We arrived at 8:30pm on a Thursday night to a somewhat empty restaurant. Knowing they were a James Beard recipient I had high expectations and was looking forward to a night out with friends. The hostess, who is also the owner, led us to our table without a greeting or a smile. Nevertheless, we ordered a bottle of wine and cheese plate from our equally unenthusiastic waiter. After placing our order (the halibut which arrived that day from Alaska!) we were told that the chef, also the owner, gets "crabby" in 45 minutes. Oh? Do you feel welcome yet? Ten minutes later he returned to say they were out of halibut. We asked for our check, told the staff we were disappointed and drove the 30 minutes back to New Smyrna to eat at Spanish River Grill - another James Beard award winning restaurant. There at nearly 10:00pm we arrived to hugs, delicious food and decor that wasnt purchased at Kirklands. My advice, drive the distance. Its worth it!

Almost didnt go to this restaurant because of its responses to the negative feedback. So glad we decided to eat dinner at Cress as this was our first dining experience in DeLand since moving here. From the ambiance, the intimacy, the flavors, the staff...everything was amazing. Our waiter, Justin was incredible and well educated with their menu. The restaurant itself is small and intimate. Cant wait to go back again and again to try everything on their menu. We had the meat sampler for the appetizer, the halibut and wagyu steak for the main course, and the Belgian chocolate mousse for dessert. Everything was gorgeous and cooked to perfection. Absolutely nothing to complain about.

Cress? More like cress-fallen! We really wanted to try this award winning restaurant, so when we arrived to an almost empty restaurant (12 people) and were not warmly greeted by the ice cold hostess (also one of the owners) we were off to a bad start. Our server was disappointing - apparently he just came back from Portugal (who cares?) and was unfamiliar with what was available to eat or drink. The chef (the other owner) tried to come out and save the day but it was too late (apparently he gets grumpy late at night according to our server). James Beard Award Winner? How is this possible with such disappointing service? Will not be returning anytime soon.

My husband had wanted to eat at Cress for a very long time. However, he was ill and we could never seem to be able to make a reservation when he felt like going. Happily, we were able to make a reservation for New Years Eve 2013 and we had a great time. The food was delicious and the service was wonderful. This evening became a favorite memory for us and now for me as my husband passed away in June. You cant go wrong dining here. I have read some of the reviews that werent so good but they have the restaurant confused with another with a similar sounding name. Cress is first class. None better. Linda Hopkinson

This is a beautifully quaint restaurant with wonderful ambiance! We were greeted right away with a warm smile and our waiter was at our table almost immediately after we sat down. My boyfriend and I ordered the Pork Belly as an appetizer, this was the absolute BEST Pork Belly I have ever had, words cannot describe it. I ordered the Curry Chicken and that too was absolutely amazing. The owners and staff are extremely dedicated to making sure that you enjoyed what you had and were so patient in explaining the different food options. This will not be our last time visiting Cress, it is truly a fantastic restaurant!

Either the owners have a ton of money and this is s hobby or they will go broke running a restaurant this way. Was greeted with a frown and not even a hello. Was seated and was ignored for the first 20 minutes, then had to ask for a server and was told JUST TO WAIT AND SOMEONE WOULD BE THERE. Another 15 minutes went by and finally. we placed our drink order. After 55 minutes finally. We had our ice water. Then another 15 MIN AND WE LEFT. I would not recommend this place for food but would if you like to be ignored and have a nasty waitress to deal with

Me and my wife were so excited to try out this restaurant when it first opened but never made it there till last month. Was I surprised, the standards must have really dropped because we were rudely shown our table (there were many open). Come to find out later it was a hostess/Owner that was so rude to us. We just walked out. Food may be great but we didnt feel like it was worth being treated like dirt to try it. I dont think she even noticed us leaving. PASS

After waiting 2 days for a call back about my reservation, and a very unfriendly experience on the phone with the owner, I wrote her a very polite email expressing surprise about her tone, especially given that we would be first time diners. The Owner called my home at 7:30 in the morning next day, literally screaming and verbally abusing me. This was the most stunning, horrifying and unprofessional experience Ive ever had in 40 years.

Wonderful staff and great friendly casual service. The chef - Hari Pulapaka is fabulous and is a master of spice and bold flavors. The wine list is extensive from nice simple house wines to a beautiful Jarvis. Seasonal menu that changes. Currently the carrots & beets course is to die for and the herb crusted fish of the days is Golden Tile from Port Orange. This is a place to relax, eat, wine, and enjoy our friends.

Food was absolute perfection. Aside from that, their purpose is equally impressive. Taking it beyond food and making a difference in the world. Knowing where your food comes from and the positive impact it has on this world makes the whole dining experience refreshing and pleasent. Not just a place trying to make a dollar but a place trying to make a difference. Absolutely love Cress for more reasons than one.

Its a shame some silly wrongly-made reviews have dragged the rating down on this gorgeous one-of-a-kind restaurant. I have dined at Cress many times. I have traveled to many cities and states, and by far Cress makes the top of the list. We are so lucky they dont charge what theyre worth. The Pulapakas are the best people around and crazy intelligent! Their vision is an inspiration. Hungry for my next visit.

This is an incredible restaurant. Ate here last night with a friend and had a great meal. The food was well prepared and everything was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend this place. They have a chefs table (hopefully next time Ill get to do this). Great wine list. Good attentive service. They use locally sourced ingredients. I use to be a chef...I would love to work at this place just for fun.

Of course, always the best. I love to treat my staff here for meeting. Something for everyone to choose from. The menu is global with refined touches. Seafood and the Wild Game are my staffs favorite options. I love the grains salad and the vegetarian composition - rockin bold flavors. Great from the small plates to desserts. Comfortable seating for group meetings.

Best meal and experience Ive had in a long time!! Truly a treasure in this quaint college town. Worth the stop off of I-4 just for this restaurant!! Must go!! The owner/chef is true genius. The best Chicken Tikka Masala Ive had since India, and the Wagyu Ribeye was cooked to perfection with some of the most delicious sauce Ive ever had.
