I will miss this place !!....I always give two chances when a restaurant does horrible; especially one I used to really like. But after two really bad experiences I have to say no way. Both Times the Hibachi was bad the fried rice was not properly done (barely fried with huge chunks of white, un-fried, un-seasoned rice) it was also horribly under seasoned. Next the steak that was with my Hibachi entree, It was char no other way to put it. I order steaks rare, but this was past beef jerky. It was also not seasoned. My vegetables were cold......That was just the food the the service was ridiculous. RUDE for one. The waitress also seemed to have no problem playing on her phone instead of getting me a THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS EATING. I even sat there with my plates and utensils stacked on top of each other pushed to the other side of the table and couldnt get my check. I finally had to stop another waitress to get it. Sorry but theres to many other places to eat in the area to deal with crap like this.

My husband and I went on a dinner date here last night. While it is a little pricier than our normal Hibachi stop, it was worth it. The food was excellent. Rice and noodles fried perfectly, steak cooked to a perfect medium, and shrimp cooked to softness, not chewy. The veggies were steamed properly, and a good portion of meat was received for our price. I also ordered a sushi roll, which was delicious. The restaurant was very clean, and the staff was very polite and kind. We did not feel rushed whatsoever. I only have a few complaints: parking at the Hoffman Center is a royal pain. Its easier to get a spot after 7 PM. While the place is really nice inside, there were some unsightly boxes against the back wall which would have been better kept in the back room. Lastly, our chef was not the most entertaining Ive had, but he was still very nice (we think he was new and just learning the ropes). Overall, it was a positive experience, and we will definitely be returning to Sumo in the future!

Only order on the website for pick up as the lunch time crowd from the govt building is intense. I had a lunch box combo tonkatsu (deep fried pork cutlets), the salad and soup were above average. The actual katsu was okay (remember that the dish is meant to be bland - IMO if you add a bit of garlic or soy to the egg wash that flavor really comes out). The California rolls were really small but did a good job as did the goyza - which was not written online and was a nice surprise. Had some tuna sashimi to compliment the meal and it was pretty good - just be prepared to get some wallet pains. The box was 10.45 while the single slab of tuna sashimi was 2.45 after tax and tip it ended up being a $18 lunch which made me honestly a bit salty. This place is busy, but serves a decent lunch as long as you are well stacked for cash. Avoid if you need to save the bank there are cheaper and better sushi bars. (yes I didnt get the habachi since that started at $14. I am broke.)

I came here with my best friend and her family for her birthday. It was a big party to which we had a reservation for. From the beginning, we experienced rushed and rude service. Because of this, two people from our party went to the bar to order drinks. After getting to the bar and ordering drinks, one of our guests received a wrong drink and in the midst of an exchange, an arguement ensued. The bartender proceeded to shove the drink across the bar, which spilled on the guest who was just standing to the side. A physical altercation broke out, the bartender proceeded to throw straws and garnishes at the two guests and police were called. To shove a drink at guest is TOTALLY unprofessional! The police were called and unfortunately, both sides have to fight ir out in court. We all cancelled our orders and the police on the scene encouraged us to tell everyone about our horrible experience here. We will never come to this place again. First and LAST!

This place has EXCELLENT sushi... and I do not say that lightly. Speciality rolls are creative and unique (and there are tons to choose from). The most bang for your buck is the "AK--47" roll. For standard rolls you have your basics, nothing to write home about, the real jem is the wide variety of basic rolls they offer. What puts this place over the top is the HAPPY HOUR specials 3-6 on weekdays. Half off drinks (which are already decently priced) it is half off all basic sushi rolls as well. Favorite, best deal happy hour in Alexandria, VA. Now for the sad parts. The hibachi is bland...but who cares, just eat sushi or they have a bunch of other dishes on the menu that are tasty. Youre better off not having shrimp and fire flung at you anyway. The service is typically awkwardly bad in the sushi seating area. It is hard to explain, nothing too major, it is just consistently "off" feeling. Have not figured out why.

I dunno why people are knocking the service here- I thought everyone was super polite, and the Japanese Bento-style lunch/dinner is bangin! 45 minutes of digging through a little treasure box of goodies followed by a 48 hour food coma. My girlfriend lived in Japan for a while and vouched that theyre pretty true to the real deal at Sumo. The presentation of the sushi was stellar as well, super artistic. Some of the hibachi guests were a little annoying, hanging out in the lobby while their party arrived and talking loud, so maybe that explains why the staff gets peeved once in a while (once again, I saw none of that, super professional.) The hibachi area and dinner area are sufficiently separated that if hibachi isnt your thing (isnt mine) you can ignore it if you want. Nice clean bathrooms too for whatever thats worth. Cant comment on the hibachi quality but Im sure its great if thats your thing. Loved this place!

The sushi were amazing n the decor for each plate was colorful and pretty.. u can taste every crunch and flavor that was in the sushi. The rice that made the sushi was not like any other that you can from the grocery store or other resturant it is not hard and does not have a bit to it. It is fresh and soft to the mouth and when you take a bit of it you can tell the chef who made the sushi did not just roll the sushi up but took his/ her time in making sure that every ingredients was just perfect that it was not mush together. I definitely had food coma by the end of the night and cant wait to go back n try their other items on the menu.

Hands down the very very best Japanese restaurant I have ever eaten in. The food is delectable and puts you into a dream state. From the Tuna Tartar to the Unagi Don, your taste buds will enjoy a taste explosion. The staff are pleasant, courteous, humorous, and over all make you feel at home. Since finding this restaurant, only a month ago, Ive become a loyal regular. I give this restaurant 10 stars even though the site will only let me give it 5. Dont take my word for it though….go on and try it for yourself and maybe Ill see you there :D
