Thankfully this isnt a highly known little pub yet but its getting more popular by the minute. Its a small English dive (does that exist?) in the basement of the U street area. When you walk in youll see the right wall plastered with tons and tons of of chalk signatures and statements. They promote the writing on the walls and you can find chalk spread all over. The roof also has writing on it. Last time I was there I saw my kind friends remarks of "Blake is a p---y" still on the ceiling. The thing is, the ceiling can only be written on during slow moments. You have to time it right. If you see me still up there, tag me on G+ with its photo! The other thing you want to do there is not for the faint of heart. You will notice to the top left of the wall behind the bar the sign says "only bar in dc to server Peruvian Bear F***ers." What you wanna do is order one and just chug it instantly. Ignore the fact that it contains OJ and beer in a mixture and just enjoy it. It is surprisingly good. I didnt even make a whiskey face! Im a real man...?...! The food deserves its own mention too. The fish and chips are pretty damn good and arent THAT pricey but it can be a little much for some fried fish. Drinks are priced fairly well for the DC area, though, and you can have a good night for under a bagillion yen. Ive met very interesting people here multiple times. Once there were these French dudes on holiday and then we met a Swiss couple also on holiday. Not sure why they choose this place over others but it always involves awesome conversation when you have these kinds of run ins. END OF STORY. PS - Bathrooms are nice.

I am so unbelievably disappointed in this place. I went to DC with my brother last Saturday and we went to Codmother because weve heard from many people of how inexpensive it is. I bought one drink for myself and then another drink for my brother.I honestly had a good time there until the about 2 days later when i checked my bank account and realized they STOLE MY CREDIT CARD INFROMATION! I am beyond pissed off. My credit card statement had 2 double charges on it( my card was charged 4 times in total). I called my bank and they said that my credit card infromation was used again on Sunday which surely was NOT me because by Sunday I was out of town to RI. I am beyond livid at this place! This is absolutely ridiculous that they think they could double charge an account without customers finding out about it. This is called CREDIT CARD FRAUD IT IS A CRIME! Whichever bartender decided that they could get away with this is disgusting. I cant even imagine how many other people they have stolen money from. I urge anyone who goes here to be careful and check their bank accounts.

Man, I love Codmother. I just dont have a single negative thing to say about it, except that sometimes it gets so packed that I cant enjoy it. Its in a basement, so it feels overwhelmingly crowded fairly quickly, & on a weekend night - especially in nice weather - that happens easily. Codmother is your standard chalk-on-the-walls, fish-and-chips-in-a-basket, PBR-in-a-can kind of joint. The servers are friendly but not overly so, attentive but still a little bit surly. The clientele is professional hipster (yuppies, I guess), mostly a good-natured crowd, & you can usually end up in some sort of sports or politics or pop culture banter with strangers, if you so desire. But then itll get too busy. And youll feel like youre going to be crushed under the weight of the crowd. And youll have to leave. And youll be disappointed about it, because when its not jam-packed, Codmother really, really rocks.

A little bit divier than it was when it opened, I worry Ill lean back in a decrepit chair and end up on the floor as it falls to bits behind me. Fish and chips are sometimes bit and miss but drenching everything with malt vinegar often saves the day. I miss the punk soundtrack of old as the place usually has the TV loudly going. Solid middle of the road ratings a for a place thats middle of the road.

Nice spot for drinks on a Friday or Saturday night. What they lack in space and seating (and beer selection) they make up for in funk (that is to say, if you were born in the late 80s-early 90s you will really appreciate the song selections). That said, if you have a big group of friends you should try to get here early to get a spot, otherwise its easy to just drift in and grab a quick drink.

This bar has been a favorite of mine. The bartenders are the best. Every bartender has been amazing and great to talk to. This is a "divey" bar some would say. Its underneath another bar and is easy to miss. The drinks are a little pricy but they have some good deals. I love that you can write on the walls with chalk. This place is a lot of fun!

Place was quiet when we entered around six on a Friday, so at that time it was great for talking. Had to get their fish and chips (which was excellent), and I was pleased to get a Genny cream ale, even if it isnt the pinnacle of beers. Its a small bar and the fish and chips are awesome. I love a wider beer selection, and this was satisfactory.

Went during the week and got fish and chips which were delicious but the bar smelled like urine. Went back during the weekend and as soon as I stepped in got hit with an aroma of feces and vomit. Sanitation is not a priority. Great tunes, though.

Dont go here. Im a 25 year old with a legal ID, and the bouncer insisted my ID was fake. I asked him to show it to a cop if he didnt believe me. He bent it, stared at it, and told me to leave. Avoid this dump.

One and done sort of a deal. Chalk on the walls and a non-stop 90s playlist on repeat make for a decent final offering to the night. Wear shoes that you dont mind getting wet.

Beer selection isnt that great and is kind of expensive for what you get. Fun place though. I didnt get a chance to have the fried fish but it looked good

Too many people are reviewing this. I want it to be popular because its heaven on earth, bit I dont want it to be popular because I hate other people.

This is a great bar early, but gets packed with young fraternity types later on weekends. The fish and chips are great and the beer is cheap for DC.

College dive bar for sure so you cant be too critical. They serve the drinks quick and the crowd is very lively.

90s music ,great atmosphere, good price for drinks.Define yourself with your dance. No judges but great crowd.

Smacks of being a faked dive bar. Staff are utterly uninterested in anything but their side deals

Great atmosphere. A no frills, fun spot to hang out, get a drink and have great conversation

Probably the whitest bar in D.C., if you like alanis morissette then this is your thing.
