Despite the name, Castle was never known for their pizza, which was fine but not even as good as the average non-"chain" (Dominos, Pizza Hut etc.) pizza in Waterbury. The outside of the place looks like a weird cross between one of those themed restaurants that caters more to little kids interest in playing while their parents wait for overpriced, substandard food and a themed strip club... a visual effect which turned me off so much Id lived in Waterbury almost 10 years before I tried their food, despite hearing from several people that the food was good. And the food was indeed good, on average: some menu items were just okay, while others, like their renowned lobster-and-langostino grinder, were incredibly delicious and a great price. Or, at least, the food was good for a few years. Recently, though, there was a steep decline in service, and at around the same time, the quality of the food went down as well. As if that wasnt bad enough, Castle added injury to insult by raising prices AND reducing their portion sizes. The last straw was when I put in a large delivery order last year. (Area restaurants know me as an excellent tipper and usually take care to give me excellent service in return.) One meal was prepared with the wrong ingredients, though my friend ate it anyway as it wasnt a difference she minded. My meal, however, had several pieces of a different type of pasta and what appeared to be a piece of breaded veal (I dont eat veal) WITH A BITE OUT OF IT mixed in with the dish I had ordered. Being a long-time customer, I sent a politely-worded fax to the attention of the manager, detailing what was wrong with the food Id ordered. Unbelievably, even after I called the following afternoon to ensure the fax had been received and not misplaced, it took THREE DAYS for anyone to contact me in response. A man identifying himself as "the owners son" was bizarrely unapologetic and reluctant to offer a replacement for my meal -- even after I offered to return it for inspection and pointed out that the meal which had simply been made wrong did not need to be replaced. He claimed it was "impossible" that someone elses partly-eaten food could have wound up mixed in with my food, yet offered no possible explanation for why it looked as if that was exactly what had happened. I might have continued giving Castle business as an occasional "splurge" but I get outstanding service from so many restaurants around here that theres no reason for me to put up with disrespect. I used to look forward to having friends or family visit from out of town, so that I could take them to Castle, where the sheer variety of menu options usually ensured there would be something for everyone. Now, Im faced with the sad task of telling visitors that the restaurant they had such fond memories of eating at with me is simply no longer worth patronizing.

The reason why I am giving this restaurant a 2-star review and not the 1-star that I feel it deserves (after my recent experience) is because at the end of the day Pizza Castle undeniably serves really delicious food. However, after contacting the restaurant by phone on 12/3/14 regarding a community donation to a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization where I volunteer a lot of my time, it was to my surprise that the employee was extremely rude and eventually slammed the phone down in my face. I was literally in shock at the extreme reaction to support a community cause. Not to mention the numerous amount of families involved in my organization that frequent this restaurant. Shortly thereafter I called back and questioned the employee for her inappropriate reaction. I then explained to her the amount of years that I have patronized Pizza Castle and the least thing she could do was give me an appropriate response. Of course this was to no avail because she was unapologetic and continued to respond inappropriately. As I sit here and write this review I am baffled at what made the employee respond in a manner that she did. Nevertheless, what I can say is that I will never step foot in that restaurant. Not primarily due to the fact that they denied my community donation request. But mostly for the incredulous reaction that was displayed today. On a brighter note, I contacted Marios Pizza on Watertown Avenue. They were delighted to support my organization and did I mention very courteous. Therefore, they will be getting ALL of my business. Additionally, I will also be spreading the word within my network of families in the surrounding area.

I had just moved in and attempted to place a big order for ourselves and all the movers who helped. When I called a woman with a nasty attitude answered. I asked if I could place a delivery order, she goes "ugggghhhh" Followed by a long silence. I ask her if thats ok. She says "well its gonna be at least an hour so idk" I tell her its a pretty big order so I was already under the impression it would take awhile, she responds "what do you want". Took the business elsewhere, wont be back. After reading the reviews I can see the customer service here is lacking. I mean people are complaining about delivery times and the owner responds telling them they offer takeout too. LMAO, what kind of response is that? How about improving your delivery time? Or not offering the service at all if you cant handle it. No, let the poor delivery guy deal with all these angry people instead then tell them to come pick it up next time when they complain. Perhaps your takeout service is wonderful, I will never know because of that awful woman who answered my phone call.

WHAT HAPPENED!!!!! The Castle Pub used to be one of my regular stops for great pizza. I moved away to florida and returned yesterday with eager anticipation to return and finally get some real pizza again. Instead I was served the worst pizza I have had in five years! It had hardly any sauce at all, was dry and had no taste. Soooo sad! Like I said this used to be one of my favorite places. I was a regular at least twice a week when I lived in waterbury. The customer service was also poor. When we arrived at 5 pm we were literally the only people in.the main dining room. The owner Pete and his managers were there and while the young lady that served us was.pleasant her waitress skills were much to.be desired. Most disappointing of all was I expressed to her our disappointment in the pizza and not one.manager or even the manager even acknowledged us before we left. If you want great pizza in waterbury this is no longer the place to stop! Soooo sad! We will be headed to Baccos tomorrow.

If I could give a negative-----00 that would be my review for the poor service that I received. The new bartender is rude and extremely unprofessional, she was upset because she did not know how to make a chocolate martini and began to argue with me . I spoke to both owners who did not seem to really care. Im unsure of what her name is but I do know it starts with the letter M she wears the same stretch pants with the word Pink written on them at least 3-4x a week and her husband works there as well. Which I was told is just as rude an unprofessional as his wife. Im disappointed since I am a regular customer there and was treated this way. I had to ask to bring the regular bartender from waitressing to make the drinks then Ms. Same pants began swearing and saying she didnt give a F. K about us n threw her hands up...Just terrible but she still works there so I guess thats acceptable behavior!!:(
