, am I glad I didnt. From the outside it looks a little shady, inside its not that much of a beauty. There is a small window ledge counter and a few tiny bistro tables with cheap folding chairs. Décor leans toward sideshow chic meets college dorm. Of course, one doesnt come here for a romantic dinner, you want some grub. And grub you shall have, in abundance. The menu swings from simple basic burgers and dogs, to more adventurous offerings most for under $10. On this our first outing we decided to play it safe. I had the Bleu Cyclops Burger with a small side of fires, my dining companion went with a pair of dogs: Da Chicago and the New Yorker. It should be noted that The Burger Freak is a counter service restaurant, there is no pretention, in fact everything is served in a brown paper bag and waxed paper. It kind of reminds me of the local burger dive I went to growing up, SCORE! The Bleu Cyclops is their take on a bacon bleu cheese burger. Very simple with a good handful of crispy bacon crumbles, a healthy dose of bleu cheese and topped with a somewhat spicy jalapeno ranch sauce. All atop a buttery brioche bun. Well the burger was good, really good. It was juicy, messy, and just what a burger should be. The small side of fries were extremely crispy and flavorful. If this was a small side I would hate to see large one. It was a mound of fries larger than the burger itself! Lets be honest a hot bog on a bun really is just a vehicle for luscious toppings. Of course you want a good bun and a tasty dog, but if the toppings fall flat the whole thing goes to the dog house (Im looking at you, unnamed hot dog stand on Sunrise). A Chicago Dog is topped with hot peppers and the pepper relish and this one was spot on! Reminded me of the Wrigley Field. Speaking of traveling, we must have jumped over to Lincoln Center because the New York dog was dripping with caramelized onions and sauerkraut . To use a baseball-ism, these were both out of the park home runs. The Beer Battered Onion Rings were perhaps the best weve tasted in a long time. Both the fries and the rings were served with what was called Freak Sauce. Not sure what it was, but it was freakishly addictive. As if all this wasnt enough, we had to try the Fried Oreos, hush - I went to the gym after. These little Oreo stuffed beignets are downright addictive. I love Oreos, but this may have made them better (thank you State Fair of Texas for introducing this little idea to the world). Dusted with a generous dose of powdered sugar thankfully they only come 3 to an order. The Burger Freak isnt pretty, it doesnt have 50 beers on tap it doesnt have the Las Olas glitterati, but what it does have is a damn good burger and a VERY friendly staff all for what you would what you would pay at the golden arches. Repeat after me: Its good to be a freak

This is my first time writing a review for a restaurant. I rather not cost a place their business but there were so many things wrong here that I rather save someone their money and time. My husband and I went here for the first time today and decided to go with the build your own option. We both ordered what we usually get at other burger places. We were completely dissatisfied with the quality and taste of the entire meal. For starters the burgers not only looked but tasted like a public school burger. The bun was very cheap tasting and the ingredients were so blah. The fries had no flavor or salt. We are not fast food fans but the fries at Wendys, McDonalds, and Burger King are a whole lot better. I went with Dr Pepper from the soda machine and when I tried pouring it into my cup mostly only water came out. My drink tasted like water and looked lighter than iced tea. (It couldve just ran out of Dr. Pepper but I am pointing out everything) The cashier was rude and impatient with our questions. He seemed to be bothered by the fact that we were even there. I can somewhat understand his frustration since we came 20 minutes before closing but I dont think its all right for him to make it that obvious because technically theyre still open. Their one size cup (looks like a regular small/medium cup) for the soda machine costs $4.25 each. The total for the two burgers, the two side of fries and two drinks was close to $25, for that price I rather eat at Burger Fi or Five Guys.

Tried to order online, but it kept trying to transmit, mind you it was after lunch rush hour, around 2:45PM. Called the store, they said to keep trying (we had been trying for 15 minutes) for another 5 minutes. At 3:15 we called back, apparently they couldnt get their system back up, placed order on the phone. Food arrived at 4:30PM (we are less than 1 mile away from the store), and when it did arrive it was cold, and part of the order was missing. The driver was unhappy that he possibly would need to come back, so instead called and asked them to credit the credit card, to which they said they would instead give us credited items in the future. Not to mention when we did call we were given a not so friendly greeting, but instead seemed as if we were a nuisance for calling to find out status of our order and to let them know our order was not correct. BOOOO. Not a happy customer, was hoping for way better service than this.

A hidden gem. Great burgers, weird burgers, all kinds of interesting stuff. The line cook has an issue with undercooking everything but other than that its actually quite good. Food poisoning only hurts the first day - afterwards theres nothing left and its bearable. During the meal, however, the food tastes quite nice and there are many interesting combinations to try. I strongly recommend the chicken and waffles sandwich/burger. Not only does it taste great but the chicken is very fried so theres less opportunity to spend several days hugging your toilet and praying for death. Would I recommend this place? Actually yes. Despite my somewhat complicated experience with it I think theres a lot to the culinary offerings and maybe it was just that one day. Once I recover a little Im sure Ill try it again, and hopefully itll be every bit as good as I remember without the horrible aftermath.

Ordered food at 5:45pm with an ETA of 6:45. I called when they were ten minutes late and was told they were running behind and I would have my food in less than 20. At 7:20 (25 minutes later) they told us they had just left with it and we would have it in less than ten minutes. called back at 7:40 and was told again it just left. I asked them to call the driver and ask where he was and the girl laughed like it was a joke and put me on hold for 5 minutes. At this point we had already left the house and were headed to Taco Bell. The driver called 10 minutes later and said he was three minutes away... good luck staying in business with shitty ass service like this. Dont even know what the food tastes like but no meal is worth an over 2 hour wait!!!!
