Went there with a few friends, we were attending a conference, with high expectations of a good Irish pub and Irish music. The half-hour wait wasnt too bad, it was a Saturday night, the Guinness I ordered at the bar took a long time to pull but still okay. Finally seated and our waitress, Kathleen, ruined any good that could have happened that night. She was annoyed when I asked her to check on ingredients for the dinner roll and later for the "in-house pies." I have a life threatening allergy and I dont care where the roll came from just check the ingredient list on the wrapper! The in-house pies were also made with eggs, or so she said. A friend ordered the blueberry pie and said it tasted like a pop tart! Kathleen never asked how our meals were, never refilled my water glass, never asked if the rest of us would like coffee when one person ordered a coffee. We asked her to split our checks since we were all there from different companies and she added 18% gratuity without advising us and we were only a party of 5! Upon looking at my detailed receipt this morning she charged me for a coffee I never ordered or received! Ive been to Ireland and many Irish pubs there (despite what the website claims THE DUBLINER is not like the pubs in Ireland) and stateside. In Ireland, the waitresses care about the customer. The decor was shabby in an attempt to look rustic. The music, which we could barely hear but not Irish music, was not worth waiting for. Overall, a great disappoint. Take this one off your list and find a better pub in DC---Im sure there are others. The Irish Times is right next door though I havent been there yet.

First, a story. My first visit to DC was in 95 or 96. I came to visit a a friend who lived near DC. One day we came into the city and visited the Capital Building - when you could take pictures while sitting on the steps! - then had lunch at a nearby Irish pub. Great place, and I have a picture of me in front of it. Tonight, for this convention there is the host hotel and two overflow hotels. One has an Irish Pub. This is where we ate tonight. Its the same place from nearly 20 years ago! I didnt even know until I sat down. Twenty years later it is as good as I remember it. I had fish and chips and it was awesome! The smoked salmon was excellent and served with a few slices of bread and come capers. The staff was friendly and greeted us as soon as we arrived. My friend had the onion soup started and said it was some of the best he ever had. We went to breakfast there the next morning, and this is where they kind of dont excel (to be clear this was breakfast, and not brunch). But it was good enough to start our day off right. The Dubliner is a DC institution and had earned its spot in the city. Make a plan to go there the next time you are in the city. It isnt fine dining, but it is good pub food. And see if you can find the picture of Tip ONeil in the dining room!

I love a good irish pub and beef n potatoes kind of meals, so this place should have been right up my alley. I ordered shepherds pie and was sadly disappointed. This is a relatively easy dish to make; I was expecting some nice bits of beef; instead what I got was what looks like Beneful dog food. The meat was grainy and of taco bell consistency; the vegetables were sparse; the stewy broth was extremely salty and did not cover up the crap meat (and I love salt, so this is big for me to say it is too salty). To top it off, my one draught beer was $6.50. And it wasnt a WOW beer, either. I had average expectations for this meal and they did not even meet those. Had I not been with friends, I would have requested a replacement meal (I would hope they could handle a sandwich, it is pretty hard to screw those up). I do not recommend this restaurant, unless you just want to get hammered on boring beer that is way too expensive.

My boyfriend and I ate here for dinner and sadly we were slightly disappointed. I had the shepherds pie and I was hoping to taste the lamb, but all it tasted like was beef stew with mashed potatoes on top. It tasted okay, but I thought it would have more flavor and the potatoes were bland. My boyfriend ordered the guiness burger and he wasnt thrilled. It was just a burger patty on a plate with fried onion strings piled on top. However even though that wasnt what he expected it did have good flavor to it. For our appetizer we had the potato skins and those were delicious. I could eat those all day long. If anyone goes Id definitely suggest that. The only other issue I had was that our waitress was not personable and it seemed like we waited a long time for one to show up to our table and it wasnt even busy :(

The Dubliner is a large irish pub generally full of tourists on their way from Union Station. In general, I have no real complaints -- staff is decent, beers are standard, food is cheap (under $15 mostly); Its an overall family friendly location. Honestly my only problem is nothing truly stuck out here that makes me want to recommend visiting this place to a friend. Happy hour serves 4 dollar amber ales so thats a draw if you are popping out of the station between 4-7... The chicken pot pie was decent though... If you are in town and dont want to eat at the fast food placed in Union Station -- I would recommend crossing the street to the dubliner for a quick bite and drink. If you are a local -- go to RFD

Sean, I am sorry that you had a bad day there recently, but I can not disagree with your assessment any louder. The Dubliner is an authentic Irish bar in the heart of Washington DC. I have been going there for 25 years, and have not had a bad meal. To go there and expect service like the Ritz is silly - Its an Irish pub - where you wait for the Guiness, and savor the atmosphere. We take friends and family to the Dubliner when they are in town. I dont mind the bad review, as the idiots that will read it and stay away just leaves a small fraction of more space for me and my family, on St. Pats that will be appreciated. God Bless.

My party had dinner here the other night -- waited at the bar and had Guinnesses til a table in the back dining room was ready. The service was good, though as some have noted the servers here have little to no personality. So what? WE had enough for the whole room, and we had a wonderful time. The fish and chips were rated best ever by one companion, and my Irish beef stew was the most delicious Ive ever tasted. The atmosphere was as comfy, cozy and pubby as you could desire. Very Irish. The thing to do is to have a shot of Jamesons with your Guinness as you eat dinner. Heavenly.
