No idea where the people with the negative reviews went, but it must have been another place. The Sushi Aoi is located at the corner of New York Ave and 11th Street, slightly hidden behind another empty place. Coming along New York Ave I almost missed it. I went there in mid August 2009 for lunch. Entered the place shortly five to twelve, and got a set at the Sushi bar which was fun because I could witness the meditative work of two talented Sushi chefs, an old man and a young woman both from Japan. Being there shortly before twelve is essential because shortly after the place is buzzing with people having lunch there. To make it short, the lunch was flawless, I went for various Nigiri Suhi (yellow fin, salmon and squid) and a california roll maki sushi, which they complimented with another six of another variety for free. My neighbors both took a fixed lunch menue, one with Sushi only, one with Sushi plus Sashimi - both were very satisfied. The seefood was extremely fresh and the service, in contrast to other remarks that Ive read, friendly to neutral, but in any case very efficient. Highly recommended!

By far the worst japanese food Ive ever had. To start with the miso soup was salty and tasteless. My boyfriend got the chicken katsu...over cooked and over fried. He also ordered fried squid appetizer which never came...the waitress informed us after we had our main courses that apparently there was no squid...we had to ask why it never came. I got the vegetable Tempura udon..it was just noodles in water with seaweed...no vegetables. The so called vegetable tempura was a soggy greasy mess of fried dough with barely anything inside. The worst part was the service. Other than not being informed that our appetizer didnt exist it was impossible to get the waitress, impossible to pay, and my food was brought out 10 mins before my boyfriends. The only slightly redeeming thing was that the drinks were not bad.

Before my first time eating at Sushi AOI, I went there for happy hours twice. Both visits had a great time getting sake and beer (no food). My first time eating there was on 12/18/14, I got a California Roll and two salmon nigiri. For 4 days Ive been going in and out of the restroom constantly. I know that with Sushi there is always a possibility of getting food poising but this is the first time its happened to me. I also worked in a Sushi Restaurant all throughout college, ate there often, and never got food poisoning. It will be tough for me to go and trust that the food is fresh after my initial visit but everyone else seems to enjoy it and I do enjoy their happy hour, so Im leaving a 2 star review.

I dont know how to rate minus stars or I would rate it minus 5. If youre not familiar with sushi and only the drinks speak to you then go there. I was happy to see blue fin Toro on the menu and disjointed that it was extremely cold and hard to chew on which no Toro would ever be. The yellow tail sashimi was decent but like the Toro it was cut wrong and thick. The rolls were just as disappointing with very little variety and we couldnt even get a decent spicy yellow tail roll. It was cut pieces of yellowtail surrounded by rice. Disappointed is not even the correct word.

This isnt a premium sushi spot by any means, but its more than serviceable. Prices arent too out of line for the area, and happy hour cocktails and beers are well priced (though food selection is wan, with frozen calamari and skimpy rolls). If youre looking for quality sushi, you might want to look elsewhere (its not something DC is known for anyways). But for a lunch time meal or happy hour with friends after work, this place is a good option.

Very quaint establishment that mirrors the traditional Japanese food house. Great prices for very fresh cuisine. Impeccable, polite service. Arrived for lunch at 2:10 (closing at 2:30) and they were happy to seat us. They were very patient and polite, and we ended up staying until almost 3:00. Disregard the disgruntled reviewers--unless you are into the modern yet untraditional Benihana and Shogun chains.

Sushi Aoi is one of my favorite Sushi bars / restaurants in downtown DC. The food always tastes fantastic and the staff are always extremely welcoming and accommodating. The menu has some interesting and different options for a sushi bar but, I believe, that adds to the appeal. The taste is always exquisite and I enjoy happy hours and dining experiences at the restaurant.

A unique location in the former Greyhound terminal betrays subpar service, mediocre food, and high prices. Extremely limited gluten-free and vegetarian options. Happy hour prices require a pricy two-drink minimum, negating any savings. Best part is enjoying the art deco architecture of the attached building, which you can do without enduring a dining experience here.

Sushi was "okay", but not much better. Got spicy tuna rolls and they were more of a solid hunk of tuna in the center with sauce on top than slightly mashed-up tuna with integrated sauce. Not the biggest rolls Ive ever seen either. Good price though, the rolls were $6.50 each. Kushi (about .75 miles East) was waaaaay better.

they updated their menu when they combined the two restaurants together. the sushi is a little over-priced compared to another local (and my personal favorite) sushi bar, but they are quick to get the food out to you and it is usually pretty crowded for lunch. they have outdoor seating which is nice in good weather.

The only positive thing about this place is their prices. Otherwise, the service is slow and the food is tasteless. The menue contains 6-7 kinds of very plain sushi. On top of that, they only have 2 special rolls. No BYOB. They have Wine List with $5 wines theyre selling for around $30.

I have been here many times, and the food is tasty, inexpensive, and quick. Service has always been awesome. When they ran out of an appetizer i ordered, they gave me two other things, on the house. A lot of vegetarian options, too. Best bang for your buck in this part of town.

Ive only been here for lunch and Ive never been disappointed. If you are planning to go for lunch, order the Lunch Box. It comes with a California roll, edamame, miso soup, salad and rice. From there you have your choice of entree. Oder the Tofu Steak. You can thank me later.

I love this place. I work nearby, and its one of the only places to get healthy, reasonably priced vegetarian food in the area. The service is always fantastic, whether Im doing take out (ready in minutes) or dining in (either on the run or leisurely). Highly recommend it.

This is by far the WORST japanese food I ever tasted... I order tonkatsu, which is pretty hard to mess up. The pork was over-cooked and dry. And on top of the the rice was not even cooked right and was soggy... if you are asian you know what I am talking about...

The expletive was very relaxed, the music choice was outstanding with as a nice background noise to conversations. Overall the vibe was good. The food quality was pretty good, the fatty tuna melted in my mouth. A nice mid range place with very polite service.

Excellent service. The first two things I tried to order werent even available. Finally, when I was able to find something that I wanted that they actually had, I found it to be quite bland. If I want decent Japanese food, I find myself going elsewhere.
