1) bartenders are awesome, friendly, personable, and always remember us. maybe because we go too often. regardless. they are amazing. 2) red velvet walls. need we say more. 3) wings are decent, not the best but hit the spot. 4) the spot is further hit by $4 king kongs. and even after 8pm (when happy hour ends) theyre only $5. so really, win-win-win. 5) easy to get to. farragut west/north are a block away. 6) karaoke. friday night. 830. be there or be square. 7) crowded, but eclectic group of people. and finding a spot at the bar or a booth is never too hard, especially if you wait until happy hour is over. see you there :)

A great local dive bar! Dinner and a 25oz beer was a whopping $15. Im not sure why people come here and leave poor reviews if basement bars arent their thing but I assure you the atmosphere is just fine for being surrounded by bars and restaurants in the opposite category. Service was excellent and professional but what really stood out was their offer to refill my water bottle before we left. A simple gesture but anyone who pays attention to detail certainly reflects in other aspects. The only complaint is that I wont find the same quality gyro in Cincinnati without paying double the price.

I was here for a work HH a couple weeks ago. Its a smallish basement bar that is a bit cozy. There were a lot of us so we had a table. The service was a bit slow, and sometimes drinks or food even failed to arrive, prompting us to ask again. The drinks were good, but the food and appetizers were pretty plain/basic. They do have karaoke later on in the evening, but I had already left before they cranked that up. There is one pool table available, so if you get there early thats a plus.

One of the few legitimate dive bars in DC. Cheap beer, cheap drinks, questionable bar food, and no windows. Its in a basement, shared with a hotel business center. If youre looking for someplace fancy to take a date, dont come here. If youre looking to burn some hours away with some friends, its a great location. Theyve got pool and Big Buck Hunter, an internet-enabled jukebox, and host karaoke some nights as well. Saturday night hosts Spellbound DC (local goth / industrial scene).

What can you say about Recessions? Its a divey, dark bar in the basement of an office building....and its fantastic! If youre looking for a cheap bar with lots of character, diverse clientele, and a downtown location...Recessions is an amazing choice. The food and drinks are good and incredibly cheap; the Friday karaoke raucous and wonderful; the bartenders friendly and efficient. Its simply a great, under-the-radar, CHEAP bar in an otherwise pricey and pretentious neighborhood.

Love the new lunch they have setup. I have been going here for some years now for happy hours and lunch. The food and prices are great. The new lunch buffet is really good, the curry is really good with rice or bread and the price is cheap for all you can eat. I met the chef today as he was setting up the bread, really nice well dressed clean cut team they have over there. highly recommend this place for lunch and happy hour. Ask for Kazi, he makes the best drinks.

This place clearly prides itself on its lackluster, no frills atmosphere. Some people love it. I, myself, really wish they had some sort of background music on all the time instead of a pay-to-play jukebox. If you do decide to use the jukebox, beware that it will only play certain songs. I paid for six different songs and it only played three of them. I guess it just knows what it likes :]

For the price, this cant be beat. I got 3 gin and tonics and an order of onion rings, and that includes a nice tip, for 20 bucks. Happy hour pricing is nice. I was by myself, but there is a pool table if you were to bring a crew. The onion rings had almost a tempura batter on them. They were delicious with ketchup. Bar tenders were attentive. Nothing bad to say here.

Basement bar, so you have to know to expect a certain dive feel. This place accepts and embraces what they are. Cheap drinks, good food, and an eclectic mix of clientel. If you want a classy upscale bar... this isnt for you. If you want cold cheap beer and drunken karaoke, bring your friends and have a blast. Ill probably see you there.

SO much fun. If you imagine a classic dive, Recessions embodies almost all of it. Just now becoming popular with the hipster crowd, this hole in the basement bar serves its purpose well. Cheap huge beers, relatively good food (chicken fingers were great bar fodder), and an entertaining crowd. Going on karaoke night is advised!!

I secretly love Recessions. It is so perfect and cheap! On Fridays they have karaoke, which is hilarious. Really, when you want to hang out with friends and just drink, why does it matter what the bar looks like? Their appetizers are perfectly adequate, and the service is fine -- attentive, but not overly friendly or anything.

A double crown and coke (3 shots and soda) totaled $24. Maybe you pay extra for infuriatingly slow service, actually took about 10 minutes for me to get my drink, and no other drink orders were also being filled by that bartender. Save yourself the frustration and either go intoxicated or not at all.

The bartenders and servers are friendly for 1. Its a real chill environment, you dont have to worry about some crazy instance happening. Its even comfortable to go alone and you dont have to worry about some strange character hanging outside. I like it, its def my first choice bar when Im in the area

I didnt know what was waiting for us as this bar is underground and it was very very dark. Once we entered, surprise! Its a karaoke bar! Luckily, most of the singer sang really well and we really enjoyed the night. Affordable drink is another plus!

Drinks were cheap. In price AND quality. 20mins after finishing my drink I had a TERRIBLE headache. 20mins after THAT I was dead sober again! Bartender had a horrendous attitude. Geez LOUISE! Never again.

Owners are very nice, drinks are cheap for the area (especially the King Kong drafts!), and overall its a really fun afterwork or Friday night spot to hang out.

Always a good time here. The best kept secret for happy hour in DC! A nice underground hideaway good people food and drinks at a reasonable price!

Really weird place... you feel like youre in a hotel walking in, but the drink deals are the best in the area (as long as you want a mug of beer).

By far the WORST seafood meal I have ever eaten in my life. The "crab cake" was a battered, deep fried lump of crab dip you get from Safeway.

This bar has a very divey feel, being in a basement. The service is always great and the happy hour prices are generally pretty good!

A dive bar that doesnt try to be more than it is. If youre looking for a local watering hole, this is a great place for a drink.
